Mitro was a start up, not a "free time" project. Based on the fact it did not stay a startup, one would assume that they could not acquire the needed user base, or sales channel, or whatever other piece of a startup you need to make it a viable endeavor. This is not unusual.
Now that the developers are at twitter their mitro time is indeed all spare/volunteer.
If twitter is developing something similar, due to NDA/secrecy they won't be able to say anyway.
As to the question would you get bored, only you can know that. I'd encourage you to work on mitro.
