I created a shortcut on the Public Desktop
so I wondering if this is a error with the search function and reindexing
I have worked on a HHUUGGEE number of Windows servers and desktop over my career and rarely have the search function not worked. When it did not work it was matter of re-indexing or enabling the service.
The Snipping tool's New button is not working for new screenshots. However, it works for new recording. I am on the Windows 11 insider preview, build 25905. It has happened before and I was able to fix it by changing some files associated with the app but could not fix it this time. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas that can help me fix it? thanks in advance
Press and hold Windows + Shift + S keys simultaneously until it becomes a dim overlay on your screen and a small toolbar at the top. You can choose one of the four options from the toolbar rectangular, freeform, window snip, or full screen. Now, click and drag your mouse to select the area you want to capture.
Hello Salman!
I wanted to express my gratitude for your valuable contribution. Your input has been incredibly helpful. However, I would like to clarify that the issue I am facing is specific to the 'New' button functionality in the snipping app. This button is only visible when manually opening the snipping app. When accessing the snipping app, various features are available, such as screen snipping, and screen recording. The problem arises when attempting to take a snip using the 'New' button. Unfortunately, the 'New' button is unresponsive on my system, rendering it impossible to capture screen with the 'New' button. Although I am aware of the shortcut method, my concern lies solely with the malfunctioning 'New' button when using the snipping tool.
Thank you once again for your assistance!
The "sfc /scannow" is indeed a useful utility that can scan and repair system files in case of corruption.
Thank you again for your feedback, it is a pleasure to assist you.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need any further support.
I have seen this happen on several computers and I have never, ever, been able to fix this. No amount of fixing folder permissions, resetting Windows apps through Powershell, uninstalling, reinstalling, has done anything to even remotely fix this. When I encountered this issue, other Windows apps were also broken, like the calculator, and the photos app. I tried to fix the issue on 3 or 4 different computers, at different times, over the course of a few years.
The only time I did fix it was when I caused the issue when I disabled the Windows firewall through the registry. I know what some of you are thinking, the firewall has nothing to do with the Windows apps, and I agree with you. It's a long story why I had to disable the firewall through the registry but in the chance that the OP disabled the firewall through the registry, re-enabling it will also re-enable the Windows apps.
Thanks Robert, I'll take a look but I wouldn't expect to see any setting changes that could account for this. It's worth checking of course. I'm assuming the setting "do not allow snipping tool to run" will/should be set to "not configured". As has been suggested, this is most likely a bug.
What disappoints is the amount of time wasted trying to understand what went wrong only to end up not learning anything. Usually, all I can do is just get rid of the problem by re-installing Windows or a backup image after which I'm pretty certain I'll never see the same issue again. That's the nature of bugs I guess.
Strange that you should mention that. I had a problem a few weeks ago whereby suddenly I was no longer able to burn DVDs (but could burn CDs OK). I thought initially that this was a sudden drive failure but think now it had been caused by a Windows (10) update. I bought a new DVD writer drive but that did not work either.
Interesting story. I haven't seen this Snipping Tool issue before and can think of nothing not even a recent Windows update that might have triggered it. I certainly made no changes to Firewall. I've seen fiddly issues like this come and go many times and usually I never learn the cause. The only thing I've discovered so far is if I right click on the Reset button in the App settings, Snipping Tool will work once and then stop again. As you say, hopefully, it will disappear with a future update.
One day, I might post the long story of the mystery Dell server at my workplace that suddenly refused to boot in the server rack it was in. It booted just fine anywhere else - like in another room for example. It simply hung up during POST. There was nothing, I repeat NOTHING, that I, my technician and the Dell support engineer who came to look at didn't try, no component we didn't substitute or swap out to try to isolate the problem. We were at it till late into the night all without success. It was supernatural.
A big thanks to everybody who helped with this. Sadly, nothing I tried worked so I bit the bullet and did a fresh install of Windows. Snipping Tool is working fine again and I'm testing it each time I make changes or re-install app in case it goes belly up again. A lot of effort for such a trivial issue I realise. It's looking like it was just a random corrupted file or bug.
Are you doing images of your main system disk, say with Macrium? It's much, much easier to do a restore clone and as a matter of fact, I have backup, bootable SSD and HDDs ready to slot back in should the occasion ever arise.
Usually, I just do a restore when there's a problem I can't fix or don't have the patience to try. In this case, I restored an earlier backup image but the problem was still there so thought I'd try to dig into it instead of taking the easy way out. Unfortunately, all my efforts came to nought.
