I have always used the IP Camera's manufacturer's tool to discover their brand of IP Cam. Since we use a few different manufacturers of camera, it would be great to have a generic tool to discover IP Cameras. This would save lots of time for our onsite techs. Are you aware of such a tool? if so, could you point me in the right direction?

One thing to keep in mind with tools like Angry IP Scanner or Advanced IP Scanner (and like discovery tools), these tools will not include the management features available from the manufacturers tool(s). Such as reassigning the IP, updating firmware, gathering logs, etc.

If you are dealing with new or modern cameras, you can get a lot of mileage out of ONVIF device manager. It automatically finds all ONVIF cameras on the segment. It will also provide a live stream for focusing and positioning. You can also change ONVIF settings, including IP. It's free as discussed here.

Many network devices that need to be discovered on the network use the so called 'Bonjour' protocol. Bonjour locates devices such as camera, printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. Most cameras will respond to this multicast.

Network discovery tools from different vendors use this technique to discover specific brands of devices (cameras). They build their vendor specific applications on top of this, and only cameras of that specific brand are presented.

In the IE toolbar, you should see the Bonjour icon (a swirling icon), and if you click on it, on the left will open a toolbar, listing ALL the cameras, printers and services found on the network. Clicking on the device will open the web interface of the device in the IE window. This allows you to access the device web interface, without even knowing it's current IP address. See below:

Note that most devices are DCHP per default, so provided there is a DHCP server on the network, you can directly access the device by clicking on its name in the Bonjour toolbar. In the network configuration, you can then give it a fixed IP address if desired.

Follow this IP camera initial setup guide / network setup if you are using your Viewtron IP camera without a Viewtron NVR with built-in PoE (Power over Ethernet). This includes Viewtron AI cameras. For clarification, when you connect a Viewtron IP camera to the PoE port on a Viewtron NVR, much of the initial network setup described in this article is not required because the NVR assigns and manages the IP addresses for you. To be clear, these instruction are applicable for the following installation types.

The Viewtron IP locator tool is only available for Windows at this time. If you do not have a Windows PC on the same network as your IP camera, please use one of the other methods to locate your IP camera on your LAN.

3) On the "Add Device" screen, tap in the down arrow to reveal and tap on the "Local Scan for Device" option. It may take 15-30 seconds for the network search to finish and the app does not do a good job of letting you know that it is working, so please be patient and wait at least 30 seconds. When the network scan is complete, all of the IP cameras detected on the network will be displayed. You can see in the above right screenshot that one IP-B8 camera was found on IP address 192.168.0.131.

If you tap on the camera, the IP address will be added to the IP field in the app.

4) The IP address:port will be automatically filled in for you. Enter a Name for your IP camera, User ID, and Password. Then, tap the preview button to test the network connection. The default User ID for Viewtron IP cameras is "admin". The default password is "123456".

You can see above that the IP Installer tool found one Viewtron IP camera, model IP-D8 on the network. If you double click on the device, a web browser will open. Please note that only Internet Explorer is supported at this time for live video display. However, Chrome and Safari web browsers can be used to manage all of the settings of your IP camera (just no video display is supported)

The above network setup / installation instructions are also applicable when you are using a Viewtron DVR or NVR and connecting your IP camera to a local network (not directly to the PoE ports on a Viewtron NVR).

Learn more about the latest Viewtron NVRs for IP cameras with built-in PoE here. Please note that Viewtron AI security camera software in only integrated with Viewtron NVRs. Viewtron hybrid DVRs work with Viewtron IP cameras but the AI software is not yets integrated.

Configuration tools are important when it comes to setting up, owning and managing a security camera system. These tools are especially useful when it comes to configuring IP security camera systems. This includes configuring recorders such as NVRs, DVRs, and XVRs for a network to set up remote viewing. In the article below we show how to install and use the Config Tool for various useful functions. There are more things you can do with the Config Tool but they are advanced and usually unnecessary. We even use the software on a day to day basis to test and prepare equipment for our customers.

The first step to use the Config Tool software after installing it is searching the local network. The software can scan a network for devices sold by CCTV Camera World. If the network is a non-standard 192.168.1.xxx network then the search setting option can be used to scan other networks. Watch the video below to learn more about using the Config Tool to scan a network.

Rarely an IP camera might be sent with factory default settings by our technicians and need to be initialized. Or our support team may suggest a factory reset to fix a setting or after applying new firmware. Either way any cameras that are in default mode need to be initialized before they can be used. In the video below we show how to initialize a camera using the Config Tool software. Previously a customer would have to login to their camera manually, this software makes it very easy to initialize a camera or many cameras at the same time.

It automatically stores every scan you capture on Adobe Document Cloud. And it easily integrates with Adobe Reader, which makes it a breeze to turn a piece of paper into a PDF that you can open on any device and share, sign, and comment on with others. It can also save scans as JPEG image files.

An optional Adobe Scan Premium subscription (at $10 per month) offers extra storage, saving as Word or PowerPoint files, and password protection. But the free version is likely enough for most people.

As an added bonus, scans have searchable text you can copy and edit. And if you have multiple pages to scan at once, instead of single images in your camera roll, you can have multi-page PDFs organized in their appropriate folders in a cloud-storage service like Adobe Cloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud.
