Evening, 39 Winter or 9th Day of the Dragon Moon

With the weather improved, communications completed, bones cast and spirits talked to, the party was finally ready to get a move on. Once the weather cleared and Ragnar gave the word, Alfvine quickly assembled a crew and got the dragonship into the water.

The ship was called the Skyserpent, it was smaller than the ships the party had been on so far but otherwise of the same basic Wodinfolk design. With the whole party and a small crew on board, things were a bit more cramped. Ragnar will presumably take a turn at the oars, if any of the others want to take a turn the Wodinfolk sailors will appreciate it. Overall though, the winds are favorable.

That's about it in terms of good news, the bad news is that the temperatures are below freezing and the icy cold water frequently splashes into the boat. Darc is loving it, if he liked to swim he'd probably jump in. Thariania doesn't seem overly concerned and a few of the party members have heavy boat cloaks. Ragnar and the other Wodinfolk enjoy discomfort for the most part. For those not fitting into the above categories, it's very cold and wrapping in blankets only helps so much as they quickly get wet. It's overall not an enjoyable trip for most of the group and very little sleeping gets done.

Afternoon, 40 Winter tonight is the 10th night of the Dragon moon (Full moon)

The next afternoon, the ship begins to pull in towards the land and the small ship beaches itself in the soft sand of a landing area. Other boats are present but have been pulled from the water similar to the other ships in Ebersfjord. A dozen Wodinfolk warriors approach quickly and stand nearby, they are armed and alert.

One of them steps forward, looks over the ship, the crew and the passengers, "What business does Earl Ivar have here in the realm of Earl Cynewulf. Do you wish to sell us these slaves?" The warrior indicates the party.

"My lord has no shortage of slaves at the moment, the year has been prosperous"

Ragnar steps forward and nods at the warrior.  As he does so, he parts his cloak to expose his necklace of ferocious dragon and apep fangs and claws, "The Allfather's smiled on us, too, good warrior.  But, no, these ain't slaves for sale.  They're more like ... heralds of new adventure, messengers of greater glory!  In any case, they're my friends and guests of my father Earl Ivar Eberhardsson."

"For I am Ragnar Ivarsson Dragonslayer.  We bring news and songs of adventure, tales of combat with Nidhoggling, Helspawn and other monsters of darkness, and we bring word of strange things prowlin' in Wodinland as well as Alandoria, great evil things that our seers tell us have caught the attention of the Allfather himself."

"We come as guests seekin' the hospitality of his lordship Earl Cynewulf to share these tales and songs of today - and perhaps discuss what these events might mean to the Wodinfolk and what opportunities for glory and gain they might offer to the true warrior sons of the Allfather."

The warrior seems to be sizing up Ragnar, the rest of the crew and the party. He looks back at his men and pointing at one of them indicates up a large hill. The man leaves formation and takes off at a jog towards the large hill.

At the top of the hill sits a hall, similar in size to Lord Ivar's but the height of the hill in the middle of town makes the hall seem larger than it is.

The warrior turns back to the group, he's an older warrior, well scarred but still obviously in good physical condition, "I am Beewulf, uncle of Earl Cynewulf. I'm sure the Earl has enough hospitality to spare for your...friends. In any case, Ragnar, son of Ivar. You and your crew will be made welcome in the Wulfshall."

A few of the warriors help Alfvine and the crew pull the boat safely out of the water, then the group walks together up the hill to the hall. The inside is similar to Ivar's hall as well, apparently architecture is fairly standard around here. The party is led into the large, open room with benches and tables filling up most of the space and several large fires going near the middle of the room. Slaves are quickly starting to get food going, apparently in preparation for a rather short notice feast.

Beewulf turns to Ragnar and Alfvine, "The Earl will surely wish to greet you and offer you his hospitality. In the mean time, enjoy drink and the warmth of the fires."

He snaps his fingers and a pair of slaves bring out horns and mead for everyone in the group. They puzzle over Thariania for a moment but in the end give her mead anyway.

A few more minutes pass before Earl Cynewulf enters the room and takes a seat at the raised platform at the head of the room. He looks over the group as the group gets a look at him. Like most Wodinfolk, he is large, well built and battle worn. Although he's perhaps not quite so muscular looking as Ivar. Though as he searches the party his eyes have a sort of deadly cunning that leaves one concerned about his intentions.

"I am Earl Cynewulf, son of Cynewulf, my grandfather also was Cynewulf. I welcome you to the Wulfshall Ragnar, son of Ivar. And to your crew and servants I also bid welcome. We'd like to have a feast in your honor this evening, if you'll be staying that long. It'll give us a chance to discuss what business brings you out this way. Until then, you are welcome to the town or the hall, anything we can do to make your stay a good one, please inform us."

Cynewulf excuses himself on business. Beewulf tells the party the feast will begin in about 3-4 hours if anyone wants to rest, bathe, shop or explore for that time. They'll make slaves available to assist with any of the above if needed."

Most Wodinfolk towns are pretty similar. Almost all mundane or skilled jobs are manned by slaves unless they are involved with security or something similar.

Likewise, in most towns the slaves are fairly well treated. Mithras treats their slaves like whipping posts. The Wodinfolk treat their slaves more like surfs or peasants. They just don't pay them.

There will probably be a slave in one of the shops that can works bows/arrows/etc. Although you are much more likely to find blacksmiths as they tend to make the weapons the Wodinfolk care about.

Does Ivy want to go shopping?

Grim will follow the others until he has been seen by enough people, like guards and servants around the longhouse, so that he will not be mistaken for a complete stranger when he returns. He introduces himself to one or two so they will remember him. Then he excuses himself and heads for the woods.

Grim wants a head start on getting to now the surroundings. He might have been here before, but if so it was many years ago, and he doesn't remember much. He will be gone most of the night since it will take him hours to get to know a place. He will of course have an extra eye out for places of power, wild life threats and monster tracks. He will move quickly while there is still daylight, then he will move as fast as the terrain and light conditions allow. He won't come back until he feels he is part of the land around here too.

The townsfolk look like professional killers, always looking for their next prey. Kind of like Ragnar and all his kin.

With that said, for trained killers Wodinfolk seem to be relatively fun and friendly when they aren't trying to kill you. The camaraderie of the Wodinfolk reminds Ivy of Kree's army of ruthless Dwarf killers -- if you ignore the fact that Kree's army are ruthless killers who target based on race and take no prisoners, they are otherwise fun people.

The warriors on patrol near the woods give Grim a suspicious look, "Why would you want to go into the woods at night? There might be frost giants."

They look him over, noting his distinctive lack of Wodinfolk style weapons and one of them spits on the ground at his feet, "He's some sort of weakling or coward, maybe best he gets crushed by frost giants as opposed to contaminating the feasting hall with cowardice. I say we let him go."

The other shrugs and they let Grim go off in the woods like some crazy witch woman.

"May the Allfathir walk with us all, I feel a blood moon coming on and old evils are stirring. Keep your weapons ready and close, less you end up out side Valhalla without a death worthy of song." Then Grim prowls off into the woods, looking for trouble.

Ivy has no problem finding blacksmiths. There are two in town, one who specializes in weapons and armor and one who specializes in everything else. Both are slaves running the shops for their Wodinfolk masters.

There is a slave who makes bows, primarily for Wodinfolk who want to go hunting. He gets his arrowheads from blacksmith slave 2, he says the blacksmith can make them from any metal available, he normally makes them to order and doesn't keep a supply on hand since the demand is low and metal sitting around is worthless.Ivy gets the impression the blacksmith could forge them quickly as he has molds ready and ore on hand.

Ivy gets a lot of strange looks around town. The slaves are confused as they've never seen a non-Wodinfolk walking around who wasn't a slave. He is questioned once or twice by Wodinfolk, but when they hear he came with the ship that arrived and is with Ragnar Ivarson, he's allowed to go about his business.

For those waiting in the hall, things are very busy. A continuous parade of slaves are running about, mostly cooking, delivering cups and plates, etc.

Annadin and Calima are probably working on some finishing touches for their song when a pair of decidedly feminine arms wrap around Annadin from behind in a hugging fashion.

"Uncle Annadin!" Says an excited voice. The culprit is an elf girl in probably her late teens who looks remarkably like a young version of one of Annadin's sisters.

ooc:  Just a clarification, so we're on the same page about Annadin's family.  The two women relatives whom he knows were kidnapped by Wodinfolk (and believed sold to the Mithrans for minework) were his cousins, daughters of his mother's sister.

There seem to be three possibilities:

1. This could be a third kidnapped relative whose loss Annadin was unaware of, i.e., a daughter of one of Annadin's older siblings (he does indeed have considerably older siblings).  The party has only met his younger sister Ianith who is 10, so "looks remarkably like a young version of one of Annadin's sisters" seems oddly put.  More likely would be "looks remarkably like a slightly older version of Annadin's younger sister Ianith."

2. You may have intended this to be one of the original two kidnap victims and simply remembered them as Annadin's nieces, rather than his cousins, in which case a correction is probably needed.

3. This may, in fact, be one of the original two kidnapped cousins, and it may be normal in Free State Elvish culture for younger cousins to call older cousins of the same generation "uncle."  There is about a decade difference in age.

The nice women's daggers are fine Daggers with a +1 or more damage and made of silver. They run anywhere from $1000 and up depending on the jewel work and level of fine. Most Wodinfolk women have one of these as a status symbol + weapon in one.

You can get regular, silver or fine items for about the same prices as back home.

Sirius and Figol can go search for a Wizard's kit if they wish. Ragnar and Annadin's cousin Merilneth both told them there won't be one in the markets and if there is one in the village at all it would be in Earl Cynewulf's possession waiting for spring to be sold in Alandoria somewhere. They had both recommended asking the Earl about it.

One could cast a Find spell as Figol suggested, although Annadin had reservations on this approach due to the limit placed on Wodin's Bracelet and just how broadly "Against the Wodinfolk" might be interpreted. So I was waiting on word of whether Sirius/Figol decided to try this route before doing it.

Sirius suggests to the others, like him, who do not have the boatmen coats, that the party buy one for every member of the party.

Hearing that Calima cannot get a quarterstaff for weeks, Sirius talks with Calima.  "Calima.  As you can see, I carry a quarterstaff.  Once, in a far off land, I was able to use it proficiently, and I am slowly studying to learn its use again.  But, in the meantime it is non-magical and you may burrow it.  I was only carrying it to blend in."

Sirius will lend Calima his quarterstaff.  Sirius is once again using his cane, so as not to be empty handed (gm reminder, his cane is specially designed to hold his wand-staff of power and has a 3 magic and 2 visibility conceals upon it).  It is unlikely that anyone in the party even knows the wand is there, but he has warned people not to touch his cane, just in case.  He is wearing his all black attire, and not his grey apprentice robe.

Good Fortune,
Richard / Sirius

The Wodinfolk don't have a lot of boat coats as are common in the south, although they have a decent selection of fur and leather based items which can provide good coverage and warmth. It's mostly a women's fashion, although you sometimes see older warriors wearing fur mantles and the like.

Sirius will remind Ragnar that we are seeking a wizard's chest, and to inquire about one when it is convenient.  It is unlikely that we will be able to barter one without Ragnar's help.

A fur mantle would be sufficient or Sirius.

I already show Sirius with a Cloak and a Wolf Fur Cloak -- he can buy another one easily enough though.

Predatory animal furs like wolf/bear are most expensive, other animal furs are available though. Ragnar says men stick with predatory animals.

They have some all white ones they say are bear, Sirius has never seen a white bear and wonders if they are serious or tricking him.

IVY:  ( before heading  out  to look for blades and such )  he approacjes Sirius and Figol  and asks,"..the thing that  dampens magic in this land? Does  it come from the land itself? If it does, would  we be able to...say...make arrowheads from the stone  around here, and if  we would wound  one of the dragon riders..would that cause them to lose, or be weakened In magic?"
He will wait for the answer, then goes about   looking  over the blades and such.

The wolf coat is fine.  I didn't write it down.

Ragnar nods at Sirius, "Yeah, I know.  The handwavin' kit for Violet was already on my mind even before Figol said anythin' 'bout it today. Only reason I didn't ask Earl Cynewulf 'bout one when he greeted us a bit ago is ... well ... my gut just told me the timin' woulda been off.  Guests don't ask 'bout somethin' that 'spensive the second they arrive - even if they plan to pay coin for it.  Anyway I want to ask the earl when I know he's in a good mood, maybe fun-drunk, and anyway no longer so puzzled 'bout who you all are and why we're here."

Figol gives a smirk. "Sometimes things don't come easy. Let's wait for a moment to ask the Earl. We can try a Find later, if we need to. Is there anything else we can shop for that we need?"

Calima acknowledges Sirius’ kind offer to use his quarterstaff.  With a nod and a smile, she responds to him in a low voice, “I appreciate the loan of your quarterstaff.  It will be safe in my care.”

She carries Thariania’s bow and arrows, and then adds Sirius’ quarterstaff to her load. She casually mentions to any slave acquaintances that look at her oddly that she is carrying weapons for her mistress.

Gently smoothing her hand across the surface of the weapons, Calima closes her eyes and thanks the gods for her good fortune.
