Cynewulf listens as the slates are read, "If the Sly One wishes to reward me for freeing a slave he can do it in advance or make me a promise himself. Speculation isn't payment though."

The Earl looks to his wife then back to the group, "I'll have my wife do rituals, if the Alfather wants something of me, perhaps he'll pass it along. We'll speak again tomorrow."

Cynewulf stands and takes his wife's hand to lead her away. As they walk he flags down a slave and whispers. Annadin easily over hears an order to send Merilneth to his and his wife's chambers.

Annadin nods at the earl's first question and gives a tilted nod to the second. He writes for Ekie to read aloud:

"I suspect he'd indeed compensate Your Lordship, but I can't be sure."

> "Not being disrespectful to the gods, but if Wodin wishes to give you a gift I'm unclear why I'm supposed to give it to you."

Annadin responds with a slate that reads:

"Whether a Wodinson must always heed the Allfather's will, I don't know."

Annadin continues:

"Quite possibly the Allfather approves of Your Lordship's point of view"

Annadin continues:

"and intends Your Lordship be compensated promptly in this transaction."

Annadin continues:

"If so, I'd hope for prompt opportunity to render you some valuable service."

Annadin continues:

"Or maybe Runa's value to Ebersfjord will bring Ragnar to make you an offer."

Annadin continues:

"On the other hand, it's also possible that the Allfather expects a Wodinson"

Annadin continues:

"to honor the debt of a rescued Wodinsdottir as a sister, regardless of clan."

Annadin continues:

"If so, then Your Lordship's reluctance may displease the Ancient One,"

Annadin continues:

"and any blessing he might have given Your Lordship for freeing my cousin"

Annadin continues:

"would pass instead to that Wodinson who buys Merilneth to free her."

During the entertainment phase, Annadin will accompany Calima in performing a number of songs, both some traditional Wodinfolk favorite drinking and battle songs that Calima has taught Annadin and a couple ballads that Annadin has written about the company's adventures (summarized below the asterisks).

Calima and Annadin also perform a highly speculative piece they've prepared about the future exploits of the Wodinfolk clans that will join the fight against the Nidhoggkissers - lots of ferocious dragons, ominous apeps, shadow creatures and living flames, evil people in black, ugly gargoyles, and bizarre demons to be vanquished and slain; heaps and heaps of gold, silver, gems and coin to be won and magic items to be looted and turned into gold and ships; glorious reputations earned, warrior careers launched, and blessed deaths of warriors bound for Valhalla.

******

THE BALLAD OF THE DRAGON OF THE WESTFALL
CONTENT OF CHORUS:
Reference to the good Countess Aylia of Minot as the company's generous patron
Reference to the composition of the Company proper sent from Minot, i.e. 3 elves, a hobbit, a drakyr, 5 humans, including a Wodinmann & two mages

CONTENT OF VERSES:
Verse 1 - description of dragon attacks in the Westfall and Custiwald
Verse 2 - Company in Custiwald: assistance from Count Lendres and the mage temple, followed by horrible explosion & fire at temple, benign intervention by a water giant - makes good sub-plot (definitely no mention of giant's creator, though)
Verse 3 - Company's first sighting of dragon on horizon, followed by Ekie's astonishing hawk encounter
Verse 4 - Canigli: Goblin WS puts Company in touch w White Sword guild, WS fighters & mage apprentices join, followed by description of dragon attack on city
Verses 5 - 8 - Description of battle w dragon, featuring among other things
-- Dragon's recognition of Ekie via her dragon scout, trance danger & Sirius' intervention
-- The Mage Temple chosen as battlefield & the dragon's ring of fire around Company
-- brief convo w dragon, White Sword line in front while Annadin charges forward to detonate gem vs. dragon's right shoulder, blast rips large wound
-- dragon curses & charges, attempting unsuccessfully to trample Annadin while covering White Sword mercs in flames, one falls; Ragnar charges and plunges pikeaxe deep into dragon's left shoulder, eliciting a scream and a slash of her sharp poison-tipped claws slicing through Ragnar's armor
-- just then, Vesser & Kevlon unleash two exploding-gem arrows at serpent's upper neck & wing, respectively; two huge blasts rip two more wounds & the dragon falls along w 2 of our men from the concussion as Lady Ekie's small dragon flies over the enemy, Sirius' giant appears & Figol rains magic water upon the burning White Sword mercs, quenching the flames
-- badly wounded, the dragon stands & curses company some more, refusing to surrender; as the giant & Vesser charge & Ragnar swings away, Ivy unleashes a third exploding gem-arrow into the dragon, killing her

THE BALLAD OF THE BATTLE OF DEMON ISLE
Verses 1-2 - introduction of Ivar, Violet and the party on Wodinship
Verse 3 - Kraken attack, warriors grabbed, but foiled by Violet summoning a giant shark, ripping it to shreds
Verse 4 - first imp appearance on shipboard, vanishing, laughter; Ragnar alerts Ivar, who taps Hogni, Arnulf, Wolfram and Gudrodar to help catch imp
Verse 5 - party and above-named all kidnapped by imps to southern desert island
Verse 6 - chanting imps found by swimming Vesser, party charges them just as Greater Demon summoned
Verse 7 - description of horrid Greater Demon
Verse 8 - Ivar takes command, intersperses warriors, directs archers to focus fire
Verses 9 - 18 describes battle citing highlights, such as:
     - Ragnar skewering first imp, that vanishes briefly rather than face arriving Ivar and Vesser, too
     - Annadin vanishing and attacking second imp from behind as it attacks Hogni
     - Hogni's courage facing Greater Demon & second imp, falls before double attack
     - dragon summoned by Ekie, a bear by Figol
     - Sirius's courage in taunting imps as "runts", provoking their triple attack on him
     - invisible Annadin attacks 3rd imp from behind as it attacks Sirius
     - Sirius parries first imp, but he's severely wounded by claws of 2nd and 3rd, falls
     - Vesser & Ragnar's furious double pole weapon charge vs. Greater Demon - both hit, but both have no effect
     - Violet's courage in teleporting away from group, drawing demon & all 3 imps to herself
     - Ivar, Ragnar, Arnulf, Wolfram & Ekie's dragon charge to protect Violet, but too far away
     - Violet's tremendous blast of wrath destroying Greater Demon's form, sending back to Hel
     - imps all attacking Violet, wounding her badly, she falls
     - Vesser shooting arrow in second imp's eye and Ivy & Thariania shoot it w 4 more arrows, it falls & vanishes briefly
     - other 2 imps leave Violet & teleport to attack Ekie & Annadin, who both disappear
     - Ragnar & Arnulf reach fallen Violet to protect her while Ivar, Wolfram & Ekie's dragon turn back to defend rest of party
     - Vesser embeds arrow in 3rd imp's head, Ivy, Kevlon & Thariania deliver 3 more into its body
     - Ekie's dragon flames 3rd imp to no avail, claws 1st imp's back more deeply
     - Hogni & Sirius, both badly wounded earlier, seriously injure 1st & 3rd imps, respectively
     - 2 imps attack invisible Ekie, 1st imp misses but 3rd imp slashes her badly, Ekie falls as imp licks blood from claws
     - Vesser, Ivy & Kevlon deliver another 3 arrows into 3rd imp and it bursts into flame & vanishes back to Hel
     - 2nd imp (arrow in its eye) reappears w 1st imp on either side of Ragnar
     - Ragnar leaves 2nd imp to Arnulf & archers, faces 1st imp, injures it seriously
     - Vesser embeds another arrow in 2nd imp's head, while other archers deliver 3 more arrows to its body
     - Arnulf deals terrific blow to 2nd imp which meanwhile gives Ragnar minor wound
     - Vesser embeds a 3rd arrow in 2nd imp's head, it bursts into flames & vanishes back to Hel
     - other archers hit 1st imp w 3 arrows, which then cursing leaves the battle scene for Hel
Verses 19-21 - epilogue of healing, encounter with mermen, Vesser's visiting oracle, Violet building gate to escape island

For most of the group who stay in the main hall, the dinner switches more towards entertainment. There are slaves singing, dancing, acting fools and anything else that gets some cheers and laughs.

Into the early morning the feasting and celebrating continues then families start to break off and return to their homes. A few of the warriors staying in the hall grab slave girls to take with them to bed. The rest of the slaves start to clean the hall, they'll probably be at it all night.

Merilneth finds her way back to the group after having disappeared for a while. She leads the group back to a room similar to where they stayed at Ivar's hall, a large room with a number of beds made of fur piles. She asks if anyone wants anything or if she should find some slave girls or slave men for anyone.

Anyone who wants to request anything feel free. With Ragnar back I'm hoping to move things forward again though. I'll try to advance to tomorrow later today.

Ragnar nods respectfully at Cynewulf, "Yes, Earl Cynewulf, they know how to use the kits and can read lots of special handwaver squiggles. Thank you very much for your generous proposal. I'll let them know."

Looking pleased, Ragnar walks over to Sirius and Figol, "Looks like we have a deal. He has several handwavers' chests but they're incomplete, and the lord earl doesn't have any slaves who can read your handwavers' squiggles to figure out how to make the largest number of kits complete from what's in the others. If you can do that, then the lord earl says you can keep a complete one for yourself in payment. That fat slave with the moneybag - name's Alexander - can take you to where the kits are stored."

Ragnar is, in fact, sitting closest to Cynewulf and has a short trip up to speak with him. Cynewulf listens to the request carefully and calls over a slave, "Get Alexander." The slave nods and trots off quickly

Cynewulf continues, "Your spellcasters know how to use the kits? We captured a few of those and couldn't sell them at our last stop because the kits were incomplete.. So I have one of my reading slaves whose trying to put them back together. But he doesn't know what the squiggles are because they are magetongue he says or something like that."

Alexander, a short, fat man wearing some decent slave clothing appears. He has some writing instruments and carries a coin pouch of probably Cynewulf's money. He leaves the impression of being an accountant which isn't an uncommon thing to have a slave for if you are a great lord.

Cynewulf motions to Alexander, "Alexander will take your spellflinger to the warehouse. If they help him make as many complete kits as is possible they can keep one. This seems fair since they are very valuable items to me once reassembled."

Ragnar looks at Sirius amid the Wodinfolk party chaos, "Whassat? Speak up already! Can't hear a word, you know."

"But I'd reckon you're talkin' 'bout that chest again, right? - I told you, I'm on it. Just other stuff needed to be first. Anythin' else?"

Assuming there isn't, Ragnar gets up again and approaches Earl Cynewulf's table. When he has his host's attention, Ragnar speaks:

"Earl Cynewulf, son of Earl Cynewulf in turn. My friends and I are enjoyin' the feast, drink and song very much. Your hospitality is great even for unexpected guests."

"If it pleases you, my southern friends have got a request. They'd like to know if you might've recently picked up one of those fancy handwavers' chests and not yet had a chance to sell it - I'm talkin' 'bout the sort of chest full of oddities that the handwavers use when they're doin' unfamiliar hocuspocus. They're lookin' for one like that. So if you still have one from your late season campaigns, they'd like to ask what you'd expect for it in exchange."

Ragnar nods respectfully at Earl Cynewulf and awaits his response.

ooc: My sense is that Ragnar is probably already seated much closer to Cynewulf than the rest of the party.

As Ekie stands and speaks, the interest level drops. No one seems to particularly care what she has to say. Then she begins speaking firmly in the old Elvish tongue and moving her hands and fingers in the distinctive style of southern magic and with a sudden final incantation creates the illusion of the Dragon Rider for all to see. A few seconds and another spell later and the Man in Black from outside Custiwald appears as well.

The mood in the room changes quickly. The mood of uncaring celebration and curiosity changes to confusion and chaos. Almost all the married men have their wives whispering in their ears. Small clusters all around the room are talking amongst themselves, the room sounds just as loud as during the party phase, but with much more serious and disjointed discussions. Asgeirr seems amused at the chaos he caused by demanding proof.

After a few moments, Earl Cynewulf stands and bangs his hand on the table in front of him. The room quickly starts to quiet. He looks to Ragnar, "So let us say that, we accept this story that it is by the power of Wodin himself that your elf does magic here. I still do not see how this warrior plaguing the southern lands is a threat to my lands. If he were to come here, we'd fight him like any other enemy. But if he is fighting the southern lands, I don't see how he's any different than us."

Ragnar points at the Dragon Rider illusion, "It was this man, himself, who was in the lands of Ebersfjord. He used his dark magic and nearly killed the powerful wizard lord from the south. He walks freely in our lands if he wishes. He has followers from amongst the slaves. Some of them, since killed by my father, attempted to kidnap one of the women of our village. They wanted to rape her and sacrifice her to their evil god."

He looks around the room, "I say that makes him a threat to all of us!"

This causes a bit more discussion throughout the room. A man calls out, "I say that makes him a threat to Ebersfjord. I've not heard of his mischief here."

This stirs a lot of agreement amongst the room.

The old law speaker sitting near the party strokes his beard in thought. "But the young Ragnar claims this enemy is a threat to us all." The room gets quiet again as people wait to here what the law speaker has to say to the assembly. He continues, "If it is a threat to us all, then the Thing should be called. All the Earls should hear and a decision must be made."

Earl Cynewulf sighs, "I don't agree, I've not yet heard proof of a threat to us all. If Ivar does, why has he not summoned all of us?"

The Lawspeaker points to Ekie and the bracelet, "And what is this token of the Alfather if not a message? When has such a token ever been given before? I've not heard of one. When the gods speak, you should listen, Great Earl"

Cynewulf's wife whispers something to him as he contemplates the words of the Lawspeaker. He looks to Ragnar, "You claim all this story to be true?"

Ragnar stands proudly, "It is as I say."

Cynewulf looks to the Lawspeaker, "And you believe the lawspeakers will support this? The Great Thing has not been called for many years."

The Lawspeaker waves his hand dismissively, "A threat to us all, thing Thing shall be called. It is law"

Cynewulf looks to Ragnar, "Tell Earl Ivar, if he believes this threat to be as real to us as you've said. Then the Lawspeakers say a Thing should be called. If he wishes to summon the Thing, he may give my hold as the place to hold the gathering. I'd insure my allies attend. The Next full moon would be the proposed time. Twenty days from this night."

Cynewulf picks up his mead cup and takes a huge swallow, "Now, I think we have drinking and a party to get back to!" This gets cheers from the crowd which had grown a bit somber and quickly the party is back into swing.

The Lawspeaker seems deep in thought. Merilneth goes about her work. Asgeirr walks by the group with a smile, "You owe me, Ragnar. Lucky for you, I liked your dragon man's claws."

((If anyone wants to do any snooping, partying, etc now is the time. I'm not going to prolong this though since Eric is so busy. Anyone who wants to do any snooping in this town let me know ASAP, if nothing then I'll get everyone back to Ebersfjord and dish out some experience))

Thariania waits until Earl Cynewulf leaves and looks to Annadin, "You know this is a culture of might, strength and perseverance and such right? Just because Wodin showed you the reward you want doesn't mean it's going to fall into your lap."

She sighs, "Freeing so many slaves is going to make it hard for me to feed poor people when we get back"

Thariania heads back to their room and starts counting out her coins left in her coin purse.
