OOC: Hi all, I'd gotten a note that Eric was super busy with end of school year stuff. I've be meaning to just move forward but had been very busy myself. Finally getting some time to write up a little speech for Ragnar to move things forward

IC:
When asked to speak, Ragnar stands tall, strategically leaving his conspicuously sized teeth necklace on display. "I am Ragnar Ivarson, dragonslayer, and I come here on a mission of great importance. A mission so great that the Lord of Battle himself has favored us."

"When I first met these people from the south" Ragnar swoops his mighty arm towards the rest of the party, "I thought of them as enemies. But now, I've found a new enemy. An enemy strong enough to battle armies himself. An enemy who commands dragons as if they were horses. An enemy the Ruler of the Slain wishes us to fight. So I returned to the north, with a great lord of their people, a powerful hand waiver witch woman who destroys Kraken with her mere words. Yet even she was defeated by the rider of the winged beast."

"Earl Ivar, has told me to carry this message instead. He believes this enemy to be an enemy of our people as well, and believes we should fight this enemy for our glory and to protect our people."

The youth Asgeirr who earlier had been arguing with the party stands to get attention, "We're all aware of the greatness of Lord Ivar. But these tales of Ragnar's greatness are new and hard to believe since he travels in the company of sheep. He claims the favor of the Alfather, I'd like to see this favor for myself!"

This gets a number of cheers of agreement from the assembled warriors. Asgeirr looks to the party and gives a wink as if this were a friendly gesture and takes his seat again.

Ragnar nods and points to Ekie, "This elf is of the southern lands. She says their words and uses their magic. Wodin himself, granted these people the power to use their magic here in our lands."

This draws a lot of snarky comments, jeers and challenges to prove this claim. Ragnar speaks loudly, "You wish to see? Then see for yourselves!"

Ragnar nods to Ekie ((Since it has been a while OOC, the plan was to have Ekie as the only female wizard in the group cast some illusions of the Dragon Rider or other such things))

Ekie listened as Ragnar gave his speech, it was a good one and got to the point of why they were there. It was a given that they'd be question and when Ragnar motioned to her, she would look to Sirius for the bracelet. She would them come from the table, to been seen by all easy enough.

"What Ragnar says is true. We've been given the blessings of your AllFather. And with such, I can show you the truth, and show you our enemy." She spoke in a clear calm tone before she would cast the spell for the Illusion. She created the Leader and the Wodinman that was the traitor.

As Ekie stands and speaks, the interest level drops. No one seems to particularly care what she has to say. Then she begins speaking firmly in the old Elvish tongue and moving her hands and fingers in the distinctive style of southern magic and with a sudden final incantation creates the illusion of the Dragon Rider for all to see. A few seconds and another spell later and the Man in Black from outside Custiwald appears as well.

The mood in the room changes quickly. The mood of uncaring celebration and curiosity changes to confusion and chaos. Almost all the married men have their wives whispering in their ears. Small clusters all around the room are talking amongst themselves, the room sounds just as loud as during the party phase, but with much more serious and disjointed discussions. Asgeirr seems amused at the chaos he caused by demanding proof.

After a few moments, Earl Cynewulf stands and bangs his hand on the table in front of him. The room quickly starts to quiet. He looks to Ragnar, "So let us say that, we accept this story that it is by the power of Wodin himself that your elf does magic here. I still do not see how this warrior plaguing the southern lands is a threat to my lands. If he were to come here, we'd fight him like any other enemy. But if he is fighting the southern lands, I don't see how he's any different than us."

Ragnar points at the Dragon Rider illusion, "It was this man, himself, who was in the lands of Ebersfjord. He used his dark magic and nearly killed the powerful wizard lord from the south. He walks freely in our lands if he wishes. He has followers from amongst the slaves. Some of them, since killed by my father, attempted to kidnap one of the women of our village. They wanted to rape her and sacrifice her to their evil god."

He looks around the room, "I say that makes him a threat to all of us!"

This causes a bit more discussion throughout the room. A man calls out, "I say that makes him a threat to Ebersfjord. I've not heard of his mischief here."

This stirs a lot of agreement amongst the room.

The old law speaker sitting near the party strokes his beard in thought. "But the young Ragnar claims this enemy is a threat to us all." The room gets quiet again as people wait to here what the law speaker has to say to the assembly. He continues, "If it is a threat to us all, then the Thing should be called. All the Earls should hear and a decision must be made."

Earl Cynewulf sighs, "I don't agree, I've not yet heard proof of a threat to us all. If Ivar does, why has he not summoned all of us?"

The Lawspeaker points to Ekie and the bracelet, "And what is this token of the Alfather if not a message? When has such a token ever been given before? I've not heard of one. When the gods speak, you should listen, Great Earl"

Cynewulf's wife whispers something to him as he contemplates the words of the Lawspeaker. He looks to Ragnar, "You claim all this story to be true?"

Ragnar stands proudly, "It is as I say."

Cynewulf looks to the Lawspeaker, "And you believe the lawspeakers will support this? The Great Thing has not been called for many years."

The Lawspeaker waves his hand dismissively, "A threat to us all, thing Thing shall be called. It is law"

Cynewulf looks to Ragnar, "Tell Earl Ivar, if he believes this threat to be as real to us as you've said. Then the Lawspeakers say a Thing should be called. If he wishes to summon the Thing, he may give my hold as the place to hold the gathering. I'd insure my allies attend. The Next full moon would be the proposed time. Twenty days from this night."

Cynewulf picks up his mead cup and takes a huge swallow, "Now, I think we have drinking and a party to get back to!" This gets cheers from the crowd which had grown a bit somber and quickly the party is back into swing.

The Lawspeaker seems deep in thought. Merilneth goes about her work. Asgeirr walks by the group with a smile, "You owe me, Ragnar. Lucky for you, I liked your dragon man's claws."

((If anyone wants to do any snooping, partying, etc now is the time. I'm not going to prolong this though since Eric is so busy. Anyone who wants to do any snooping in this town let me know ASAP, if nothing then I'll get everyone back to Ebersfjord and dish out some experience))

ooc: Really sorry for the long absence. Got overwhelmed by school and the rest of real life. Senior year: AP exams, prom, more exams, helping prepare to sell the house I grew up in, high school graduation, university orientation, preparing to move, moving lots of furniture, etc., etc.

IC:

Ragnar looks at Sirius amid the Wodinfolk party chaos, "Whassat? Speak up already! Can't hear a word, you know."

"But I'd reckon you're talkin' 'bout that chest again, right? - I told you, I'm on it. Just other stuff needed to be first. Anythin' else?"

Assuming there isn't, Ragnar gets up again and approaches Earl Cynewulf's table. When he has his host's attention, Ragnar speaks:

"Earl Cynewulf, son of Earl Cynewulf in turn. My friends and I are enjoyin' the feast, drink and song very much. Your hospitality is great even for unexpected guests."

"If it pleases you, my southern friends have got a request. They'd like to know if you might've recently picked up one of those fancy handwavers' chests and not yet had a chance to sell it - I'm talkin' 'bout the sort of chest full of oddities that the handwavers use when they're doin' unfamiliar hocuspocus. They're lookin' for one like that. So if you still have one from your late season campaigns, they'd like to ask what you'd expect for it in exchange."

Ragnar nods respectfully at Earl Cynewulf and awaits his response.

ooc: My sense is that Ragnar is probably already seated much closer to Cynewulf than the rest of the party.

Ragnar is, in fact, sitting closest to Cynewulf and has a short trip up to speak with him. Cynewulf listens to the request carefully and calls over a slave, "Get Alexander." The slave nods and trots off quickly

Cynewulf continues, "Your spellcasters know how to use the kits? We captured a few of those and couldn't sell them at our last stop because the kits were incomplete.. So I have one of my reading slaves whose trying to put them back together. But he doesn't know what the squiggles are because they are magetongue he says or something like that."

Alexander, a short, fat man wearing some decent slave clothing appears. He has some writing instruments and carries a coin pouch of probably Cynewulf's money. He leaves the impression of being an accountant which isn't an uncommon thing to have a slave for if you are a great lord.

Cynewulf motions to Alexander, "Alexander will take your spellflinger to the warehouse. If they help him make as many complete kits as is possible they can keep one. This seems fair since they are very valuable items to me once reassembled."

Ragnar nods respectfully at Cynewulf, "Yes, Earl Cynewulf, they know how to use the kits and can read lots of special handwaver squiggles. Thank you very much for your generous proposal. I'll let them know."

Looking pleased, Ragnar walks over to Sirius and Figol, "Looks like we have a deal. He has several handwavers' chests but they're incomplete, and the lord earl doesn't have any slaves who can read your handwavers' squiggles to figure out how to make the largest number of kits complete from what's in the others. If you can do that, then the lord earl says you can keep a complete one for yourself in payment. That fat slave with the moneybag - name's Alexander - can take you to where the kits are stored."

Alexander walks over to the group a few moments after Ragnar, "Greetings I'm here to take a few of you to the warehouse."

((I know Rick is busy this weekend but Sirius is likely coming. Figol I assume is coming as well)).

After giving Sirius and Figol a few minutes to finish up and get organized, the fat man leads them out of the hall towards another building. A reasonably sized longhouse full of stuff, mostly higher end stuff including some nice weapons and armor in sizes and weights that are a bit small for the Wodinfolk to want to keep for their own use.

Alexander leads them to a small working area where he has apparently been trying to sort the kits. There are a couple of kits mostly assembled but some items are out of order. There are several empty chests and lots of spare ingredients sitting around the work area. The ingredients are mostly grouped, but some with very similar symbols are incorrectly grouped together. An inspection of the partially rebuilt kits shows the same problem. Figol and Sirius assume of they worked through the night and into the next morning they could have most of the chests restored by noon. It's going to be a long night.

For most of the group who stay in the main hall, the dinner switches more towards entertainment. There are slaves singing, dancing, acting fools and anything else that gets some cheers and laughs.

Into the early morning the feasting and celebrating continues then families start to break off and return to their homes. A few of the warriors staying in the hall grab slave girls to take with them to bed. The rest of the slaves start to clean the hall, they'll probably be at it all night.

Merilneth finds her way back to the group after having disappeared for a while. She leads the group back to a room similar to where they stayed at Ivar's hall, a large room with a number of beds made of fur piles. She asks if anyone wants anything or if she should find some slave girls or slave men for anyone.

Anyone who wants to request anything feel free. With Ragnar back I'm hoping to move things forward again though. I'll try to advance to tomorrow later today.

As a show of respect, Figol raises his mug to Cynewulf, then says to Ragnar, "Please tell the Earl we agree to his terms and thanks."

Figol will then follow Alexander.

If the fools  are more 'slob Humor  he  will pointedly  look for   something else to occupy his time. Ivy is particularly fond of a song with the chorus "Yes we may die but we know it and we can die well" which very much reminds him of fighting on the Dwarf front.

The fools are a combination of jokes, wit and the occasional slapstick piece.

Ivy takes the fur mat closest to the door. He finds the night uneventful.

With the mages talking to Alexander, Ragnar beckons to Annadin, Ekie, Vesser, and Thariania to follow him over to Earl Cynewulf's table.

Ragnar nods to Earl Cynewulf and says, in a voice loud enough for the Lawspeaker to hear but not necessarily the whole hall (ooc: I don't remember how close the Lawspeaker gets to sit to the Earl.):

"Earl Cynewulf, I will pass along to my father Earl Ivar your words about summonin' the Thing - in keepin' with the Law about facin' a threat to us all. I thank you for your willingness to host the Thing and to bring your allies here as well. There's another question havin' to do with the Allfather's words, though."

Pointing to Vesser and Thariania, Ragnar continues: "It was to these two women - to Vesser and Thariania - that the Ancient One appeared when he gave the southerners - like Lady Ekie here - the ability to do their handwavin' here in Wodinland. This appearance happened a couple days ago in the tunnels under the foothills of the northern mountains - right after we slew the two apeps that were comin' to devour Runa the kidnapped Wodinfrau while she was chained to the bloody altar of the Nidhoggkissers. In that battle, the elf Annadin here along with Vesser and me did the most damage to the monsters - and Annadin faced the greatest danger to himself. He bravely charged into the black shadows of one apep and it quickly wrapped itself around him to strangle him. But before it could finish crushing him in its coils, Annadin's short sword bit deeply into the vile wyrm's hide and he slew it and the shadows disappeared - and we could now see Annadin covered in apep's blood, surrounded on all sides by its stinkin' carcass. At that moment it seemed a little less strange to me that the Ancient One had chosen to appear to Annadin the night before and given him the first clues of how to find and rescue Runa."

"So it was right after that battle with the apeps that Vesser and Thariania went down a side tunnel and suddenly met the Allfather. And, like I said, it was then that the southern handwavers were given the ability to do their hocuspocus here behind the Mist, and the Ancient One promised rewards to Annadin, Vesser and me for our courage in the battle to rescue the Wodinfrau and slay the enemies of the Allfather. The rewards promised to Vesser and me won't matter to you, but the Ancient One announced to Vesser and Thariania that Annadin's reward was to be found 'at the hold of Earl Cynewulf.'"

"So, trusting in the words of the Allfather, I am presenting to you, Sir Annadin Findirsson Apepslayer, so we can soon figure out what his reward should be."

IC

With the talk moving through the hall with what she had shown them, she ended the spell and looked around before her eyes came to the Lord. To hear what he was planning she gave a nod. A meeting was needed amongest them all so they can find a way to protect themselves and to fight.

As the party continued on, she moved to the others as they followed Ragnar to the earl's table. She gave a small incline of her head but said nothing unless she was asked anything.

Cynewulf listens to Ragnar and looks to Annadin, then looks back to Ragnar. "How am I supposed to know what reward he is supposed to get? Seems like you should have him ask Wodin if they are on good terms."

Cynewulf's wife chides him gently, "Do not mock the Alfather, my love"

ooc: Annadin attempts to observe whether Cynewulf's court has any aspects in common with southern courts. He doesn't expect Courtly Graces will be especially applicable in this more rustic context but will draw on whatever does seem relevant.

IC:

Annadin raises an eyebrow at Cynewulf's remarks, bows respectfully, and writes on his slate for Ekie to read aloud to the earl:

"The Allfather would scoff at me if I still had to ask him now, Your Lordship."

Annadin continues:

"Perhaps Your Lordship's men report to you more slowly than I've imagined?"

Annadin continues:

"I've found my cousin Merilneth, daughter of my mother's sister, a slave here."

Annadin continues:

"My deeds freed a Wodinsdottir. The Allfather wishes my kinswoman freed."

Annadin nods at the earl's first question and gives a tilted nod to the second. He writes for Ekie to read aloud:

"I suspect he'd indeed compensate Your Lordship, but I can't be sure."

"Not being disrespectful to the gods, but if Wodin wishes to give you a gift I'm unclear why I'm supposed to give it to you."

Annadin responds with a slate that reads:

"Whether a Wodinson must always heed the Allfather's will, I don't know."

Annadin continues:

"Quite possibly the Allfather approves of Your Lordship's point of view"

Annadin continues:

"and intends Your Lordship be compensated promptly in this transaction."

Annadin continues:

"If so, I'd hope for prompt opportunity to render you some valuable service."

Annadin continues:

"Or maybe Runa's value to Ebersfjord will bring Ragnar to make you an offer."

Annadin continues:

"On the other hand, it's also possible that the Allfather expects a Wodinson"

Annadin continues:

"to honor the debt of a rescued Wodinsdottir as a sister, regardless of clan."

Annadin continues:

"If so, then Your Lordship's reluctance may displease the Ancient One,"

Annadin continues:

"and any blessing he might have given Your Lordship for freeing my cousin"

Annadin continues:

"would pass instead to that Wodinson who buys Merilneth to free her."
