Date: 41 - 42 Winter 1913

Barring other business, the party departs aboard ship the afternoon of 41 Winter. Their course takes them deep out to sea before turning back towards Ebersfjord sometime late in the night. The entire day of 42 Winter is spent at sea. The air and sea are frigid which doesn't bother the Wodinfolk too much and Darc is loving it. Most of the party need to have their heavy winter cloaks on. Kevlon, Vesser, Calima and Merilneth don't have one and are freezing. ((I feel like most of the party had bought one, so if Kevlon and Vesser have one and I forgot to put it on my master list, let me know. Figol I show as having two cloaks))

Calima and Merilneth huddle together a bit for warmth, common practice for slaves as the would rarely be given something so nice as a warm cloak.

On the evening of 42 Winter, after most people are asleep (Calima, Kevlon, Vesser and Merilneth are having trouble sleeping in the cold -- there are also about a quarter of the Wodinfolk crew awake to man the sails and steering oar for the shift) Annadin, Grim and a Wodinfolk warrior wake up and look out to sea with a longing look in their eyes. ((PMs incoming)).

Darc also perks up but seems more curious than anything. "Who is that singing?" He asks curiously of the three standing up, none of whom answer him.

Vesser looks at Darc, looks at the Wodinfolk, looks back to Darc...

"Darc, you hear tales around the sea about sirens, that lure people to their death with singing. Is there a chance this is anything like that?"

"Just in case I'm going to stuff my ears with ..." she desperately hunts through her possessions and anything else nearby. Beeswax would be good.

If anyone looks enchanted she'll put her hands over their ears and encourage them to say "la la la I can't hear you."

When it grows  cold and Calima and Merilneth are Huddled together, Ivy  will approached  and  Give them  his  'normal' Cloak,"..use this  as a Blanket over you both, it should help keep you ..less cold and help break the wind a bit." he will spend  his  time watching over the waters nfor ships and such, and  watching the sky  we dragons.

ooc: I doubt that Annadin would fail to note that his young cousin Merilneth was missing a fur coat to wear against the elements for the sea voyage. If permitted to do so by the GM prior to departure, ...

IC:

Annadin would buy a pair of fur coats for Merilneth and Calima. If it is too late for that, then Annadin would help keep Merilneth warm by shielding her with his fur-covered body against the prevailing wind. He nods appreciatively when Ivy offers the slaves a lighter cloak.

On the ship Annadin sleeps between Ekie and Merilneth, the Sleep-enchanted Fleet curled up in his lap, kept warm by both Annadin and the surrounding furs. Annadin's pack, shield, and swords lie next to him.

ooc: Received Grim's action below by PM but it should be posted here:

IC Grim:

Grim rises slowly, not trying to make too much noise that could drown out the voiceshushing the others. "The gods are calling, " he mutters and starts to walk towards the divinesinging with careful steps worried that he will distrupt the visitation. When he reaches the water there will be a trail of dropped gear behind him like two lovers can leave clothesfrom the door to the bedroom.

IC Annadin:

Having awakened at the same time as Grim, Annadin also rises and moves quietly but with evident urgency, leaving Fleet in the pile of fur coat.  He ignores Darc's question. He appears completely enamored, his face lit up with joy. As he moves decisively toward the side of the boat, he shucks anything else that will impede his ability to swim. Unless someone is both awake and quick enough to stop him, the elven minstrel dives into the frigid water.

If there's one thing Vesser is, it's quick...

Vesser will grab whichever of Grim and Annadin she notices first, lightly slap their face,  shout, "Bad magic! That's freeze to death you're walking into," and put her hands over their ears.

I doubt she's able to stop them both,  though.

There are a few seconds of confusion all around until Vesser fumbles around for something for her ears and then jumps up to try and stop Annadin and Grim.

The warrior at the steering oar catches on and yells, "SIREN! SIREN. Wake up, strike the sail, man the oars, catch those men!"

Calima wakes up from the noise, she'd been deeply asleep from the cold. She listens for a moment and says, "What a beauti..." She trails off as she pushes Merilneth away and stands up, "I must see..."

The warriors on the boat are jumping to their feet. A few pull pieces of caulk and shove them into their ears. Others simple man oars. The man at the steering oar leans hard and the boat begins to turn into the wind. Two others strike the sail just in time to prevent it coming flat aback. Men begin manning oars and rowing the boat upwind, hoping to keep the sound away. This also has the effect of making the long end of the boat the path to walkk to head towards the Siren. Calima, Annadin, Grim and the Wodinfolk warrior turn and start looking towards the rear of the ship and walking that way.

Vesser is weaker than Annadin, Calima or Grim and doesn't have much luck restraining them. Merilneth is up now and grabbing at Calima who is closest to her. Two warriors are grabbing at the Wodinfolk warrior trying to hold him in place. They finally hold him still which infuriates him and he starts struggling violently, kicking at them and head butting, "Let me go! I must find the voice!"

Merilneth is having no luck holding back Calima.

Everyone on the boat is now awake. Once the oars are manned the rest of the Wodinfolk turn their attention to the group that's heading towards the water.

The men at the oars begin singing loudly:

"Yes we may die but we die with our teeth at their throats!
Yes we may die but we die with their blood on our swords!
Yes we may die and the reaper is near
And he cuts a great swathe and he claims a great tithe
but he's ours! And we stand by his side with no fear!
And yes we may die but we know it and we can die well!"

The Wodinfolk man has now bloodied the nose of one of his captors and knocked him away, he's forcefully dragging the other with him towards the sea.

Abandoning Grim to the stronger men. Darc sees Annadin heading for the water. This couldn't be allowed, he'd sworn an oath to.protect him and Spike. He goes after him and if he can tackles him to the deck then sits on him. "No you.don't minstrel. Elkie will have my hide if I let you dive into the ocean and die."

Figol rouses with difficulty, his body and mind trying to recuperate from the lack of sleep the night before.  He notices the trance-like state Annadin and Grim are in, and tries to catch up to them.
He shouts, "Everyone, awake! We have to break the spell they're under."  If the bracelet is handy, Figol will try to commandeer it, then cast a Sleep spell on whomever he can catch up to first.  Otherwise he will try to take out the legs of the nearest caught in the Siren's pull, to slow them down.

Vesser fast draws her naginata and makes a non-lethal charge attack against the back of Annadin's head.

OOC: IIRC there's a small but significant chance this could kill Annadin. Sorry about that, running out of options.

If it's practical she'll make it a sweeping attack to hit several people. Annadin is first priority, then Grim, then Calima.

If she has any spare time she'll experiment with different sounds to drown out the siren: scream at the top of her lungs, yodel, sing sea shanties, whatever seems to work. She's willing to burn a few points of FT on this. (OOC: Since I figure fighting and shouting at the same time is tiring.)

Ragnar awakes to the calls of "Siren!" and the boat's aboutface. He leaps to his feet and gauges the dangers.

"Oh, Hel's blast!" Ragnar calls out, "Oarsmen, pull! PULL!"

But, depending upon how the rowing galley is structured, he'll also call:

"But for Thor's sake, oarsmen, trip the fools if you can! Keep pulling the oar but stick out a leg if you can bring 'em down!"

(ooc: I'm assuming that there are just two rows of benches on either side and an aisle in between. If so, it should be pretty simple to slow down the four enchanted when they have to pass a whole bunch of Wodinfolk oarsmen sitting there ready to trip them).

IC:

"The rest of you - knock the fools down! Sit on 'em! Knock 'em out if you have to, but don't hurt 'em real bad."

Ragnar will attempt to stop one of the enchanted by tackling. How he does this and whom he tackles depends on where they are relative to his own position and on the number of Wodinfolk helping the company control the situation. All other factors being equal, however, he would prioritize as follows:

(1) Making sure that Annadin doesn't go overboard. If Darc, Vesser and any others (Ekie?) seem to have Annadin contained, then ...

(2) Stopping his father's warrior from going over, possibly dragging another with him. If other warriors are already covering that, then ...

(3) Checking that Ivy, Merilneth and any others (Thariania?) can contain Calima.  Ragnar gives a quick glance in Thariania's direction and anyone else near Calima. Thariania is in elf child's form, I think, which might make containing Calima hard for her, but Ivy and Merilneth are already two pairs of hands and one grown man. So Ragnar thinks that would be enough. If it's going badly for Ivy and Merilneth, though, and noone else is stepping in, then Ragnar will intervene and help Ivy. Otherwise, if Calima seems likely to be contained, then ...

(4) Ragnar charges off to tackle Grim before he drowns himself. He will not hesitate to punch him in the process; in fact, he might enjoy it.

ooc: I think but don't know that (1) and (3) are already pretty well-covered. So it will probably come down to (2) or (4).

((At present it's a sort of quasi combat time, I'm going to process actions as they arrive. If any of them get close to jumping which is unlikely considering the number of people available to restrain them I'll get a little more strict on turns))

Darc had the earliest notice of anyone and was quite awake by the time it became clear what was going on. The massive multi-hex creature decides to make a go at Annadin and getting a running start slams his massive body into Annadin from behind. The totally oblivious elf had no idea it was coming and slams face first into the deck, he's probably going to be pretty bruised up from that but didn't lose any teeth. He then has a several hundred pound dragon man sitting on his back, probably picking at his teeth with his claws disinterestedly.

Annadin seems to be trying to yell something desperate but only gets out some random sounds as he tries to push himself up with occasional stops to try and swat at Darc.

Vesser, being quite fast was ready to charge Annadin (And still can if she just wants to wack him in the head although she may prefer swapping targets?)

Figol grabs the bracelet from Sirius and slides it on his  wrist. He feels in touch with his magic again. He can start casting sleep spells and the ship is small enough most anyone is in effective range. He's at dex negatives for casting on the rocking deck without sailor talents

Ivy and Merilneth go for Calima. Coming from behind at a run is a sure fire way to engage someone in hand to hand and Ivy knocks Calima to the deck. Ivy does not have much of a size or strength advantage on Calima who quickly begins struggling, "LET ME GO! LET ME GO!"

Merilneth jumps on her as well, and speaks calming words which are ignored by Calima who is trying to force herself free of her double pair trying to hold her down.

Ragnar and two other warriors join the fight with the crazed Wodinfolk warrior. This degenerates into a fist fight and ground grapple pile. It's slow going restraining the strong warrior, but they will likely succeed.

Grim, seemingly ignored by most everyone takes another couple of steps towards the end of the boat. (Although I assume he'll probably make the list for Vesser and Figol) He will have to get past a few of the rowers, but they are all rowing as fast as they can as if everyone's lives depend on it. They aren't likely to do much other than attempt trips sporadically until the ship is further away from the Siren.

Despite having two people on her, Calima looks like she may slip free. Annadin is struggling but Darc is so extremely large and heavy he's probably more likely to suffocate than escape if he keeps struggling (which he does). The Wodinfolk are in a big pile with four of them trying to restrain their comrade, it's probably under control.

OOC- I'm sorry everyone for not replying before now, been a little busy lately and mail has been out of sync for some reason.

IC-

When the commotion started, Ekie had been fast asleep, helped by the warmth of the cloak and having Annadin beside her. She now sat up, looking around quickly, taking in what was happening. She rose quickly to her feet. Taking in the scene was helpful and she did wince seeing Darc take down Annadin like that and sit on him. Any other time, it might have made her snicker a little. The Wodin warrior was somewhat taken care of as the elven girl..But Grim..

She saw Figol with the bracelet but to help him more, she rushed at Grim and tried knocking him off balance by jumping onto his back. Since he was bigger! She twisted her weight around, looking over her shoulder, seeing Ragnar coming. "Knock him out! If the spell doesn't work!" Teamwork right there!

If someone else had handled Annadin then Vesser will indeed switch targets. I think Grim was second.

Hiring people in the head is a last ditch solution because it can kill them. So she'll only use it on someone who seems likely to go in the drink otherwise.

Figol runs up ahead of Grim to give himself a few chances to cast his spell.  He's at negatives for casting on a ship without sailor talent and for partial darkness. He fails on his first attempt and Grim takes another step towards the back of the boat. Figol casts again and Grim collapses onto the deck, sound asleep.

The Wodinfolk pile is struggling but they seem to have their warrior restrained. Calima is writhing furiously, she might get free. Even only on Annadin's legs, Darc is a very large and heavy creature. Annadin is fighting hard but probably won't escape.

((I pre-emptively rolled three more times for Figol and he failed due to his negatives. He can keep trying until he passes out or see if another wizard wants to try any useful spells))

Vesser and Thariania remain ready to incapacitate anyone trying to get off the boat. Between Vesser's high dex and sailor talent and Thariania's archer dex, the odds of anyone making it off the boat are small. The Wodinfolk are rowing as fast as they can to get more distance.

No one knows exactly how long the Siren madness will last.
