Ivar turns his attention to the slaves who are under guard near the center of the room. "Do any of you slaves wish to confess to you and your fellow slaves crimes for the right to beg leniency?"
The regular slaves look like they might be tempted by the offer but a stern look from Caela seems to change their minds.
"Very well" Ivar says with a shrug, "Let's hear what defense you wish to offer."
Caela steps up, "I swear an oath to my gods that what this woman..." She indicates towards Runa, "...says is a complete lie! She was a voluntary sacrifice to our gods because she recognized their power. The rest was an act she put on when these idiots from the mainland stumbled upon the ceremony. Of course we made it look like a kidnapping, she didn't wish people to know this secret. But now she's trying to use it to kill off all the witnesses!"
She points to the other slaves, "These others are witnesses to what I say. And they'll also agree that Runa's 'witnesses' if you wish to call them that are just unwitting fools duped into this cowardly attempt to kill us."
Runa slides the dagger from her belt, but Ivar holds up a hand to stop her before looking back to Caela, "Do you seriously expect me to believe that story? Where is a witness that is not an accomplice? What evidence do you have other than your self-serving testimony?"
"No" Caela responds quickly, "I don't, her scheming was obviously far superior to mine, she set this whole thing up to deceive all of you and have us killed. I say this is true!"
Before Ivar can speak again, Runa says quickly, "I want trial by combat."
Ivar sighs and looks to Runa, "Runa, her story is beyond believable and she has neither credible witnesses or evidence. You have no need to challenge her as you are certain to win. She's probably just baiting you."
Runa looks at Caela, her knife still drawn, "She accused me of lying, do I not have the right to fight her now?"
Hogni leans over to whisper something to Runa who interrupts whatever advice he is giving her by turning to him and saying louder, "Do I not?"
Ivar speaks up again, getting control of the room, "You do have that right, but I believe you should take into account that it is totally unnecessary. At this rate, the only way you'd lose this trial is if you elected combat and were defeated."
Runa says calmly, "Then I want trial by combat, she is calling me a liar and Wodin and Thor help me I will cut her open myself."
Ivar nods solemnly and looks to Caela, "You've been challenged to trial by combat, you may withdraw your accusations against Runa or fight and let the gods be the judge."
Caela smiles seemingly quite happy with the result, "I welcome the chance to prove her a liar."
Ivar looks to his wife who gives him a look of disbelief. He inclines his head towards Caela. Resulting in his wife giving him a "You are going to get an earful about this" look. He inclines his head towards Caela again and Ragnar's mother draws her own dagger and drops it on the floor, then quickly kicks it towards Caela.
Ivar speaks, "The parties have agreed to trial by combat, may the gods show us the truth."
