40 Winter, 10th night of the Dragon Moon (Full moon)
Cynewulf's Hold, Wodinlands

It would not take a perceptive person to realize the time of the feast approaches. The hold was abuzz with slaves cooking, cleaning and setting tables. Warriors and womenfolk from the town began to arrive and mill about, telling boastful stories and drinking some mead to get the evening started off right.

Merilneth is there, she's serving mead. She seems very busy but similarly upbeat to how she was when she surprised Annadin. She comes by several times offering Mead to anyone that wants it.

At one point an old man walks in, he's old...at least by Wodinfolk standards, he's probably in his 60s, but still, don't see many warriors making it into old age. He carries a sword but wears a cloak and walks with a hooked staff. He wears a funny hat. He doesn't look like a scholar, per se, but looks more like one than anyone the party has seen in Wodinland. Alfvine walks up to Ragnar, "I've not seen a lawspeaker in many years"

He or Ragnar explain to the party that Lawspeakers are old warriors that are too old to fight who instead of just going off and dying heroically in a battle like normal men, they choose to go off and memorize all the laws of the Wodinfolk. They're an invaluable resource to leaders so the pay is good, but most wouldn't choose the path. Not very likely to get you a good place at the table in Valhalla.

Soon, the Earl Cynewulf and his family enter the main hall and take seats at the main table. Everyone else starts taking seats around the hall on the various benches up next to the tables. Similar to the last party the group had at Ivar's hold, the older teen girls group up together and seem to be pointing at various warriors and having discussions amongst themselves. One of the girls talking to another points at Ragnar then makes a motion on herself like she's miming a necklace. The girl next to her gets a good look at Ragnar and both return to gossiping with each other about something.

It's not long before most of the people in the room are drunk. Merilneth comes by a few times to serve mead, but spends most of her time near the head table serving family members.

About a half hour into the meal, when people are just starting to get tipsy, a warrior in his mid twenties walks up, pushes another warrior out of the way and takes a seat right across the table from the party, positioned so everyone can hear him except Ragnar who is further up the table and hard of hearing. "You lot are the most heavily armed bunch of sheep I've ever seen around here. I gather you are stoking insurrection?" The warrior has a look of cunning in his eyes as he scans the party, waiting to see who will answer.

About an hour into the event when most everyone in the room is at least partially drunk, Earl Cynewulf bangs the table a few times to get some silence, "I hope everyone is enjoying their meal, especially our guests from Ebersfjord. Ragnar Ivarson, what business brings you to my home this evening?"

There is about a 30 minute gap between the going warrior and Cynewulf talking, so plenty of time. Just making sure the rest of you have someone to chat with.

The warrior stops his searching and looks to Ivy who spoke first, "What matters is a matter of opinion, and sheep people running around with weapons matters to me."

"What is it you want in our lands?"

"Dragons?" The warrior asks with a smirk, "They've not been here in centuries, too scared of us."

"Biggest creature I've seen here recently was down at the beach last spring. I stood there, looking to the sea, picturing all the towns I was going to sack, all the warriors I would slay and all the women I'd bed. When suddenly from the sea came a hydra, big as a ship with a dozen heads. I jumped on the creature and ripped a head off with my bare hands, but two grew back!"

"I drew my sword then since the creature did not fight fair. Fought it for 4 days, before finally I took off its last head. It was exhausting, so when I got home, I only had the stamina to bed my wife for a few hours, but that was enough, and now I have a son and a story."

The warrior takes a big drink of mead. Then looked back to the group, "So what tale do you bring?"

The man turned his attention to Darc, "So you are here to make war? That's fine with me, I like a good war, and the winter is often so dull due to the lack of one. As for sheep, I'm calling your friends sheep. You... I think I actually like. I'm jealous of your long..." He waves his fingers around, "...claws."

As he is speaking Merilneth is walking by with mead again. He wraps an arm around her and pulls the Elvish girl into his lap. She skillfully falls without spilling the mead and lands in his lap without complaint.

"Take this sheep though, note her lack of weapons. She is much more indicative of the type of sheep allowed to come to our lands. Your group though, are armed warriors and not slaves. You also, presumably, intend to leave with the knowledge you gain here. Makes you seem more like a threat to me than anything else. I don't like threats."

He points to Darc, "But luckily for you, I've decided to come over here and see for myself just how much of a threat you are."

Merilneth sat in his lap patiently, holding her large container of mead and seemingly listening carefully.

Vesser: "I'm curious - what name did you give your son? Was it a name that had anything to do with hydras?"

"If you want a fight there's probably several of us would give you one, including me. But we came here as diplomats and it's not diplomatic to kill your host, so it would have to be with blunted weapons."

Darc sneered. "You insult my friends you insult me. What did you call Dame Kira? Oh yeah, elf-slut. I make no ties with one that rapes and tortures. They are scum that deserve no respect and they show no respect for the dead. It is dishonorable to disturb them." His lip curled in disgust at the mention of his claws. "You might change your.mind.about that and the feeling isn't mutual."

Darc scowled at the pointing finger. He would love to bite it off, but he supposed that wasn't very diplomatic. Damn it.

Annadin grimaces at the direction of the conversation, still more at Merilneth's being treated like a doll.  He writes on his slate and has Ekie read aloud:

"We have common enemies w the Allfather, some unknown to you"

Annadin continues:

"The 3 Joetnar we slew defending Ebersfjord, others easily could have,"

Annadin continues:

"but not slave blood cult we exposed, 2 apeps we slew at secret altar"

Annadin continues:

"The Allfather guided us to rescue a Wodinfrau from human sacrifice"

Annadin continues:

"Because the Allfather had appeared to me before, I asked his blessing"

Annadin continues:

"before I charged into the apep's inky darkness & slew the serpent."

Annadin continues:

"After that battle, the Allfather appeared briefly to two others here"

Annadin continues:

"& told them I'd find reward for my courage at Earl Cynewulf's hold."

Annadin writes on his slate and has Ekie read it aloud to the warrior:

"No mere boasts. Apep constricting me when I dealt deathblow"

Annadin continues:

"See its fang.  Apep seriously wounded by Vesser here as well"

As Ekie reads his slate, Annadin holds up a hand for a moment and then pulls from his pouch the long fang of the apep he slew in the tunnels and holds it up before the warrior, turning it to either side for him to see before putting it back in his pouch.  He does not let the warrior handle it at this time.

He writes again on his slate in answer to the warrior's further questions:

"I trust in the wisdom of the Allfather & in that of your lord the Earl"

Annadin continues:

"Perhaps the Allfather will show me a way to be of service here, or"

Annadin continues:

"perhaps the Earl will recognize the Allfather's will without that."

Annadin continues:

"I am Annadin Findirson, Knight of Custiwald, apep-slayer & bard"

Annadin continues:

"With whom am I speaking, scion of Wodin Alfaeder?"

The warrior looks like he's bored waiting for slates to be written and read, "Constricting! Good addition to the story." He says with a nod

When the slates are finished he responds, "I am Asgeirr Sveinson, master of the Ravensclaw, mastered by my father before me. My father was cousin to Earl Cynewulf. Kinship is important, you know."

"I've heard, Annadin Findirson, that this particular slave..." He gives Merilneth a little squeeze, she tries hard not to spill mead at the sudden action and succeeds, "Is your kin."

"Imagine that, stumbling on your own kin up here." He lets Merilneth up, "Back to your duties then, rested long enough. Keep the mead coming, hmm?"

"Yes master" She says with a smile and quick curtsy before running off.

"I hope this was a happy coincidence and a joyous reunion. Because if I find out you have motives to traveling here beyond what you've claimed, well, you may find hospitality here as a guest, but don't suspect it will continue into the future. Traveling in the name of Wodin for your personal goals will not win you any friends."

Darc paused to drink from his mug. "A war keeps you strong, we spar with each other when there isn't one. Males and females fight and hunt together." First part about war was a slight lie. Drakyr were hunters, not warriors despite their fierce looks. Not that they wouldn't fight if attacked. The second part was completely true. Darc snorted. "My compainions are far less like sheep than most mammals I have encountered." He tore off another piece of meat and ate it. He inclined his head at the warrior's compliment, pausing to pick a stuck morsal from between his teeth with a claw. "They do come in handy." He smirked as if enjoying a memory.

Darc watched him pull the girl into his lap, keeping his dislike to himself. Drakyr hated slavers and showed them no mercy, killing them all and allowing no surrender. He glanced at Annadin than looked back to the warrior as he began to speak again.

"With you about and other powerful warriors that are here I doubt we are a threat to your lands." Darc saluted the warrior with his tankard and drained it. He really hoped he wasn't going to mess up, but this bunch seemed much like his kind. Only thing different was Drakyr boasted about memorable hunts rathero then wars.

Darc eyed the pointed finger. Was it bad form to bite it off, probably. Damn it. Darc casually ate some more meat before responding. "That would depend on a few things."

Before he's called upon to talk as he knows he will be, Ragnar makes his way down to where Sirius, Figol and Ekie are sitting and leans in next to them.  He speaks relatively quietly (for Ragnar), but he still needs to be able to hear himself:

"I dunno if you all will think this is a good idea or a bad one.  But I was thinkin' I might - after gettin' the earl's permission, of course - ask one of you to rustle up a fake Nidhoggkisser or two, not for fightin' at all, but for showin' what the real ones look like.  Especially a copy of that crowned Nidhoggrider - he looks worthy of a fight and, since we've seen him up here in Wodinland, I think that'll bug our hosts mightily that this Nidhoggkissin' king just waltzes into Wodinland and has his pawns grab a Wodinfrau to sacrifice.  But there was also that Nidhoggkisser in Black we met outside Custiwald after slayin' the big red Nidhoggling - not the woman so much, but the big man - remember we charged him and I slipped 'cause he's a tricksy handwaver now - well, the man looked and sounded a lot like a turncoat Wodinson - and seein' such a traitor to the Allfather may be another way to get our hosts geared up."

"The other part of this is that your bein' able to do handwavin' stuff here will tend to legitimate the idea that we have the Allfather's blessing - that he's fightin' the same foes and so has hired you all on.  Otherwise, how could your stuff work under the Mist."

"Anyway if you think it's a bad idea, then I won't put you on the spot when I'm talkin' - and if the earl seems real suspicious of us, I won't even suggest you do anythin' at all.  But I didn't want to just assume ..."

Figol quietly responds, "I got a very good, close up look at our 'friend', and could cast a very good illusion of him. However the dragon is a bit large for me to create. I guess I could make a miniature one, but can either of you do a larger illusion?" Figol asks, turning to Ekie and Sirius.

Ragnar nods, "Well, we Wodinsons all know what Nidhoggling look like anyhow - what you call dragons - so there's really not that much reason to show one here just to show it."

"No, I'm thinkin' more of you showin' those Nidhoggkissers in Black - them with their nasty pain sticks - and how they look easier to kill than they are.  So yeah the crowned Nidhoggrider and the turncoat Wodinson - an' maybe that messenger we killed if you want."

"Biggest thing I see any point in makin' - for show, an' always with the earl sayin' it's okay first - would be that big Helspawn that Violet killed on the island.  Because if Violet could wipe out that big Helspawn, but fell before the crowned Nidhoggrider - well, then, it speaks to how tough the bastard must be - and so how glorious to kill him."

ooc:  Oops, lol - there's a word in the middle of this post Ragnar would never use.  "legitimate" has four entire syllables!  It'd be more like this:

IC (corrected sentence):

"The other part of this is that your bein' able to do handwavin' stuff here will maybe back up the idea we've got the Allfather's blessing - that he's fightin' the same foes and so has kinda hired you all on."

OOC:

Figol has illusion, Ekie has 4 hex illusion, Sirius and Grim have 7-hex illusion. Grim is (probably rightfully) avoiding the feast, but that still leaves plenty of magical illusionary power to go around, so depending on what needs to be cast the wizards could pass the bracelet around to conserve strength, etc.

As I recall, for an illusion of a warrior to have exceptionally high stats (like creating a realistic Dragon rider) it depends on those you are using the illusion on having a knowledge of that famous warrior -- so you can create the appearance of the Dragon Rider, but don't let the Wodinfolk (other than Ragnar) try to fight it in an effort to impress them.

(Sorry all, my mail has been wonky lately but I'm all caught up. )

Ekie would be silent through the feast, just eating and drinking with the rest of them. She did look after Annadin, seeing the reaction that took place when the warrior grabbed at his cousin that way. She would look to Ragnar as he came over to her and whispered that among them. "I think that's a good idea. Some people just need visual proof of a treat, to show that the evil can affect any." She said with a nod, looking to Figol and Sirius to see what they'd say, nodding again.

((OOC: I got a note that Eric is very busy, and since much of the talking here is best done by Ragnar that slows us down a bit. So going to throw you guys a few random talkers who may or may not have useful information for you))

A Wodinfolk woman appraoches and puts her arms around Asgeirr, "Come husband, I want your company."

The warrior who had been somewhere between testing and harassing the party smiles, "Of course, my dear, I was just saying hello" He stands and nods to the group, "Well, I at least like some of you. That's a start."

After Asgeiir leaves, the party gets a few more visitors, Merilneth comes by, serves some more mead and smiles, "You'll get used to Asgeirr, he likes getting under people's skin, but he's not that bad."

A few minutes later, the old Lawspeaker comes over and sits at the table with the party, "Your friend the mute elf intrigued me, so I thought perhaps I'd come see you people up close."

With a  Knowing Grin, Ivy holds his  Mug  up towards Asgeir,"..It is nice to see that there a wodin folk, who listen to the Commands of their Ladies  as well, Enjoy your night..."
When the law Giver  approaches  and  Speaks, Ivy gives him a  head bow of respect, but  does not say any thing yet. His eyes  have started to watch the room, as if he were back doing what he did , before the call  to join cme. Watching   those who might be watching them.

Merilneth smiles a bit to Sirius, "I think it's exciting, most of the Wodinfolk love a good story. You should maybe spice it up a bit with stories of all the gold and women that you'll get from the quest. And don't forget the high likelihood of glorious death in the effort."
