43 Winter in the Year of the Magii 1913
For the Elves, New Years will be the new moon on 51 Winter
Today begins the Mithrian Feast of the Mid Winter Sacrifice

With wax in ears, a high level of alertness and a lot of nervousness, the ship passes the next day with no more Sirens trying to lure anyone into the sea. There is a short encounter with a very aggressive and angry octopus, but the crew of the ship and the party quickly dispose of it with minimal damage to one warrior.

The ship reaches the beach and is quickly pulled out of the water and cleaning begins. There have been several deaths in town since the party left, the Wodinfolk on the beach tell them that the Frost Giants have attacked every night, an unusually high level of activity, but nothing the warriors were unable to handle. Though if it keeps up at this rate the rest of winter, things may be rough.

Not long after arrival, one of the witch woman's apprentices arrives. The Wodinfolk men all give her a wide berth as she walks into the group, her eyes quickly settling on Sirius and Figol, "Mistress said you had returned. Your friend is in bad shape, she's still not recovering. She has awoken several times and mumbled things we do not understand. We aren't clear if it's the fever or your southern magic tongue. But she wants one of you there from now on in case it's something important."

As the group gets settled back into town they get various other bits of news.

Arik's wedding to Evja is going to be scheduled for 90 Winter, with the feast and festivities to coincide with the new moon and the last night of the end of year festival. All of which seemed auspicious to them.

The total number of men killed was only 3 in frost giant attacks several more wounded which has been keeping the physickers and magic healers busy. Dozens of frost giants killed though, worst year in a while, but mid winter is usually the peak -- when things are coldest. Hopefully within a few more days, things will calm down.

There was a strange sign in the sky the night of the full moon. The witch women in the woods have been conferring on the meaning but haven't reported a conclusion yet to anyone's knowledge. This seems to have a lot more warriors nervous than the frost giant attacks, which for the most part are the topic of boasting and amusement.

OOC:
I'll put out a separate post about Sirius/Figol visiting Violet hopefully tomorrow. There are several things you'll perhaps learn from some clues here and from talking with Violet if she's successfully cured.

Once the group of five leaves to visit Violet, the remainder of the group heads back into town from the beach. Merilneth and Calima walking in the rear, Calima still looking quite odd for a slave carrying all of Thariania's spare weapons, but since Ragnar doesn't care no one else seems to either.

Ragnar, Darc, Annadin, Kevlon, Grim and Ivy walk in front of them and head back towards the hall. The other Wodinfolk warriors from the ship disperse towards their own home.

A group of wodinfolk women are walking by, seemingly fresh from a workout, looking energized. Runa is with them and she gives them a smile as the group walks by. As they reach the top of the hill where the hall is located, they can see where the funeral pyres have been just out of town down the coast for those who have died the last few nights.

Once back inside the hall, they are quickly greeted by slaves and their bags carried for them back to their room.

Merilneth kneels next to Ragnar, "How may I best be of serice, master? Shall I care for your armor?"

There are no shortage of bragging warriors or paranoid slaves around. The slaves for the most part saw nothing of value. The Wodinfolk do not demand or expect slaves to fight for them or function during battle, so for the most part the slaves stay indoors somewhere safe. All they heard was loud battles, horns, clashing, screaming, etc.

The warriors mostly talk about their individual prowess, not many of them seem to even care about the "Big picture" of the battle and mostly want to talk about how many frost giants they personally were involved in killing.

Through various conversations, Ivy gets the impression that these attacks are not particularly different than normal...they are just a lot more frequent than is normal, especially when the early winter was so mild.

After a while, Thariania skips back into the main house to find the rest of the group. "Violet's not looking great, but sounds like the spell is almost ready. Some of the magic types are going to stay there."

"I'm planning to go out at night and watch the sky for signs. Should be fun, you guys have fun with the frost giants."

She pauses then adds, "And does anyone find it anything more than coincidence that Arik and Evja are getting married the last night of winter?"

Thariania looks to Vesser, "Hi"

She looks back to the group blankly for a moment, "Anyone? Coincidence?"

She shrugs, "Well, it seems strange to me. The last day of Winter there is going to be a major drunken party that we presumably will be invited to if we are still in town. The first day of spring, that's the next day mind you, after the last day of winter, we have a presumed date with his majesty the ruler of the world or whatever. Funny the timing that"

Annadin nods and writes to Thariania:

"I'd had same thought. A few questions to consider:"

Annadin continues:

"How soon after Thing could we leave if Violet recovers?"

Annadin continues:

"Are we stuck here til winter's end due to weather?"

Annadin continues:

"Whose idea was coincidence w wedding? Cult's? Wodin's?"

Annadin continues:

"Closely related q: whom did Arik & Evja consult for date?"

Annadin continues:

"If devious Cultist idea and we warn Ivar, Arik and Evja,"

Annadin continues:

"will Wfolk actually like idea of a wedding night battle?"

Normally I'd pass some of this through Ragnar, but he's pretty busy at the moment. So to a few of Annadin's questions:

-- The Wodinfolk don't sail much in the winter. Note they had to put a ship in the water to take you on the last trip and immediately got it back out. The sea up here is unpleasantly cold and weather can be perilous...not to mention having the warriors away during Frost Giant season isn't a great idea. It CAN be done, but the party will get the distinct impression the Wodinfolk don't want to do it

-- You can't envision a battle the wodinfolk DON'T want to fight, Ragnar can't either

-- If you want to know about date selection, who was consulted, etc. You can go find Arik and ask. He'll be around

Thariania reads through Annadin's slates, "Don't warn them!"

Thariania looks concerned and adds, "If they know we bring trouble they might not invite us."

She considers this for a moment, "On second thought, assure them we are going to bring trouble, that should make sure we are invited."
