Nexus 5X "scan QR code" error

Restarting a Nexus 5X connection thread b/c the old one expired per "inactivity."
I have App Inventor Version 2.36 and whenever I click the "scan QR code" button it says "Scanner: Camera Framework Bug" on a black screen with no more info. This looks to be the easiest way to get apps on the phone but so far no go.
It might be related that whenever I am able to connect - by typing in the six alpha code - many of my converted App Beta/Classic apps do not load images/sprites.
Is there something unique about 5X?

If a base Nexus 5X has a virus checker I am unaware of maybe however I did not load one so it is most likely something else.
