Using just (re) installed latest AI Companion (earlier version seems to have disappeared from my phone!).
Used QR code download.
error 1101 Unable to get response with the URL specified

Something is broken.  It used to work.

It would really help if you provided a screenshot of your relevant blocks, so we can see what you are trying to do, and where the problem may be.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll try to be more clear.
It doesn't matter what blocks I am using - this is a problem with all of my projects.  To simplify:

I just now created a new project with one text box, no control blocks.  "Hello World" minimal project.
I build and choose to get a QR code.  No problems there.
I scan the QR code on an LG Optimus Exceed 2 (Android 4.4.2) with a newly installed AI Companion (latest version on Google Play)
AIC on the phone scans the QR code without complaint (ie: gets the URL)
And then it pops up error 1101 Unable to get response with the URL specified
Clicking "Connect wtth code" pops up the same error.

Since it was working before, I was suspecting that some bug in the new release was broken; if the previous release was available online for testing, I could verify that.

However, I'm now realizing that this is also a different phone than before, so the problem could have something to do with that, rather than the release.
I am now trying an LG Optimus Fuel (Android 4.4), also with latest AI Companion

Same error.      error 1101 Unable to get response with the URL specified
Neither phone is the same as when it was previously working for me (I was previously using a Samsung Galaxy S4).
Both phones are connected via my WiFi (which hasn't changed in a long time) and can browse the web.

I'm glad to help with isolating the problem - figuring out why neither of these phones works, or what the bug in the new release is.  But a screen shot isn't going to tell us anything, because it doesn't matter what project I try - they all fail in this way.

I would try these phones on the old release, if it was available, to help isolate the problem.

Thanks for any help.

Zeph,

It sounds like the companion can't connect to your browser at all.

When the phone get the URL, can you copy down the URL and then start a browser on your phone (e.g., Chrome) and try to connect to that URL?

I suspect somthing in the way your phone is configured, but it's hard to tell.

Let's see if Jeff has any idea.

@hal Inserting the AI's URL in Chrome on the phone has no effect (goes back to Chrome's home page)
@Taifun I tried the troubleshooting steps:

0) The phone is connected only through WiFi and has a LAN address (192.168.1.119)

1) Both computer and phone can access the MIT rendezvous URL over the internet fine (HTTP, LAN, Router working)

2) Not a troubleshooting test, but both computer and phone can access the web admin pages of my LAN router (192.168.1.1), so they do communicate over the LAN including HTTP

3) Not a step, but the computer can ping other computers on the LAN, so ping is working on the Windows computer and via the LAN through the router

4) But the computer cannot ping the phone ("Destination host unreachable").  In fact, I cannot ping any of the android devices in the house.

5) Just in case, I also tried to telnet from the computer into the phone on ports 8001 and 9987 using PuTTY. Timeout.

Any ideas?  (And if you think this is unrelated to the new release, it's OK to move the thread to a better location, so long as I can find it).

Thanks!

PS: I will soon have access to the phone which was working previously, will try that.  Having both a new release and a different phone complicated debugging, sorry.

New information - I got the phone that was working before (Samsung Galaxy S4), and it still works!
So this is apparently not a new release problem - sorry for misposting.

However I'm still having the same problem with the phones I want to use for my project.  To summarize:
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 (5.0.1) - works, but not the phone for my project
  • LG Optimus Exceed 2 (4.4.2) - does not work, want to use for project
  • LG Optimus Fuel (4.4) - does not work, want to use for project
All 3 using v 2.3.2 AI companion
All can browse the web or access the LAN router web pages
All can access the rendezvous URL
Cannot ping any of them from the computer
Cannot telnet into any of them from the computer

Help!

a few days ago the problem (step 4 not working) was a router issue, see here https://groups.google.com/d/msg/mitappinventortest/VVK7bRrKsrA/frmQ5Z0mDQAJ
it also could be a firewall or antivirus issue

Um, this looks like this was my fault, and the 1101 error had nothing to do with the new release.  Sorry.  It wasn't the router or network, either.

To help others in the future (and maybe to help the helpers to help others with similar errors), the problem was that I was now using a different device (phone) than previously, and did not realize that I needed to run the Connect step again from the new phone before I could load programs (I also had to ignore some brief error messages).

I had pretty much forgotten about the Connect step - when I was using AI with the other phone, I spent my time in the edit/build/scan/test cycle and did not remember that I had once months ago passed through a "connect" step and would need to do so again.

I *think* that once I've done the connect for a given device, there's no need to do it again for that device (even if I load programs into more than one device, switching back and forth), right?  Is there any limit to the number of my devices that AI will remember?

Perhaps it would be good to put a note somewhere to the effect "If you change to another Android device or want to use additional devices, remember to do the Connect step with each one.  If not you may be a 1101 error".  (If that's clearly in the existing documentation, I regret missing it).

Thanks again for your help!

Why is the feedback set as completed without solution provided from MIT App Inventor? Knowing the problem, then what is the solution?

@ Hng

Zeph provided his own solution to his problem.  See Zeph's final post where he answers the question.  That solution may or may not be the solution to your problem Hng.  If you have a problem with App Inventor 2; please open your own Forum discussion.  Do you have an 1101 error with a specific url?   1101 errors can have different reasons for appearing. This error code indicates one of the following: that your device may not be connected to internet properly, that your network may be currently unstable, or that there is a server issue.
