Have you done the LocationSensor tutorial? It is here:
http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/location-sensor.html
Do this, go to the tutorial and download the aia for the Location Sensor Test...the second link below. Compile it and load it
and try it and see if the example app can capture an address. The app is designed to test the features/capabilities of an Android phone or tablet.
Here are some things to check..there probably is a small icon on your phone, it looks like a circle with legs to the N,S.E and W positions. It flashes when the gps is attempting to get a fix and stops when it has a fix. Is that working?
If you are indoors, especially in a building without access to windows, the gps may never get a fix.
Try uploading the aia... you can run it on your phone and it should work (unless your gps cannot get a fix indoors). It will NOT work on the emulator.
Give it a try and let us know what happens.
Could this be an issue with your phone? Certainly. That is what we will find out. You said you had a phone update. If this is still not running, could you tell us the brand and what Android version it is running. It is possible, but not probable a very recent version of Android might have issues, but I can not update my tablet to a higher version to test.
Cross fingers, take a breath and go to the following link:
