Any one have problems with GPS releated blocks  suddenly not working?

I have a routine that uses GPS to get and return your current address and suddenly it stopped working and I only get "No Address Available" as result.

I noticed I had a phone update that coincided with this but I'm only grasping at straws.

any advice is appreciated.

Can you tell us more.  No Address Available is a common Google response if Google Maps can not resolve the coordinates.  Depending on where you are using a gps and quiry for the street address, you may not get an answer.  Change location and try again.    If you are in the middle of the Gobi dessert, you will get no address available but this also could happen in a very populated area depending on your country.

This response you get is most probably  a situation in  which the specific coordinates you are requesting can not be resolved..   Your device might be working properly.   If your phone is using network instead of gps, you might get this response.  This can happen if you are not getting a satellite fix with the gps,.  Be aware,, unless Provider is Locked  on gps, the device will revert to cell phone triangulation if it can not get a satellite fix.   If that happens, the cell phone triangulation frequently can not resolve addresses.

Do you want to try a test?    Hopefully you can manually  input a latitude and a longitude instead of using the coordinates from the location sensor.  Try these coordinates:

 38.897709,-77.036543
You should get the White house on Pennsylvania avenue.

What do you get?

Note, I get correct address on my Samsung Tab II running Android  4.2.2         What version of Android is on your phone?

Regards,
Steve

Thanks Steve,

I played with the blocks a bit and it is returning latitude and longitude successfully so I think you are right that it is maps not resolving the address.

I am locking the provider.. (block images below.)

The odd thing is I have been trying it all over Los Angeles area and it is constantly No Address Available.   the Odd thing is I havent changed the APK version on my phone and it was working very reliably last week from all the same locations I'm testing in now. (Gobi desert not included)

Not to ignore your test but I'm not sure how to query for address from known coordinates like that.

love to try if you can advise how

Have you done the LocationSensor tutorial?      It is here:  http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/location-sensor.html

Do this, go to the tutorial and download the aia for the Location Sensor Test...the second link below.  Compile it and load it
and try it and see if the example app can capture an address.  The app is designed to test the features/capabilities of an Android phone or tablet.

Here are some things to check..there probably is a small icon on your phone, it looks like a circle with legs to the N,S.E and W positions.  It flashes when the gps is attempting to get a fix and stops when it has a fix.   Is that working?

If you are indoors, especially in a building without access to windows, the gps may never get a fix.

Try uploading the aia... you can run it on your phone and it should work (unless your gps cannot get a fix indoors).  It will NOT work on the emulator.

Give it a try and let us know what happens.

Could this be an issue with your phone?  Certainly.  That is what we will find out. You said you had a phone update.  If this is still not running, could you tell us the brand and what Android version it is running.  It is possible, but not probable a very recent version of Android might have issues, but I can not update my tablet to a higher version to test.

Cross fingers, take a breath and go to the following link:

Download the Source File (.aia) for GPS Accuracy Logger       Download the Source File (.aia) for Location Sensor Test
