I am thinking to build MQTT publish/subscribe client app with App Inventor, for example, to show remote room sensors status and turn on/off light through MQTT.

Because MQTT using TCP layer, so I search and found "A Chat Demo with App Inventor and Easy Web Socketwhich look like a nice example. But seem EasyWebSocket does not work anymore.

Can anyone enlighten me an alternate solution please.

Thanks, but sorry pubnub example not help.
Because pubnub base on HTTP, currently MQTT Broker only work with TCP or WebSocket.

you could take a look at this App Inventor Classic example from ShivalWolf http://ai.kittywolf.net/index.php/TinywebIP and in case you find it helpful for your purposes, you could manually translate it into App Inventor 2
