Hi everybody,
I've been teaching a lot of "Getting started with App Inventor" classes in Dublin lately and, as I'm sure a lot of you have experienced, the same issues keep cropping up over and over again on the first day. I thought that with Computer Science week (Hour of Code) just around the corner it might be timely to put some of my resources online for others and get feedback from the rest of the community.
I've previously used slides with screenshots but, because slides are static, if a student looses focus they can easily get left behind.
I also do live demonstrations, which are much more effective, but this means that now I'm static and I can't move around to help people out as much.
What I've done recently is put together a sort of "onboarding" playlist of short videos (10 - 30 seconds) that guide participants from signing in to testing a simple button clicking app.
I know that having videos on YouTube is less than ideal, especially for schools that block YouTube, but think of this as a "beta" version and I'm open to any feedback that you might have.
I've put together a step-by-step for educators on Instructables:
The video-slideshow for displaying on your projector is here (might be slow to load?):
From my perspective I really like being able to walk around the room and move back and forth through the videos with a laser pointer.
There are a couple of things that I'm working on, like "lazy-loading" the videos and having them start from the beginning when each slide gets focus, but I'd be interested to hear what others think. I was originally trying to do this with Google Slides but this was actually easier for me. If YouTube is blocked for you would a PowerPoint be a better solution?
Thanks,
Domhnall.
