Hi Folks,

I was able to create a simple project using the speech recognizer to display speech to text.  It works real well with English.  Is there a way use the speech recognizer  so that it recognizes Korean?  My father has very bad hearing and i thought this could be an awesome app to help him out.  I am using Galaxy Tab A.

TIA,

Thomas Kim

see the documentation http://ai2.appinventor.mit.edu/reference/components/media.html#SpeechRecognizer

The languages and countries available depend on the particular device, and can be listed with the AvailableLanguages and AvailableCountries properties.

Are you talking about text to speech?  I am looking for speech to text.  There is nothing to change the language in speech recognizer block.

To use a version of the SpeechRecognizer that recognizes Korean you may need to change the device Language.  You would go to the device Settings. >General management     then  LANGUAGE AND INPUT, then select Language.

Your device probably indicates English.  Then you can add Korean.    Be careful, if you cannot read Korean, after you make changes, you may not be able to recover the English as the primary language. You could try changing the language and see what happens to find out if the Speech Recognizer will then recognize Korean.  Will It work?   I do not know.

Here is how to change the device language on a Tab II Thomas, http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-do-i-change-the-language-on-my-samsung-galaxy-tab-3/  it should be similar on your Tab A

I hope this helps, I know only a few words of Korean and my pronunciation would never be recognized as Korean. :(.  My advice requires experimentation and you would have to try.

Steve

Steve and Taifun,

You guys are great!  It worked great.  I was able to change the language setting on the tablet to korean and the speech recognizer was able to understand korean.  I've also installed the extension from Taifun and it also worked great.  The good thing about the extension is that you don't have to change the language setting.

One more question.  If i disable the wi fi, the app says "Network not connected" and it wouldn't work.  Looks like the speech recognizer only understand english offline.  If i want to enable korean with no wifi, do i need to download some sort of the language pack?

TIA,

Thomas

Yes.   This might work   ... http://ccm.net/faq/40940-android-download-new-languages-for-offline-speech-recognition    to download Korean for off line Speech Recognition.  Hopefully Korean is a choice.   Is it?

I got it to work.  Basically i am using Amazon Fire 7.  I've installed "Google App" and that installed the components for voice recognition.  From Steve's post, i've looked at the setting on Amazon Fire 7 and it didn't have any setting for "voice".  So i open the "Google App" and in it's settings, there was the voice setup.  From there to "Offline Speech recognition" and fortunately the korean language is one of the languages that the app supported.    After downloading the language pack, i've disabled the wifi and the app worked beautifully.

I am a java programmer myself and worked with GWT and I am very impressed with the app inventor.
