Ok, this is making me go nuts. Had a look through the forums and noticed some people asked for help connecting and all they got were links to the normal help pages around, so bear with me...

Problem: When i try connecting the Emulator or an android device via USB i get the "we are on it" box for a few seconds and then the already hated "Launch the aiStarter program on your computer and then try again"

Now, the aiStarter program IS up and running.

I go to the test page and get:

Is aiStarter running?

YES, aiStarter v2.2 running!

Is your phone connected via USB?

YES, your phone is connected via USB!

I tried it emulator only, and USB and the same for both. I tried it with my project, a test simple project, and a repository project and get the same. Tried it in Firefox 27, back in FF with noScript disabled, and in Chrome and no difference.

aiStarter's window shows ping works on test.  I can run the emulator standalone using the .bat file within the "program files" folder, and tried to connect with it open but that won't work either, i still get "Launch the aiStarter program on your computer and then try again". Not sure if relevant, when running the emulator standalone the console shows no lines...

Have rebooted/unistalled/cleared folder/rebooted/check folder is not there/re-intalled/rebooted twice downloading a fresh aiStarter the second time and it makes no difference. Even made firewall exceptions out of desperation and nothing.

I've read through every help and troubleshooting guide out there and nothing seems to help.

Any idea anyone what could be the cause and how to fix it? I'm running it on Vista 32

Thanks

Hmmmm.    You do not mention what browser you are using.   You can not use Explorer..... Firefox and Chrome and several others work but Explorer ..No.

You did try the standard stuff.     Perhaps something here:

A cornucopia of quick fixes to network connection and emulator connection issues.

Users having adblock plug ins have reported disabling the plugin allows AI2 to communicate properly.

Users having AVG found that it blocked AI2 communications...using the Advanced setting fixed their issues; the save with some other virus checkers.

A quick fix that works sometimes if AI2 'sees' other than the latest version of Companion:    Project > Hard Reset

New users of AI2 report that if they do not have a Project loaded,  Connect > Emulator   causes the emulator to continually try to load.  The solution,
load a project from one of the tutorials shown here:

Beginner Tutorials: For those new to App Inventor!  http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/beginner-videos.html

New users frequently do not upload AI2 Companion from Google Play.  You MUST have the latest version of Companion loaded and installed on your Android device.

load a project from one of the tutorials shown here:

Beginner Tutorials: For those new to App Inventor!  http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/beginner-videos.html

And if the quick fixes do not work..

1) Try re-installing Companion.

Try some more stuff.    Most people do get AI2 working with both the emulator and USB.  Be aware, and lots of people miss this, to use USB you probably will have to load some drivers on to your PC to allow the USB connection to work for developing with AI2.

Anything help you?

Hi Steve. I did try all that before posting...

Browsers i tried FF and Chrome, and with FF i did try disabling both noScript and adBlock.

Already tried disabling al AV's (running ESET), and resets and hard resets in all attempts to connect.

Tried loading the emulator with one of the beginner apps from the repository (something with a cat), and also reinstalled companion in an attempt to get at least the USB working, along with installing the drivers and running the device in debugging mode, which it shouldn't have an effect since the problem seems to be that the browser based page doesn't recognise aiStarter as running in the PC rather than a problem with the emulator or USB connection itself.

Thinking on reaching for the hammer any time now

Cheers

Wow.    Silly question perhaps, what version of aiStarter did you try to install.   The other day someone was trying to install the original aiStarter for use with AI Classic, but he wanted to develop with AI2.

So, are you using the aiStarter on this page http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/windows.html
(AppInventor_Setup_Installer_v_2_1.exe ) ?

I am flagging your note for one of the developers.

Not such a silly question, it's the kind of thing i'd have done and only realise after hours of sweating...

I got the latest version (2.2) from that link and trying it with AI2

Running adbdevices on CMD does show the emulator running if i start it standalone as well, and in Process Explorer it shows running adb and aiStarter.

It is either going to be something really silly or gremlins

Thanks for your help

OK.   Thanks.    After re-installing, make sure you do this:     Connect > Hard Reset   .... if for some reason you also do not have the correct version of Companion, that will fix the issue if you follow the on screen windows that might appear.   If  it thinks you got the right version, it does not appear to do anything.   After you do a hard reset, close your browser, then reset the PC and perhaps you will get a proper link.
