I was trying to resurrect an old app from 2015 for my nephew, but the "My Projects" screen is only showing the newest app I created.  I've lost the backup .aia file apparently so I can't import it into the conversion tool.  I hate the feeling of it being lost forever.  Any chance at all?  Thanks in advance.

Hello Mike

Is it possible that you used a different login in 2015? So the current App Inventor account you are looking at is not the one with the 2015 Project?

The original App Inventor has not been available for several years. it shut down in July 2015.   I believe it is no longer possible to retrieve an app created with App Inventor Classic.   You probably have to rebuild the app using App Inventor 2.  If there is any possibility of a retrieval, someone from MIT might respond here within the week.  Check your post later.

Your saved aClassic Project  would be in a zip file, not an aia, there is a converter that might help you retrieve the code in AI2 format
- You can convert some applications AI1 to AI2 (files .zip to files .aia)
http://convert.appinventor.mit.edu/  which you apparently already found

The good news is App Inventor 2 is, in many ways, easier to use than Classic and it has more tools and flexibility.  You should be able to reconstruct your Project.

Does this help?

Regards,
Steve

Yes, the new version (AI2) logs me in automatically via Google.  I can't remember entirely, but I believe I had logged in using a dedicated username/password.  I tried taking my APK file that I did save, and converting it into a ZIP file.  Then uploaded the ZIP into the conversion tool with no success.  I'm going to guess recreating it via AI2 is my only option, barring MIT can retrieve it.

Yes "recreating it via AI2 is my only option, barring MIT can retrieve it".   Actually using AI2 is your BEST option.  Experience with the upgrade tool varies from Project to Project.  Since many AI2 upgrades occurred since the tool was made available and the tool was not upgraded, I would recode.

Here are some resources to help you learn to use the AI2 tools.  You will find many changes have been made to AI2 since Classic App Inventor.  A very good way to learn App Inventor 2  is to read the free Inventor's Manual here in the AI2 free online eBook   http://www.appinventor.org/book2 ... the links are at the bottom of the Web page.  The book 'teaches' users how to program with AI2 blocks.

There is a free programming course here http://www.appinventor.org/content/CourseInABox/Intro  and the aia files for the projects in the book are here:  http://www.appinventor.org/bookFiles

How to do a lot of basic things with App Inventor are described here:  http://www.appinventor.org/content/howDoYou/eventHandling  .

Just try some blocks and have fun.

Hi Mike,

If you can email me the user account (GMail address) and the name of the project, I will check the AI classic server to see if we can retrieve the project.

Regards,
Evan
