Companion software shows different ip address than my router does

Hello,

I can't get my tablet connected.  Both my tablet and my computer are on the same network.   The computer is hard wired to the router via ethernet and the tablet is wifi connected.  When I look at the router it shows both devices.  The router reports that my tablet's ip address is 192.168.1.70, but the AI companion app running on the tablet shows it to be 192.168.0.116.  Could this be the problem?  If so, how do I tell the AI companion app to use the real address of 192.168.1.70?  If this is not the problem can anyone point me to other ideas?  

Also, I'm using the web based program to try to connect.  I did not download the PC application that is indicated for USB connections because my understanding is that the browser based connection should work without software downloads.

I had already looked at the link you referenced.  I'm stuck on step 3 where you ping the android device.  Neither the address shown in the app (192.168.0.116 nor the ip address shown by my router (192.168.1.70) work with the ping command.  ping 192.168.0.116 says 'request timed out'.  ping 192.168.1.70 says 'destination host unreachable'.   Apparently the app sees the 192.168.0.116 somehow, so I don't know how to proceed.  Thanks for your help.

If you do not pass step 4, your network most likely looks like this.

Many networks have firewalls set up that block connections to the phone. A way to get around this is to use your own or a local computer as a wifi router and have all computers and devices using AppInventor connect to the network using the new router. Why is my phone still not connecting?

Check that your device is connected to Wifi and not the cell network. On some devices and in some locations, even with WiFi enabled, the phone continues to use the cell network. If this is happening to you, you can disable mobile networking (cell phone carrier based Internet connectivity) from your device's Android settings menu.

I don't have the ability to connect my deskside computer via wireless.  So I went to my laptop and did it.  Still could not connect to the Android app, but I am now able to ping from my laptop and have the 192.168.1.116 ip address return the ping.

I went to my router and made sure that the ports 8001 and 9987 are allowed.  I tried telnetting to the Nexus 7 and couldn't, but I've never tried telnet on that connection so don't know exactly what I'm looking for there so I may have other problems.

Is it your understanding that it should work if I have both ports 8001 and 9987 open?  Also I'm still confused on my router because it shows the Nexus device to have the ip address of 192.168.0.70 and not what the app returns of 192.168.1.116.  Do you know of a way for me to run something on my Nexus to show what ip address it thinks it has?

I think, it's a firewall issue, but I'm not sure, let's wait for an answer from Jeff...
