For about a year, a small group of us have been playing regularly on
Thursday nights, and we're looking for a few more drummers.
We're looking for people who want to improve their playing and
understanding of west african rhythms and have fun doing it. We're
looking for someone who can learn and play djembe accompaniments,
calls, and breaks and who is willing to learn dounoun parts -both
ballet and traditional style. (We also cover some traditional solo
djembe parts and techniques for making your own solos, though not
everyone needs to solo). You don't need to be an advanced player to
join us, just somebody willing to learn and work at it. People also
need to commit to playing on Thursday nights.
Since the group is small and we're adding new people, we're working
on basic accompaniments, breaks, and easy doun parts right now for
the rhythms Ndiyanamo, and Fula Fare. We started last year with a
varied group in terms of drumming experience from low intermediates
to advanced drummers and everyone learned and improved a lot in terms
of djembe technique, dounoun playing, timing, soloing, and new
rhythms. If anyone is interested in joining us or finding out more
about the Thursday night group, let me know - d...@bresnan.net or
880-3283 (Group size is limited by the size of our meeting space).
Please pass this along to others you know who may be interested.
Thanks,
Dave Robertson
