Colleagues,
With a new year and a new academic calendar starting, it’s time for me to get the word out on the 2013 New York Times Student Journalism Institute. I want to make sure that every talented young student journalist knows about this extraordinary opportunity to work intensively with the journalists of The New York Times and The Boston Globe.
As you probably know, the Institute has reverted to a once-a-year program, offered in alternating years to student members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, or to student members of the National Association of Black Journalists (and any student at an HBCU). This year, the Institute will be open to students who have signed up for the NAHJ, and it will be held May 19 through June 1, at the University of Arizona, in Tucson.
For two weeks up to 15 staffers from The Times and The Globe will direct 24 students as they cover news in and around Tucson and the border area. Students will be taught to reach for the standards of a great news organization, and they will be shown how to meet those standards. The quality of some of the work produced at previous Institutes has been good enough to appear in the pages of The Times.
The experience is intense, but the atmosphere is supportive, and it builds friendships that last a lifetime. The network that opens to students is an important advantage in the small world of journalism, where contacts make a big difference. Today graduates of the Institute work at every major news organization in the nation, including The New York Times itself.
The postmark deadline for this year’s Institute is March 9. I’ve attached an application and a flier describing the Institute. You can view the work of students in some previous Institutes at www.nytimes-institute.com, where application forms can also be downloaded.
You know who the most talented students are. I’m asking you to help me find them. Please pass this message and attachments along to students, colleagues, contacts or just plain strangers who you think might be interested. And feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thank you for your help.
Don Hecker, Director
The New York Times Student Journalism Institute
