(sorry for the cross post, as I know a lot of you on this list are also on the PSL list)

Hi,

I’m forming a group of people, a social investment group, that will award a $1000.00 grant or prize every month to a social entrepreneur or team in the region. The way it works is that there will be ten of us . We each contributes $100 a month and decide on who gets the grant. The full $1000 goes to the recipient -- possibly in a brown paper bag.

It’s an idea that Philly Startup Leader Founder Blake Jenelle and I came up with about a year ago, but neither of us had the time to do it last year. The inspiration comes from the Awesome Foundation, although unlike AF, this would be focused on supporting social entrepreneurship.

While $1000 isn’t enough to start a business, it can definitely be helpful and it will provides recognition and encouragement to the recipients.

I have a number of people interested in joining, but we still need a few more members.

The time commitment for the group would be minimal. Once a month we would get together to award the prize. We would also hear pitches for the next months prize. All the voting and submissions outside of the monthly event will all be done remotely via the web.

As for who is eligible for the prize, it really depends on what the group decides, but the main criteria would be an existing business/project/organization that is solving social problems in an innovative way or an idea that has the potential to do that.

In addition to this being an interesting way for members to make a difference, I think there will be other benefits of being a member, such as promoting your business through the groups events and website -- not to mention the bribes you will receive for votes (just kidding). You can join as an individual or as an organization.

If this sounds like your idea of fun and you’ve got a $100 a month to spare, please contact me. I also plan to discuss this at the upcoming Socent Philly meeting, so if you can make it please come. http://www.meetup.com/SocentPhilly/events/16928311/

Best Regards,
Sam
