Team:
The National Wildlife Federation, who we are working with under their GreenForce Initiative, has asked us to partner with them on a FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education )grant for sustainability. Several states are involved but not a lot of $$ …50K. The area they want to explore is funding support for applied learning on campus using buildings as learning laboratories ….a la Mission Verde Center. Any way, they asked me last night (yes, several hours turn around!) and I wrote up the attached. Lease let me know if anyone has objection. I’m also planning to submit a support letter as Mission Verde Center Board chair.
I’m thinking this my cover students Windexing the solar panels like we were looking for.
Any problems???
Oh, they need this tomorrow from me
Thanks,
Anson

That’s great! As an update – As I am working on budget, one way to concentrate the resources a bit will be to shorten the implementation timeline a little to 2 ½ years. So it would start jan 2011 and end may 2013 for implementation. Then we would use the final 6 months for writing reports, documentation, dissemination, etc. So funds could be distributed 20K, 20K 10K or something similar. We need to keep it to 50K total but this might help. I’m working on writing up the timeline but thought you might want a heads up on this as you work out your piece.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Anson,
Thank you for being on the call yesterday. I will send out notes from the call
shortly. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know about a potential funding
opportunity to link up green curriculum development and campus greening
efforts.
We learnt about this very recently, but we are planning to apply for a FIPSE
(Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education) grant through the Department
of Education to support our Greenforce work. This funding would
specifically go to help develop 3-5 community colleges nationwide as models of
using the campus as a learning laboratory and engaging students in experiential
learning through campus greening efforts.
The FIPSE Comprehensive Grants Program has been released with a deadline of
July 29, 2010. http://www2.ed.gov/programs/fipsecomp/index.html
Invitation Priority 2 reads as follows: Under this priority, we are
particularly interested in university sustainability initiatives as described
in section 881 of HEA.
The deadline is fast approaching and we want to discuss this with you to see if
it would be a good fit for Alamo. Ideally, the grant would provide Alamo with
$10,000-$20,000 per year for 3 years to build on an initiative (that is already
on its way) that connects campus operations greening and curriculum greening.
The project requires implementation and extensive documentation, as one of the
goals is for these schools to serve as models for other colleges.
Do you have any time to talk with Lisa and me about this tomorrow or
Thursday? I’m sorry for the short notice!
I've attached a rough outline of the proposal we are developing - this is a
work in progress so not all the details are here but I think it will give you
something to follow along with as we talk. I've also attached the FIPSE
budget form so you can see their categories
I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!
Best,
Praveen
