This is just a brainstorm.  Not set in stone.  Let me know your thoughts.

A few of us on the MVC board would like to build momentum at the center with an open house this fall.

Our “task force” for this brainstormed the ideas last week.  We are essentially aligning activities that each of our organizations is going to be doing anyway and using the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” concept to have a pretty attractive event at Mission Verde Center.

Please let me know your thoughts on if we should pull the lever on this idea.

Thanks!

Anson,

I think you could add SU CASA tours to it. We might could also power and or recharge some gear you may bring on site with power from SU CASA. This might could demonstrate the potential better than merely saying that “it can run the refrigerator and stove”. Would need to examine what you would want to power, though. The kicker would be if we had an electric car or neighborhood electric vehicle on site and charged it off of solar/battery – we could take it tooling about campus a few times during the day. I could check with the local EAA chapter of which I am a (rather passive) member on what might be suitable. All that presumes good weather, of course – but hey, this is San Antonio, right!?

Anson,

Do you have any of the solar powered designs from the summer program that the students designed and operated?

With food we will also need health dept. inspections etc…  If we do have food I think we need to do “healthy”.  I had thought about trying to get Produce Row across the street involved – but It might be too late now. Maybe next year.  I’ve attached some brainstorming I did on it a while back – Ignore most of it at this point but it does list possible partners or others we could ask to come have a table.

Have we nailed down the date yet?

Anson has only spoken to me about helping with the grand opening and I shared some ideas. I let him know we could help. Only one of my recommendations was that if he plans to have the community there, he should look at some kind of food i.e. hotdogs, popcorn.

Just let me know. Thanks.

Where are we on the lease (s)? I am concerned about having the rug pulled out from under us.

Hi David, Yes, actually one of these things we’d like to do is have a display with the solar boats and cars and perhaps have the SAISD teacher be on hand to highlight the camp.

Thanks,

Anson

The Mission Verde open house is a great idea. Here are some other event ideas:

Invite a city arborist to do a tree planting demonstration

Invite David Rodriguez (Texas A&M Extension Service) to give a family garden demo

Invite our interiorscaping instructor to do a demonstration on plant care an use of plants to conserve energy

Arrange to run an external plug near a parking area and inaugurate the center’s first plug-in parking spot

Request that the electric vehicle club do a demonstration of their vehicles

This kind of event would definitely notch up the level of community interest in the center.
