I see that on their website, it states that their Photoshop plugin is no longer supported: -us/articles/115002791488-Can-I-still-buy-Knoll-Light-Factory-for-Photoshop- - it looks like Light Factory is more of a video lighting effects plugin now, rather than one for still images like it used to be.
I did do a quick search for some alternative software but I didn't find anything that looked like what I'm looking for...I figured I would try my hand at asking here to see if anyone else has had any experience using any similar lighting software for photography, specifically within Photoshop CC?
yeah, is pain in butt, to figure out everything you got and post it, etc. I didn't even KNOW that your title was a plug in. I thought the factory you referred to was some location you shot stuff at ! hehe... what a dope I am !
For those of you that love good plugins, Knoll light factory is a very cool time saving addition to After Effects. The new edition works with CS5, and has a few new features as well. if you own an older version, you can upgrade for a reasonable price of $99, but if you are a first-time buyer, the price tag is $399.
The reason that Knoll Light Factory is so popular is that it renders light realistically, interacting with your view like a real light source would with a camera lens. John Knoll, the co-creator of Photoshop and the guy that brought you some of the most amazing effects in Start Wars, created these plugins to save you time and give you dimension to your projects.
LIGHTING EFFECTS PLUG-IN
For all of the plug-ins that designers and photographers maintain, many of the third-party products begin with a feature built into Photoshop and take it to a higher level. Such is the case with Knoll Light Factory for Photoshop 3.2 by Red Giant Software. Created with John Knoll (one of the Academy Award-winning people behind the special effects in the motion picture Star Wars at Industrial Light and Magic, and a co-creator of Photoshop), this product augments and highlights light sources in an image, and creates dramatic effects that go beyond the standard Photoshop CS5 Lens Flare filter by many light years.

Celeste Jan 1, 2008 There are literally thousands of plug-ins available for Adobe's Photoshop, from expensive applications created by major software vendors to freeware created by part-time graphic programmers. However, seldom does a plug-in have as close a relationship to Photoshop as Red Giant Software's Knoll Light Factory for Photoshop. The plug-in was created by Photoshop co-creator John Knoll, whose credits also include that of Visual Effects Supervisor for several Star Trek and Star Wars movies.
Knoll Light Factory is focused on creating lens flare effects, one of the most commonly used effects in both photography and film. Lens flares have probably achieved their high degree of popularity because they can occur naturally when photographing or filming any scene that contains a light source, such as the sun (#1). Using software to create a lens flare effect in a photo not only adds brightness and color, but also reinforces a natural look and feel to the photo, since the effect could easily have occurred on its own as a refraction of light off of the camera's lens.
Lens Flares And The Sun
One of the most common uses for a lens flare is to enhance the effect of the sun in a photo (#5). Since lens flares are created by an interaction between a light source and a camera lens, using lens flares with the sun (the single most used light source) is a natural fit.
Knoll Light Factory is an Adobe Photoshop plugin for creating lens flares and other lighting effects. While you could create many of the same effects by hand in Photoshop, Knoll's preset-based approach is much faster and more intuitive. If you want to add digital light effects to your images, this is one of the best ways to do it.
Applying a lighting effect from Knoll Light Factory should be one of the final steps in your workflow. The effect is rendered by the plugin so cannot be modified after it is applied. When you have processed an image to the point where you are ready to apply the light flare, create a new layer on top and merge all visible to it.
Knoll Light Factory 3.0 is a Photoshop-compatible plug-in that allows you to design photo-realistic and enhanced lighting effects. This Photoshop plug-in adds flares, sparkles, rays, and several other natural lighting types to any image.
Knoll Light Factory presents an intuitive user interface that includes controls for applying the premade flares. A custom flare editor lets you create and edit your own custom effects. The plug-in makes a very easy task of constructing naturalistic lens flares by combining any of the 19 different elements that occur when photographing lights and bright objects.
The effects in Knoll Light Factory 3.0 are not limited to pictures. These effects can be applied to plain backgrounds too. However, there are no options to apply these lights to a transparent background.
Supercomp takes the toolset available natively in After Effects a step further, adding 15 separate GPU accelerated tools to help your composites feel more realistic. With tools like LightWrap, which helps create the sensation that the lighting of a scene is naturally "wrapping" around the composited element, Supercomp should help you get to a realistic looking composite faster and with less time spent waiting.
this is a tut on space scapes, but it will show you how to make the light, but not the flares tho i had pretty good results by duplicating the light layer, using the flares.. erasing the light itself from the flare layer, then duplicating the flare layer several times and then merging them to get more solid flares.. added glow and it was cool.. but those polygone shapes would have to be added manualy
Knoll Light Factory is one of the industry's most popular motion graphics tools. It is most famous for its high-fidelity simulations of light effects called flares, which simulate reflections from a very bright light source as seen through a camera's lens. Knoll Light Factory is Hollywood's go-to tool for adding interest to text or logos or extra pop to FX explosions. Now includes CS5/64 bit compatibility, new custom flares, Knoll 3D Flare and a new Lens Designer for Adobe CS5 users.
From the physical theory of lens flare, it is the image of the light source after many times of light reflection between the optical lens surfaces. So it would sound reasonable to add lens flare images to the original image.
