The Source is becoming an increasing crowded venue at weekend. The
meeting should have taken place on 9th May was already booked with a
tournament of some kind. I have set the meeting for Sunday the 23rd
May.

We have three tables booked. I will be using the 'sand table' for a
miniature game. We have two further tables booked, the 'conference
table' with slightly rounded sides and a 7'x4' oblong table.

The problem is we do not seem to be getting support from the MN
Science Fiction community. MISFITS is part of our idea of a year round
convention. We aiming to the top floor of the Sheridan once a month,
aiming to offer miniature gaming, role-playing games an pickup games
as needed. Only the miniature games are currently taking place.

The wargamers on the other hand have step up to the plate and we're
are fast becoming the Sunday Centurions, which is fine for my fellow
miniature gamers; I can normally expect half a dozen or more to
support me. I am not drawing support from the wider SF community.

I do need some of you to set up and supporting the club so we can
broaden our base and become successful. I am therefore sending our a
request not only to the SF community but also to my fellow miniature
gamers. If anyone is either interested in playing or organizing
another some games please let me know.

For May I will be putting on another 10mm Napoleonic period game using
"Napoleonic Command", all levels of experience are welcome. The rules
are straightforward and novel in their approach to gaming. Now if you
can not make this game I will be running the same game the next day
on Monday the 24th at the Source starting at about 2pm one of my
players will be the author of the rules.

I will have problems arranging a game for the 13th June having a
longstanding prior commitment. It is not my intention to shift then
dates to suit me, so I will book space but unless I hear that one of
you is definitely organizing something I will cut back on the space I
reserve.

As a general point The Source is becoming very popular with gamers and
I do not want to rob others of the opportunity to play there by
needlessly taking space. I have previously voluntarily given up space
for pickup games because the SF community is not coming out.

Further to my previous post here last October, I regret to report that
I have lost the AD&D umpire who wanted to run a campaign for MISFITS
because I did not get the necessary support from his natural
constituency in the SF gamers. He has now organized his own group
from, you guessed it, the miniature gaming community.

If you want to help make this group a success in the way the founders
intended please let me know. I feel at present that we are now another
manifestation of the Centurions. Now as a member of the Centurions it
is fine from my point of view to subvert MISFITS but I feel that it
not the only way in which I want to see the group develop. I would
like to see more support for RPG's, or other types of game, not just
historical miniatures. My problem is that I can not do it alone. Other
members of the Centurions are willing to put on games, but they will
tend to be historical miniatures.

For those who do not know the Centurions are a loose confederation of
miniature gamers in the Twin Cities that put on historical games on a
regular basis at The Source, normally on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of
the Month roughly from 11am to 5pm.

There will be no meeting of the Centurions on 1st May because it
clashes with "National Comic Book Day" and the store will be a zoo.
Last year The Source gave away 1/8 off all comics given away in the US
on NCBD.

The current schedule of the the Centurions for May is as follow:

May 7th - Levee Cafe' Hasting MN,- 25mm American War of Independence
- Wilderness Wars
May 8th - Levee Cafe' Hastings, MN- 25mm French and Indian War and a
7 Years War 'BAR' game.
May 15th - 15mm Seven Years War -The Source, using the Koenig Krieg
rules.

The Levee Cafe' cafe is located at 100 Sibley St, Hastings, MN. It has
a bar an dining room downstairs and a function room upstairs is
upstairs. The venue is just off of Hwy 61 in downtown Hastings and we
use it for some of our bigger or longer games.

As with all Centurion games and my MISFITS games, all figures rules
and equipment are provided. All we need is people who want to play is
to turn up.

Elliott

Hello!

Thanks for your post! If I may, I'd like to reply to your points in

Agreed; we're having a bit of trouble getting space for our Tekumel
events there, and we're looking at getting a different venue for the
larger ones.

Well, I can see what you're talking about; I haven't gotten much (if
any) of a response to my postings on either the RPG or miniatures
games that we're having and opening up to Misfits. From the lack of
activity on this group, it would seem like there's not a lot of
interest in gaming amongst the people in the group aside from the
historical miniatures folks. I am hoping that I'm wrong, and that
people will speak up about this.

The idea of a monthly meeting at the Sheraton is very interesting. I
would be happy to bring this to the attention of the Aethervoxes, and
if they are willing to be part of this I think we could offer both
RPGs and miniatures for people. Given the long-standing connections of
Prof. barker and Tekumel to SF/F literature and fandom, I'd think that
this might be of interest to people.

The Source is making a very determined effort to attract as widely a
diverse audience for the store as they possibly can, which is a major
reason why the space there has become so limited. Has Misfits looked
into other venues like Tower Games?

I'm in much the same boat. I have set up two RPG groups that meet on
alternate Saturdays, and while I do have open seats in the 'odds'
group (first and third Saturdays of the month) the 'evens' group
(second and fourth Saturdays of the month) is at this point fully
booked with ten seats; I do have four additional 'guest chairs' that
are always open for people to sit in on game sessions to see if they
like Tekumel and our style of play. However, I didn't get any response
from this group when I'd posted announcements. I don't have an issue
about it; people do have limited amounts of time, after all. However,
as a trend, it's something that I'd be concerned with as it relates to
the overall health of the group and it's activities.

I wish I could be more helpful. I've never been able to find a regular RPG group, so I can't volunteer to run games, but I've been on the lookout for the type of games I'm interested in being run by others. I apologize that I haven't replied about your Tekumel RPG. I am interested, but since Tekumel isn't a specific game that I'm super enthusiastic about and I'm pretty busy, I haven't gotten to it. Nonetheless I'm grateful that you've posted on the mailing list, and hope that other GMs will also post here if they start a game.

Thanks for your support Jeff.

When I took over as the co-head of MISFITS of Gaming (not CONvergence
of Gaming)
I made inquiries on this list if people want games at other venues,
either Tower Games in
Minneapolis or Village Games in Anoka. I received a very limited
response which did not
show enthusiasm for any venue. Since I live a couple of miles east
of the Source it is
my first choice and we have to start somewhere. Ideally I would like
to have others helping run
games throughout the Twin Cities under the MISFITS banner, fulfilling
that organizations charitable
mandate of supporting the SF community.

About the only people I hear from on anything like a consistent
basis are yourself and Ellen.

To Ellen, I'm sorry I not been able to help you further. I do feel
that in many ways I have failed to help you.

Don't worry, it isn't as though you can run 7 games a week by yourself. It's too bad that there isn't a larger community on this list, but it isn't your fault.

@Ellen: Thanks for your comment re my games; we're not so partial to a
specific game system, but the specific world-setting. If you do ever
want to just drop in and visit, you'd be welcome.

@Elliott: Thank you also for your comments. I'll be happy to support
any games or events as best as I and the rest of the group can, but I
guess my question might be what do the rest of the folks on this list
think? If there's no response besides that of Ellen and myself to your
posting, then I think there's a larger issue of the group's viability
that could be addressed.

I freely admit to being a sort of dinosaur, gaming-wise; I still run
things like Dave Arneson did way back when, and like many gamers in
those far-off (and probably quite mythical) days, I do everything from
'straight miniatures' to 'straight role-playing', with every possible
variation in between; I also used to cover the full spectrum of
periods and genres as well, but these days I've concentrated on Prof.
Barker's Tekumel as that's what seems to be in demand from the people
I game with. I've also run game conventions, with the last one I ran
getting 1,500 people attending here in the Twin Cities.

Are there enough interested people, or enough interested gamers, who
would be part of this group? Aside from the connection to Convergence,
which of course is in the process of morphing, what do the people in
the group or on this list have in common? For that matter, has there
been actual meetings that people can go to to meet their fellow group
members?

If I may be frank, I've been involved in gaming since 1972; over all
that time, the one lesson that I think I've learned is that a gaming
group (or as our UK cousins call it, a gaming club) survives because
the people in it want it to. You can have all sorts of interests
within that group, but unless the people in the group participate, it
simply withers away. I'm happy to host events and announce our games
here, but if there's no response at all then I get the notion that
there's nobody reading the list.

Speak up, folks! What do you play, and where, and when?

yours, Chirine

What I've read on this list always sounds like "I'm setting up a new
RPG campaign; please support it!" -- well, my ongoing gaming schedule
is pretty full already, so I don't have time to join a new campaign.
As I've said on the list before, I'd be interested in the occasional
one-shot, but long-term campaigns are right out.

Setting that aside, Elliott's initial email in this thread was kind of
off-putting. To me, it read like it was trying to invoke some sense
of obligation -- talking about needing support in order to "become
successful". Quite frankly, I don't care about that. I joined this
mailing list in hopes that there would be interesting discussions
about local gaming -- and maybe some fun-sounding one-shots announced.
Instead, I read about "AD&D 3.5" (sic) campaigns and complaints that
I'm not "being supportive" enough.

What it really boils down to is this: If you want to "be successful"
in running games under the MISFITS banner, you need to offer a
compelling game to play. If it's a lot of fun, people will come. If
it's not enough fun, or if it's too inconvenient, people won't bother.

Thanks for reading. I hope I wasn't too harsh -- I offer my apologies
in advance if my writing style hurt any feelings.

Chirine,

I had thought that your group ran nothing but Tekumel. I didn't know you had gamed other settings.

I admit to having particular settings that interest me and mainly wanting to focus just on them. The settings/games I am most interested in gaming are (in no particular order) Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Exalted, mythology settings, GURPS Uplift, and Middle Earth (hopefully GURPS, but I'd try any system except D&D/D20).

-->            My long-term goal is to find a group that mostly plays one or more of these. There's a GM in Bloomington who has quite similar interests, but he's in Bloomington, and I'm in St. Paul (for now).

I'm also interested in some other games (Magic, Planescape, Nobilis, Mage: the Ascension, Og, etc.) and open to occasionally trying several others that I've heard of -- I have a complete list in detail that I can post -- but I aim to find a group who mainly has the same interests as me. So for example, while I am willing to try Tekumel, especially at a convention or with a group who shares other gaming interests with me, I'm unlikely to join a group that plays mostly Tekumel (unless I try it out and fall in love, you never know).

The problem that limits me hugely is my lack of a car, which prevents me from, driving to Bloomington, or staying out past 9 pm.

There are not a ton of genres, settings, games, or systems that I'm outright unwilling to play, but because of the difficulty of transporting myself anywhere, I'm unlikely to join even a one-shot unless it sounds like something I'll really enjoy. My life is also chaotic and busy now (and unhappily it will stay this way unless I can find a lasting job). I'm going to move to Edina as soon as I can find a sublet for my apartment.

~Ellen

I'm willing to bring some things on the 23rd to occupy one (or both)
of the other tables. The question is: what?

The squeeky wheel, as the saying goes...if anyone pipes up (either
here or via email or...?) with a request I'll give it priority.
Barring that (ie: no response) I'll show up with a couple things and
see what happens -I can always play in Elliot's game if no one shows
up for anything else.

Okay.

In eleven hours I'll be at The Source (they may not be open yet, but
I'll be there...) with the two spaceship scenarios for the B&P Space
Marines. If anyone shows up to play, fine. Otherwise, I'll busy
myself with annoying Elliot and loitering about the store.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to go today, and that I won't be at the June 13th meeting. I wish I could attend both, but graduation, seeing the doctor, and spending time with family has to be a priority. The timing coincidences are a real bummer this summer, but I hope that you all have fun and that I will be able to join a game session soon, before I move out of St. Paul.
