Hi Mises-TA list members!

Here is how TAing for the Mises Academy will work.

If you are selected to TA for a Mises Academy course, you will receive free enrollment in the particular course, plus a $50 Mises Store digital coupon that you will receive after the course is complete.

(Terminology note, regarding software: "Webex" is the online system we use for our live lectures.  "Moodle" is the online system we use for everything else, including registration, assignments, and grades.

One requirement, due to technical constraints, is that you need to have a PC.  Unfortunately, it's necessary for a key TA task.

Before assisting the class, you'll need to attend an online 1-hour training meeting.
Also, we may need you to help set up the Moodle "Syllabus Page", if it isn't already set up.

You need to be available to attend each online lecture live.  For the vast majority of the time, you can just watch and enjoy the lecture like any other student.  But there are just a few couple technical support things you'll need to do at the beginning and at the end.  Also if any technical emergencies come up, you'll need to try to help.

In addition to the time doing preliminary training/set-up and watching/supporting each weekly lecture, you'll need to do an estimated 1.5 hours/week of other support work.

The following are the regular weekly tasks
  • Editing and improving Powerpoint slideshows
  • Using a Webex program to convert the lecture recording to WMV
  • Uploading and posting weekly live session resources (slides, lecture recordings, and chat logs)
In addition there are the following ad hoc tasks
  • Create various Moodle elements as needed.
  • Responding to student Moodle help requests.
If you are interested, please send me (not the mailing list) an email including
  • The course you would like to sign up for.  You can apply for any course listed here, except for the two Tom Woods courses listed at the top (those are too far along already).
  • One paragraph on why you would be a good fit for this.  Focus primarily on computer skills, dependability, and customer relations.
  • One reference (name, relationship, and email).

Thanks!
Daniel James Sanchez

Greetings Mr. Sanchez,

I'm very excited about the prospect of assisting with the academy!

As I am a college student with a pretty heavy load, the only course listed which I will be applying for is Robert Murphy's intriguing "Austrian Economics 1: Praxeology through Price Theory" (Econ1).

I believe I will be a uniquely superb candidate for the TA position. I am a full time remote technician (Tier II) for Windows-based home systems, and have been for the past year and a half. Before that I was a full time independent on-site technician, and I have experience designing simple websites for home and small-business clients as well. I am quite competent and reliable, and I am free for the summer from college courses (for once), allowing me to focus my energies on the needs of the students and professor. In addition, my job involves extensive customer interaction, so my skills concerning customer relations over electronic medium are especially sharp.

For a reference, I submit my former economics professor, Harold Van Boven, whose email is hvan...@edison.edu. If you are looking for a more professional (or technically-related) reference, my manager's name is Daniel Bell and his email address is db...@computercentersusa.com.

I think this will work out quite well. I hope to hear from you soon!

- Daniel Francis

Clarification... By PC you mean windows-based, right?

Danny,

Will TAing will be an ongoing opportunity? Meaning that if there's
not a course right now that I want to TA for, I could wait and apply
to TA at a future date with a future course?

Also, would I have to purchase the Webex software? (Is the Academy
going to be using Webex for its lectures instead of DimDim?)

Last, it appears that all the TA requirements are more technical in
nature, as opposed to having to know something about the subject of
the class we would be TAing for. Is this correct?

Thanks!
Jessica

When will we be notified of your decision?

I'd like to know too. I assume that since the course I applied for
started that I wasn't chosen, but I would still like to do this in the
future or wouldn't mind helping out for other courses. Heck, I don't
even care about the $50 gift card. I just do a decent job at studying
on my own and couldn't justify the price tag of the courses to myself.

That isn't an indication of you not getting picked: most of the current classes had already started before this list had even started.  I just wanted to give people a few days to apply (it's been less than a week since we started taking applications) so that hopefully we'd get more than we've received so far.  But I'll send out assignments by the end of the weekend.

Thanks so much to everyone who emailed!  The currently posted courses have been filled.  However, there is a course on the U.S. prison system with Daniel D'Amico coming up too!  After I announce what day/time the lectures for that will be, feel free to apply for that as well.  Details will also be forthcoming about another course with Robert Murphy as well.

I would be interested in TAing for one of these courses, or future
courses. I see that there is a current post for TA openings (5.11).
Am I correct in assuming that there are more positions still
available?
