My machine kept detecting the saffire and my DAW and OS told me that it is there but I was not able to record with it and got always generic errors during opening the audio device. Furthermore the saffire mix control kept saying "no hardware connected"

My PC had no firewire inputs on the board so I bought a delock PCI firewire card. The brand is not important, important was the fact that Focusrite supports only VIA and Texas Instruments chipsets on the firewire interface.I was lucky because I had the Texas Instruments chipset and also the card was rated for 400 mbps, just like my saffire needed.

Windows insisted it was a generic VIA chipset so I right clicked onto it, went to settings/properties, picked the "driver" tab, selected "Update driver" then selected the "locate driver on my machine", then clicked "pick one from a list" and got basically two different options:

Firewire is quite old and I guess since windows already provides the drivers for firewire, the PCI card manufacturer relied on windows for matching it's chipset signature to the necessary driver. Either the PCI card manufacturer or microsoft botched things up picking a driver that only "seemed" to work.

Small disclaimer: The process of selecting another driver might use a different wording, I recommend searching for a guide on how to do this if you are stuck or not sure. My windows machine uses a non English language so the guide above might be not entirely accurate on the wording you might find on your machine.

It seems that windows selects the default highest rate e.g. 192k and causes the cycling. By setting a default sample rate locks ok. You can subsequently change the sample rate in saffire mix control and it remains solid

By selecting the legacy driver, I can now use settings in the saffire mixcontrol that the Texas Instrument driver from my previous installations (which worked fine before Windows 10 2009, and have stopped working since the current windows 10 version).

I Tried updating the safire mix control - all of them, 3.4, 3.7, back to 2.4. none work.
I followed the instructions at -us/faq/firewire-cards-windows-legacy-driver-swap to restore the old driver that actually worked.
After the step 12. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer and step 13. Click 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy), Windows paternally and incorrectly informs me "The best drivers for your device are already installed".However, if they were the best drivers my interface would work again, wouldn't it?I am about ready to hang it up & buy a USB interface ENTIRELYAll because MS changed the software WITHOUT giving me a choice. And now won't give me a choice over which driver I want to use.

Have the same issue here, I upgraded to windows 10 build 1909 and having issues with Saffire pro 40 interface. I downloaded mix control 3.7 and it worked fine for a while. Going to download legacy drivers and hope it resolved my case. I'm using a Texas card as well.

This is really annnoying. You could always roll back to the earlier w10 version. Its possible the interface has a standalone mode, so you could use it for its i/o connected to the new inteface. Might be good use for the digital connections. You could also try asio4all universal driver, which doesn't have great latency spec but might work well enough.

Again i hate the obsolescence thing, but given its our world right now, we really have to be more responsible as equipment owners to backup our data, and dilligently save OS install versions, and especially drivers, so we can keep legacy systems running. Most of the issues are on the software side, not the actual computer hardware. This is infuriating on one hand since its just code, on the other hand if your software is backed up and organized, its good that hardware will run it for a long while, at least up to this point.

Are they using the legacy firewire driver? If so, it may have been replaced by the newer driver, which is better for everything other than audio.

I did use legacy 1394 driver before with little success, as my Saffire when powered on with the legacy driver were outputting some weird and disconcerting noise I didn't want to experience. After that, my system was always running on Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant 10.0.18362.1 - before updating to 1909, and afterwards.

But! According to your recommendation, I tried installing the legacy one again. I did so, removed Focusrite drivers, and did a clean install of Firewire drivers and most up-to-date Focusrite drivers. What happened was the good old noise in the speakers, so I was bummed. Then, I re-did the procedure, but with Texas Instruments driver for the Firewire controller, again re-installing Focusrite drivers as well.

Summary: If your Saffire 56/40 are giving the no connection warning, restart the computer with a Saffire connected and powered on. If the FW800/400 driver is not loading in system report then you have a faulty Saffire.

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and may get some things wrong. I have a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 which was relegated to be a mic pre after Windows 10 and Focusrite dropped it like a stone. It wont work via the firewire ports because of the lack of driver support. As a preamp I have it sending 8 channels via Adat to an Audient ID14 which only has Adat in. My question therefore is, would a Digiface USB allow me to use the Saffire as a sound card again in a stand alone mode with the Digiface sending DAW returns back to it via the Adat in on the Saffire.

But I wonder how you will set the routing for the Saffire Pro 40 for stand-alone mode if there are no Win10 drivers anymore? Or if you ever want to have routing changes. It's all too complicated to impossible if there are no drivers.
