Petrel is a software platform used in the exploration and production sector of the petroleum industry. It enables the user to interpret seismic data, perform well correlation, build reservoir models, visualize reservoir simulation results, calculate volumes, produce maps and design development strategies to maximize reservoir exploitation. Risk and uncertainty can be assessed throughout the life of the reservoir. Although some other oil servicing companies hire the services of this software, Petrel is developed and built by Schlumberger.

Petrel software was developed in Norway by a company called Technoguide.[1] Technoguide was formed in 1996 by former employees of Geomatic, some of whom were key programmers involved in the early development of RMS. Technoguide made 3D geologic modeling more accessible to all subsurface technical staff, including those without specialist training. Developed for PCs and the Windows OS, Petrel was commercially available in 1998. The Petrel user interface has a pre-arranged workflow to facilitate its use.

In 2002, Schlumberger acquired Technoguide and the Petrel software tools. Schlumberger currently supports and markets Petrel. Newer versions of Petrel include additional functionality such as geological modeling, seismic interpretation, uncertainty analysis, well planning, and links to reservoir simulators.

The Petrel 2007.1 release expands the application's seismic-to-simulation scope with greater capabilities for exploration workflows. Petrel software now handles large-scale seismic surveys and regional scale 2D lines. Fracture modeling and dual porosity capabilities support carbonates and unconventional gas workflows. Real-time updates are available through WITSML, the industry standard data delivery mechanism. Petrel 2007.1 software was built on the Ocean framework which allows 3rd parties, universities, oil companies and other parts of Schlumberger to code directly into Petrel.

Released in February 2009 this is the first version of Petrel to be fully 64 bit and to run on Microsoft's Windows Vista 64 bit OS. This brings large performance benefits to users especially those working in exploration or with large seismic volumes and geological models. Other enhancements include a new type of Seismic Inversion called Genetic Inversion based on a non-linear multi-trace approach. Multipoint Geo statistics, completions modeling, automated fault polygon generation and a new synthetic seismogram package called Seismic-Well-Tie.

Released in May 2010. Major enhancements include a new structural modeling workflow enabling the user to build water tight structural models while interpreting. Other enhancements include improvements to the fracture modeling, multipoint Geo statistics, and the volume interpretation workflows. This version also integrates Petromod for petroleum systems modeling and RDR's advanced structural and fault analysis module enabling an integrated approach to exploration to analysis Trap, Seal, Reservoir, & Charge in the same place. Building on the Ocean framework this release coincided with the release of the Ocean Store and online store where users can download plugins for Petrel. You can contribute your plugin to Petrel software.

I'm migrating an Plugin from 2013.1 to 2014.1 Petrel Ocean version. When I try to generate the PIP file through PluginPackager.exe in version 2013.1, its functions normally. However, in version 2014.1 the following problem:

Unlike what happened in version 2013.1, everything indicates that the execution of PluginPackager.exe (2014.1) is doing a pre-validation and loading of all assemblies and their references present in the output directory.

Coming from linux as my primary development platform I am astounded at the lack of toolage provided by the .NET framework to introspect dependencies. I found references to some third party tools (Dependency Walker, .NET Reflector), and eventually found:

I couldn't get fuslogvw to work (or maybe I just didn't know where to look -- what's a wininet cache?), but there's a community addition at the bottom of the page explaining what registry settings to tweak:

The Petrel E&P software platform offers geoscientists and engineers a single platform for collaborative workflows with best-in-class technology and leading innovation. From seismic processing to production, the Petrel platform enables seamless integration across all subsurface domains, enabling you to deliver your best field development plan.

The Studio platform has retired support for Oracle deployments and any existing Oracle connections will be hidden when selecting a Studio 2022.1 database connection. Oracle has also been removed as a service provider when creating new connections in the Petrel platform. For more information or to find out more about migrating your Studio platform installation to SQL Server, please contact your local account manager.

Petrel 2022.1 delivers a raft of usability improvements in the well section window, making day-to-day interpretation tasks easier. From well header text autowrapping to displaying pattern and color of point well data, well top attributes, and checkshots, working in the well section window has never been easier.

Layering support has been added to the interpretation and intersection windows in Petrel 2022.1, enabling users to change and update the order of displayed objects the same way you can for map windows.

Importing raster logs into the Petrel platform is now more flexible as you no longer need a reference file (*.lic, *.xml, *.sif, *.reg) to complete the import and to use the legacy raster functionalities. Once imported, you can use the new Raster Digitization dialog box to manually digitize raster logs and bitmap logs.

In Petrel 2022.1, it is now easier than ever to manage your well top interpreter preferences. Ensure that the well top picks interpreted by your expert are given priority when creating surfaces and when well tops are displayed in the well section window.

Petrel 2022.1 delivers performance improvements for surface creation and conversion, enabling you to work faster and focus on the analysis and decisions that matter. Creating a dip/azimuth surface is now 4 faster than previous versions of the Petrel platform, and converting a surface to points is now 2 faster.

The compression method used in the Petrel platform has been updated to OpenZGY compression. The open-source format uses a similar algorithm to the previous method, has a more uniform noise signature and is fully supported in The Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) and Petrel platform workflows. The new compression method also does not require the creation of an intermediate uncompressed ZGY, and directly outputs ZGY from SEG-Y files. ZGY files created using the old-style compression method are fully supported in Petrel 2022.1 and in future versions of the platform.

RESERVOIR MODELING

Improvements in the accuracy and reporting of volume calculations is delivered in Petrel 2022.1. When overlapping boundaries are provided in 3D volume calculations and map-based volume calculations, it is now possible to display the correct results of individual or subset boundary filters in the Histogram window. Additionally, you can now disable the automatic reporting of region properties in the volumetric spreadsheet, thereby improving reporting performance.

RESERVOIR AND PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

You can now define simple logic for assigning or modifying fields of several flow entities based on given conditions using a compact tabular input as a new template in Field Management. It internally expands to a sequence of static lists, dynamic lists, actions, and instruction.

The Petrel E&P software platform and Studio E&P knowledge platform bring benefits to all geoscientists and engineers, including seismic processors, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir modelers, reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, production geologists, and data and information managers. They can be deployed by companies working in exploration, development, and production for either unconventional or conventional reservoirs.

With newer versions of Petrel, the Project.ProjectVersion property will return a value that directly maps to the Petrel version. For example, a project saved with Petrel 2011.2 will have the Project.ProjectVersionvalue of "2011.2". However for projects created with older Petrel versions, the format is different. For example, a Petrel 2007 project might have the value 1024 and a Petrel 2005 project might be 824.

Here is the list of Project.Version possible values and versions of Petrel they translate to. Please note that in Petrel 2014.1 there will be a new Ocean API providing a Project's VersionInfo structure with a full version information, including string version, major, minor version numbers etc. Project.Version property will be obsolete in 2014.1.

The Ocean for Petrel Framework 2022 is now available on the Ocean Store. This release contains a variety of new features targeted to better our API offering and developer experience. Be sure to read the release notes for more details.
