The two previous wrevels in this series have been held in York, a
venue which has proved popular, easy to reach and highly successful.
In accordance with tradition, therefore, this year's wrevel will take
place in Oxford.
To ensure the best probability of typical British weather, combined
with the greatest number of people thinking "Oh, it's bound to be fine,
I'll leave my thermals and the heavy macintosh at home", the date
has been chosen to be the weekend of 27th - 29th October 2000.
What delights and entertainments will be on offer? I hear you cry. [Pauses,
waits impatiently tapping foot. Nothing. Not a sausage. Shrugs shoulders
and continues anyway.] I'm glad you asked me that. There's bound to be a
wide range of activities, something for everybody's taste. For example:
- Historic Oxford (A visit to the oldest pubs)
- Oxford: a changing city (A visit to the newest pubs)
- Oxford: Town and Gown )(A visit to student pubs)
- Literary Oxford (A visit to all the pubs where Morse has found himself
temporarily out of cash so Lewis has had to pay for the round (This could
take all weekend))
Well, you get the idea.
Right, that's got the infomercial out of the way, now for your part.
Who's interested?
john (for the local disorganisers)
Taylors, the delicatessen in St Giles do a very good hand-made selection
of chocolates and there are any number of cheese shops (though of
course, none of them have any cheese *as such*)
In amongst all the cultural pursuits outlined earlier, therefore, there
will be time set aside for eating, talking, sightseeing, trying to get
thrown out of restaurants and even a few writerly games.
And as a special treat for Steve, I've unearthed a bottle of Rape Mead,
vintage 1980, I think. When I last tried some, it was awful. If you want
to know whether it's mellowed with age, you know where to be in October.
john(I think I might be in Spain. Or Rumania. Or anywhere. Except Slough)

Very interested, but afraid I probably won't be able to make it - v.
difficult to be away overnight :-( I'll be there in spirit though -
moreso than if I had to drive home :-)
How about a web presence for us benighted souls? Virtual Cheese and
Chocolate?
Brian
any reason why such a cold, dark dismal time of year has been chosen, John.
early to mid to late September when there is still light and 50s 60s during the
day might be another suggestion

As I recall the main constraints were Artisan tour dates and religious
festivals which affected the price of airline tickets from the Middle East.

university terms start)
All are invited. All are welcome.

I am. I'll try to come, but I'm not entirely sure yet.
Incidentally, I've already tried to email, but I don't think it's got
through.
(and I've lost your original post, so I had to piggyback off of
Steve's reply. Not a good day computerwise :-)
