it's the low overhead.
the material costs for production could hardly be any more
inexpensive.
(only prostitution itself has a lower overhead).
so since the material costs of writing are so cheap (and readily
available most anywhere) this gives the writer much flexibility, and
mobility, and freedom, especially in regards to being at the mercy of
a given "employer".
however, this also means that, as a "profession", there's an
incredible amount of competition.
everywhere.
since the "barrier to entry" is astoundingly low.
so in that way, the "material costs" are MUCH higher than any other
"profession".
but you certainly wouldn't know it by most all of the best selling
material out there in the marketplace.
(only prostitution itself has a lower quality per quantity ratio).

I find writing the most expensive thing a person can do. The
investment is huge. Time and opportunity earn no interest and once
used up they are gone for ever, never to be recaptured. Money is a
poor player on the stage of a writer's life.
