My name is Laurier Côté, I'm a writer.I was lurking for sometime now and
I thought that it would be a good idea to introduce myself in here. So
here it is.
First, let me tell you right now that english is a second language for
me so... I'm doing my best.
Have fun about my spelling or whatever, I don't care. Try to write in
french as I do in english and we will be on same grounds and laugh
together. I won't answer to any stupid question on any political
bullshit on cultural differences between canadians and americans or even
martians (among many other things, we all live and die and that's a
fact) or will answer on this group to questions on what is it to be a
french canadian writer living in the province of Quebec who will
eventually separate herself from Canada, etc... I'm a writer, not a
politician. I don't want to start anything with canadians writers here
or anglophone writers from Quebec.
Anyway, at 44 I'm not a kid anymore and I have a good sense of humor but
I hate stupidity.
Hey! Aren't we here because we love «writing»? Some of us are working
real hard to earn a living out of it and I'm one of them.
So I'm a french canadian published writer (5 books already published in
french, and 3 of those books have been published with a very serious
publisher who is in business for more than 50 years now) and I have
someone actually translating my work in english. I gave up trying to
directly write in english, I'll never master this language enough to
build novels or short stories with interesting structured sentences and
good vocabulary, as I do in french. So I wrote and published short
stories and few novels (2 more novels are actually in serious progress)
science fiction shorts stories, fantasy shorts stories, an historical
thriller, etc... I'll post the details with publishers names and
I.S.B.N. numbers on the special list of the maintainer (is it the good
word?) of the misc's FAQ.
I won't post very much here because I'm very busy, but I'll read what
will be of some interest for me and flush what's not.
In addition to my creative writing, I also am the redactor-in-chief or a
little magazine out here, It give me enough to put some butter on my
bread and that's all I need (not going for any BMW...), I mean me, and
my family (my wife Mona-Lisha and 2 teenagers). I'm also occasionally
doing papers for local newspapers, as a freelance journalist (in french
and in english). Lot a work for few dollars but it keeps me in the
action and let me have few hours away from my computer.
I'm working home and when I look through my windows in my office, at my
left I got the mountains of the Forillon national park and when I look
in front of me at 45 degree to my right I see what we call here the
ocean. It's the St-Laurent Golf that is so large, in front of the
Gaspesian peninsula that we call it «sea». Anticosti island is the
first thing you can encounter, by boat, at more than 80 miles in front
of my backyard. The place I live is called Anse-au-Griffon (probably
because 300 years ago someone saw the bald eagles that are still in our
region and called them «Griffon», an old french word for a mythological
beast, half bird and half lion, and the name stayed for this place).
I can't live without writing, it's my oxygen and I become really grumpy
when I have to be away from it for too long (a couple of days!). I read
a lot in french and in english. So, that's about it!
Thanks if you didn't flush this already. For those who asked themselves
how come «wolfy» in my EMAIL address, it's because 4 years ago my
nickname was «Wolf» and I moved and lost my internet address and when I
came back «Wolf» was not available anymore as a name so I took «Wolfy».
My few friends are calling me «Wolf» for 30 years now, because I usually
don't like to be with too much people around, I love to be alone, and
because when I was younger I was going out only on full moon (that's
what they say!) and because I'm faithful and protective for my family
and my few friends and can be very dangerous (but only when one attacks
me or my relatives).
I am a very peaceful and cool guy and with my 250 pounds and 6 feet
tall, people don't fool around with me, they don't want it.
Cybernetically yours,

Laurier Côté, writer.

You may be encouraged to know that Vladimir Nabokov also
has english as his second language, and he did pretty good.

Welcome Wolf. Enjoy the group and please offer anything you have time to
offer. I personally appreciate all the different views on this group, and I
try to keep my mind open.

Your English is not so bad. I would not have known it was a second language
had you not mentioned it, but then I live in Kentucky and here, we have a
language all our own!

Anyway, glad to have you!

Thanks to you too! I'm enjoying it already. I'm trying to have an open mind too.
Part of this whole business of writing is to try to be a «mind opener» isn't? Or
maybe I got it wrong, long time ago?I should have listen to my mom and be a
plumber. ;-)

Very kind of you. It's getting better. When we are writing our stories and books
don't we also have a language of our own? I'm creating words sometimes... I
wonder how my translator will do with those...

Ah, yes! I was born and raised in Indiana, lived in Kentucky for 10 years, and
now live in Canada. Whilst writing for a newspaper, I had to learn to speak
and/or write "Southern," and never really got very good at it. ;-)

Hi Laurier, how's it going? Your english is pretty good, a lot better
than some people I've met who claim that English is their first
language. :-)

Wow, so your mentality is a lot like that of a wolf's. Well, I often go
out and howl when I see a full moon, but that's about it. I love
wolves, though, and have read a fair bit about them. If you're
interested, you might want to also check out alt.wolves (I've been
lurking there for a while). A lot of people there know a lot about
wolves, especially the reintroduction of wolves to certain parts.

I'm from Ontario, and I have to admit that I am a bit of a politician,
as in, I follow Canadian politics a fair bit. Like most Canadians, I'm
hoping that Quebec doesn't seperate from Canada. I'm also from
Australia, and Australians right now are thinking about seperating from
the Commonwealth, so I am facing seperation issues on both countries!

I'm not a professional writer... I only write as a hobby, mainly short
stories and poems, and I've been looking into getting a few of them
published. Well, not right now, since I'm trying to get my academic
life back on track (I'm an Electrical Engineering student on a co-op
work term right now).

Cheers,

James
