when i was much younger...

in my early to mid teens...

i used to carry around a notebook in school.

and everywhere else, too.

well, eventually it became several notebooks, but only one at a time,
as they got filled.

...

so anyway, i'd always have a notebook nearby. usually.

in it i wrote poems, and songs, and whatnot, sometimes essays.

lots of teenage angst and other typical bullshit.

i was very profound. yep.

and i doodled some drawings here and there.

also used it as a cash-balancing register on one page.

paper route map, poker debts,
who i owed, who owed me,
how much i needed to save up, etc..

list of things to buy,
list of things to do,
appointments, and so on.

invention sketches, whatever.

so, anyway, one of the things i frequently did with this notebook was
take polls.

i'd come up with a question of some sort and then go around asking
everybody i came across what they thought.

and i'd write down their answers.

friends, family, teachers, strangers, whoever.

it was fun.

sometimes i'd even take movies of these brief interviews.

super 8. three-minute reels. expensive hobby.

with a cassette tape recorder and microphone for later synching.

playing back the spliced together three-minute reels w/ the separate
movie projector was always a challenge because the stupid film would
frequently jam up.

but all my friends loved these films.

...

apparently, i grew up in the television generation.

though i don't recall other people around me doing this kinda shit
unless i persuaded them to join me.

except maybe on tv.

or at the movies.

...

eyewitness news.

what a goofball i am.

what maybe? "I used to have a notebook, and I would write things in
it, blahdeblah blah blah." How novel. Who would ever have thought of
such a thing? Clearly you're a creative genius, because you wrote
things in a notebook -- notes, if you will -- and we're only now
finding out about it, smacking our foreheads and going, Why didn't I
think of that?
