we needed peace, they gave us war.
we needed war, they gave us truces.
we needed space, they gave us evictions.
we needed time and patience, they gave us shoves and pushes.
we needed medicine, they gave us poison.
we needed food, they gave us candy.
we needed rest, they banged on cymbals.
we needed a laugh, they gave us something to cry about.
we needed love, they gave us hatred.
and now, when we don't need them at all, they demand leniency.
we needed truth, they gave us lies.

Almost.
We 'wanted' x, but they 'knew' we needed y, so they gave us y.
They did get re-elected in 2004, so they must have been making someone

<swiping Mr. Zero's dark chocolate and scampering off>
