The world’s oldest romantic novelist told yesterday why
her heroines always fall in love with mature men – before
enjoying the obligatory happy ending.

Ida Pollock, who is 105, has written 123 books full of
adventure, passion and heartbreak including White Heat,
Mountain of Dreams, Love in the Afternoon and The Man Who
Came Back.

Ida’s stories, including 70 for Mills and Boon, have sold
millions of copies in over 70 years as a writer but she
has avoided the limelight by using 10 pseudonyms.

She said yesterday: “A romance is never just a romance,
there has to be adventure, mystery and movement.

“You need a grand, dramatic setting – the Swiss Alps were
always an personal favourite of mine – and a chance
meeting, on a train, a cruise, or perhaps the hero and
heroine find themselves shipwrecked on a desert island.

“The men are normally rich, well-to-do – but never vulgar
with their money.

“Young men lack the maturity to take control so an older
man is essential to provide the reassurance the heroines
need.

“There’s always a fair amount of turbulence before he
sweeps in to save the day. A happy ending is an absolute
must.”
