Chris,

How about the butler from the "Arthur" movies? John Geilgood? And
Alice from "The Brady Bunch"?

P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves is probably one of the most famous butlers in
fiction. At least a dozen books about him and his master, Bertie Wooster.
Also "The Admirable Crichton". The author escapes me for the moment but
there was an excellent movie made years and years ago with Kenneth More
(famous English actor) in the title role.

Bunter in Dorothy L. Sayers' Peter Wimsey novels.

The guy in Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro.
The butler in Chandler's The Big Sleep.

Butlers who "did it" in every mystery in which
"the butler did it," none of which I can remember
at the moment -- maybe because the butler never
does do it ...

How 'bout the definitive butler?

P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves. He was the model for every butler after him.

The silent dwarf Butler from the television series The Prisoner--
We all thought he was NO.1--he wasn't. ;)

The blind butler from Mystery By Death--definitely a cherished role of
Sir Alec Guiness...

Most famous around here is the recently booted boozing butler, Bernard
Lafferty, of the late Doris Duke. The theory is that he and the doctor
hastened her demise in order to get the $5 mill. as executor.

Several have mentioned both Jeeves and Bunter (Peter Wimsey's man) as
candidates for famous butler. But is this really appropriate? After
all, Jeeves always referred to himself as a "gentleman's personal
gentleman". His duties also included waiting at table for his master,
but does that make him a butler? After all, he cooked for his master,
too, but that doesn't make him a cook! On the other hand, he was
sometimes loaned out as a butler to Bertie's Aunt Dahlia, so maybe that
counts. At any rate, we should probably include his Uncle Charlie
Silversmith, from whom he inherits the "buttling" gene.

Bunter, on the other hand, never was a butler in the strict sense, so I
don't think it would be appropriate to include him in this category.

Just babbling in the middle of the night ....

Well known to the citizens of MWVille, is Judge

+++++++++++++++

How about Alice (Brady Bunch)?
And Hobbs (Arthur's butler)? (Was that his name?)
There was a maid on the Jefferson's that was hilarious, but I don't
remember her name.

bit of a stretch, but you could consider Kryten on the Red Dwarf SF show to be
a butler. Albeit a mechanoid butler, who does more than "butle" :)

Definitely Alfred from Batman... The man can take care of everything and
keep a secret exceptionally well, all the while dealing with the duality
problems of Bruce Wayne.
