I am posting this message as a favor for my friend Joseph Mathews.
He is a 17 year old High School student from Michigan. Since his freshman
year, Joseph has had a fasination with completing a motion picture script.
In this event, he created Halloween 7. This script was so well done
(better than any of the past Halloween scrpts) I attempted to pass it onto
Joe Chapelle, the man in charge of the future of the Halloween movies. By
contract, he wasn't able to buy the script, but rumor was he wanted to use
it very badly.
Joseph didn't stop there. He went on to create a whole new twist to
"Dark" movies. He created "Sin" a original dark horror film where a
damned Angel must face the hells of modern soceity on Earth. This script
has been luring around underground world for six or seven months now. It
has been passed around to college students attempting to show Josephs
talents.
Since "Sin", Joseph has written seven other scripts. Ranging from
Horror to Romance, all with a dark shadow luring over them. All of his
scripts are original and have a continuous theme of Angels attempting to
make the world a better place. But this theme is not visual to the human
eye. The only way you would be able to notice this theme is if you stoped
and compared all 7 of his writings.
I promise you that Joseph is a natural (I wouldn't be wasting my time
doing this if I didn't think so) He is so good at writing, that when he
showed "Sin" to his english teacher, she immaediatly brought him over to
the "Gifted and Talented" department of the school and enrolled him in
their program. All Joseph wants to do now is get his movies onto the big
screen. That is the purpose of this letter.
I am not 100% keen on how this stuff goes, but for some reason every
company we send his scripts to are not able to read them. They say they
can only use their screenwriters. The purpose of this note is to contact
anyone out there that is able to read his scripts and has connections to
making his scripts into films.
If anyone is intrested in reading either "Sin" or "Son of Angels"
please Email me and I will Email you a copy ASAP. He wants as many people
as possible to read his scripts. It doesn't matter if your not in the
movie business, if you want to read a damn good dark horror movie, please
Email me. All I ask of you is that you reply back with your opinion of
the script. What would you change? What would you take out? Anything
that is on your mind about the script, Joseph wants to hear. If you work
for a motion picture company and would be intrested in making it into a
movie, please state that with your reply to this note.
This note might not make him big, but I gaurentee you will see the
name "Joseph Mathews" very shortly.
Thank you for you time,
Josh Palmer

Fascinating. By coincidence, I am represented by the same agent that
represents Joe Chappelle. Your friend Joseph might want to reconsider his
Halloween 7 submittal. While Mr. Chappelle directed the most recent
Halloween, the real person in charge of the future of Halloween movies is
Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax. At this time, I believe Kevin
Williamson (Scream) has been slated to write the next Halloween movie.
Joe Chappelle is currently wrapping physical production on his latest film,
"Phantoms" which was adapted from the Dean Koontz novel of the same name.
"Phantoms" is also a Miramax movie.
Your friend Joseph should probably look up someone at Miramax to submit his
scripts to ... or try contacting Kevin Williamson. Williamson is a new young
writer who recently broke big in the same genre and is now considered the
hottest writer in horror movies.

Where do we start? You want your friend's scripts to get read right.
I have to two suggestions.
First, he should try and get represented. Agents earn their money by
knowing which companies are interested in scripts, and which aren't.
They have the contacts and the experience you don't. There is lots of
advice floating around the Net on how to get representation (check out
http://www.teleport.com/~cdeemer/ for starters). You can also find
agency lists or get the WGA list (which is only a dollar or two).
Completing seven scripts is a positive (especially if they are good
scripts) - it lets the agent know you're not just a one shot wonder.
But above all, when querying production companies or agencies, be
professional. You want to delete everything from your approach which
screams "amateur". People with money aren't going to be particularly
impressed by a high school English teachers opinion (sad but true).
They definitely won't want to hear about a Halloween sequel that
cannot possibly be sold. The quality of the individual scripts is
going to be more important than overriding themes that are only
noticeable when all seven scripts are read.
Getting an agent is the traditional way to break in. However, there
is another option open. There are lots of production companies on the
Net that will accepts submissions. By that I mean, most of them are
open to being sent a logline or *short* summary of the script. If
they are interested, they'll get in touch. Don't expect to reach any
majors this way. Most of them are small independents or newly formed
companies or backyard operations or just plain frauds and charlatans.
Its up to you to judge whether any particular company is worth
approaching. I have absolutely no idea of how successful such an
approach might be, but you could give it a shot.
Finally, if you want to get the best advice on the quality of your
friends scripts, you might want to submit them for criticism and
coverage to a professional. There are reputable script consultants on
the Net, though again personal judgement dictates which you should
use.

A) If this kid is so "gifted" why can't he write his own pitch?
B) Why can't this wunderkind figure out how to market his screenplays on
his own like the rest of us?

Have *you* written something that has inspired someone that much? If not,
don't let your jealosy rain on someone else's parade.
Your hostility might serve your scripts better than this newsgroup. Channel
it there.
