"We've been in this house over 40 years and I'm 79 years old, so this
room is full of my past. Some years ago, a very enthusiastic cleaning
lady took all my books out to dust them while we were away and put them
back in such a strange order I've never been able to find anything
since. But the shelves make a very good place to display pictures.
There's a photograph that I took of my son Adam being given a lift on
the back of the great Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert. I used to do a lot
of climbing, and there are an awful lot of
pictures of, now dead alas, climbers.
