I am writing a private memoir that I am not interested in
"publishing", but only formatting and printing about a dozen copies
for my family.

Is there any software that would help me in printing a short book of
less than 100 pages.

I would like to print my memoir in a 6" x 9" page size format that
could I could possible bind myself.

I am trying to make the finished memoir more more professional looking
than printing it on standard

8.5 x 11 inkjet paper??

Thanks for your help!

Various book templates are available for Microsoft Word (& other text
editors) which help you create a 6x9 finished project.

Try this search
<http://www.google.com/search?q=book+template+(6%22+x+9%22)> and look
through what you find. There are free downloads and downloads that cost.
Check out the free downloads and see if any have what you need.

If you can't find what you need with that search, be sure to come back
and tell us what you found, why it didn't suit your needs, and what you
need that you couldn't find.

Best

Sal...

Thank you very much for your help. I found a lot of information from
your suggestions. I was unable to find any information on binding the
pages. As I am only planning to make a half a dozen copies, do you
know of any method I could use to bind these copies myself?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated

Consider that you can print a book at lulu.com for a price not much
more than you'd spend copying it. The instructions for doing so are
at
http://www.lulu.com/publish/books/?cidpublish_portal

There are other services that do much the same thing, but I've used
lulu and I like the results. What you get at the end is a professional
looking product that might as well have come out of the bowels of
Random House or Putnams.

I've formatted and set up a couple of books for friends, one 326 pages
and one 120 pages.

1. If your manuscript is in Word, you can go to /File/Page Layout and
set the page size to 6 x 9 and the margins to 0.7" all around.

2. Use control-A (Select All) and change the font to a proper book
font like Bookman or Book Antigua, and the type size to something that
looks right.

3. Make a proper title page, dedication, or anything else you want to
do, and start fresh chapters on a new page.

4. Decide on a cover design or use one of the stock designs that they
supply. Be sure to leave plenty of space around the margins, since the
manufacture trims a little bit off all around.

5. Go to lulu.com and set up an account. Then just follow the
instructions. You upload your word file and your cover art, and add
the spine title and other details. Lulu will prompt you, and you can
go back and change anything at any point. Just make sure the
distribution is set to 'private' (you can change this later) so only
you can access the book.

When you're done, lulu will tell you how much the book will cost you.
I know that a 326 page book, cover and all, costs $10.80 a copy, plus
shipping, and a 120 page book is about $7.00 (I've forgotten this
exact figure).

Lulu recommends getting a proof copy to check over before ordering the
final copies. Ignore their blandishments to buy a 'distribution plan'
since you don't intend to make the book public.
