It started, allegedly with a Mr. Denson, who has for years written
articles complaining about empty buses going through his neighborhood.
He has since allegedly poisoned the Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce with
that rhetoric, and also the Utah County Commission (government) was
also poisoned by it.
They all then approached, allegedly, UTA and said they wanted to have
full buses, yes, all of them running full, and they all fell in line
behind that rhetoric.
Now, UTA: Before this becomes your waterloo here, please answer the
following questions. You have 'run out of lifelines' as the game show
says, so you need to come up with some answers to some really tough
questions.
No, you won't win that million dollars, but you may prevent a major PR
faux-paux from happening.
Now for the questions:
Do you care about the people who ride the bus, no matter where they
live or work or shop?
Do you care about the handicapped, no matter where they live, work, or
want to go to?
Do you care that there are handicapped and elderly who want to be able
to go where they want to go and not have to call a phone number to
arrange a time to be picked up, go there, and wait for another ride to
come in and take them home again?
Do you care that these people want to be independent and resent having
to do more than they feel is necessary just to be independent?
Do you care that some people are now going to be much further away from
a bus or have fewer buses go by than before?
Do you care that we pay taxes, and that to implement this plan would
essentially be 'Taxation without representation' in the form of not
providing bus service?
Are you a friend of the bus rider, or in cahoots with the government
and business?
Are you a business-district oriented bus service, or a neighborhood-to-
neighborhood bus service?
Are you a business-to-business bus service, or are you a residence to
business bus service?
These questions, and more need to be answered, as it is important that
we know what you are really thinking here. You claim that you lost
ridership, when other factors are really at work here. You need to
provide essentially the same level of service as you do now and add
more service to presently unserved parts of Utah County, not take away
from it.
We are readying to file a Freedom of Information Act notice to obtain
the minutes of any meetings involving UTA on this matter, that being
2000 Utah County plan.
