I've been trying to track down just what Quebec communities have local public
transit service, but even a few hours with the Quebec telephone directories
wasn't very helpful.

Can anyone help me fill in some of the blanks?

Here's a list of Quebec urban areas (1991 Census Metropolitan Areas (cma's) and
Census Agglomerations (ca's)) with their populations. In most cases I don't
know if there is local transit service, or who the agency is that operates
(or manages) it.

(If anyone can translate my inquiry into French and post it on a Quebec
newsgroup, please let me know...)

In addition to these three main transit companies, there are a large
number of CITs (Corporations intermunicipales de transport) which serve
the outer suburbs. More on these below.

>Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (ca: 68378) ?
>Saint-Jerome (ca: 51986) ?
>Saint-Hyacinthe (ca: 50193) ?
>Salaberry-de-Valleyfield (ca: 40061) ?
>Joliette (ca: 37525) ?

I think all of the above have CITs connecting them with Montreal. St-
Hyacinthe is served by CIT Vallée du Richelieu. It goes to the Longueuil
metro, and also to the STRSM terminal in downtown Montreal at rush hours.

St-Jean is served by CIT le Richelain. It goes to the STRSM terminal,
and probably to Longueuil, too.

I guess Valleyfield is served either by CIT Sud-Ouest, or CIT Haut-
St-Laurent. Both head in that general direction from Montreal, CITSO
serving Châteauguay and CITHSL Huntingdon.

Other south-shore CITs include CIT Sorel-Varennes, CIT Chambly-Richelieu-
Carignan, CIT Rouville (to Marieville), CIT Roussillon (to St-Constant).

I believe St-Bruno and Ste-Julie, two south shore municipalities, have
their own municipal bus services which connect to Longueuil.

I think it's CIT le Portage which goes to Joliette from Montreal. Its buses
go to the Radisson metro, and to the Voyageur bus terminal on Berri St.
There's also a CIT Joliette-métropolitain.

Also going to the northeast from Montreal are CIT Montcalm, to Rawdon, and
the Repentigny municipal bus service.

To the north of Montreal, there's CIT Deux-Montagnes, CIT Basses-Laurentides
(to Blainville), CIT des Moulins (to Terrebonne), and CIT Lafontaine - St-
Antoine - St-Jérôme.

> Quebec (cma: 645550) CTCUQ

There's a separate transit agency for the south shore (Levis, etc.), Réseau
Trans-sud.

A few small municipalities around Quebec have their own municipal bus
connecting to the main Quebec or Levis systems.

You should be able to get soc.culture.quebec anywhere in the world, and
its charter explicity allows the use of English. I avoid it, since too
many of the articles are repititious political bickering, but you could
give it a try.

All I can remember from my quick visit in the summer is that they have
niftily-painted purple and white Classics, that the agency also serves
Grand-Mere, and that the name of the agency is a series of five or six
letters which don't immediately correlate to either of the town names.
I didn't take a picture of a bus nor a bus stop.

I just corrected the Quebec part. RTS is now Le Réseau Trans-Sud and
they operate a fleet of Classics out of the south shore community
(Lévis, St-Romuald,and St-Nicholas) and have a commercial agreement with
STCUQ which defines their work and boudaries. Rumour has it they will
soon merge. I dont think the other cities you have listed have any
transit services as they are all fairly small cities in sparsely settled
areas.

Was it RITCM? The "TCM" stands for "... de Transport du Centre de la
Mauricie." Shawinigan is on the St-Maurice River, and this part of
Quebec, from La Tuque to Trois-Rivières, is known as la Mauricie.

I'm not sure about the "RI" in the name. I'd guess "Régie
intermunicipale ..." or "Réseau intermunicipal ...", but I don't
really know.

Sounds plausible. It's non-memorable enough to explain my lack of
memory.

Technically, yes. But OC Transpo doesn't really provide any service in Hull,
only cross-border service from Ottawa to Hull. Somebody could make a
short trip in downtown Hull entirely by OC Transpo, but it's rare.

One of the CITs (don't know which one offhand ...)

Thanks for all the responses. This is helping a lot.

Here's what I've been able to collect so far.

The jury is still out as to when CIT is "Corporation Intermunicipale" or
