Just like APEC really, and most of the other very large one-off events that
have happened since the y2k Olympics.
Lots of disturbance for a short time, with the government hoping to reap a
huge tax reward from the money flows that the event has generated. Otherwise
the government wouldn't have cared (as much).

So do you want Sydney to be a vibrate, popular and outward looking city
or do you want to 'pull the draw bridges up' look inward and be insular ?
The NSW government spent far too much time basking in the glow of the
Olympics that they have let the state run down. A lot. Now when they try
to organise a big event to get Sydney noticed, lots of time is devoted to
insular Sydney-siders bitching about their lives being disrupted and not
'show case Sydney'.
One of the reasons Olympic transport worked was that the Olympic co-
ordination authority had a transport unit that COULD integrate all
transport modes. After the Olympics they disbanded it, all the planners
and modelers went home and NSW planning when back to ivory towers of
vested interests all fighting one another.
Some times I think the NSW public got the government they deserved
though...

Tourism is a very fickle income stream. I would prefer my money spent on
other long term needs.

Yawm every flash in the pan organisation that relies on using only
the best of everything looks great, even pollies. It is
when they have to look at long term work, like regular, routine
maintenance that you see how crap they really are.
For every great party, there is always a hell of a lot of setting
up and cleaning up by other people.
