I am wondering if there is any legal means for obtaining NYCTA type conductor's
(skeleton) keys.
I have started a collection of keys and want more!
I have a Metroliner key (which works on Metro-North and LIRR MUs and Septa
Silverliner IVs) and an Amfleet II key (which works on Comet/Shoreliner coaches
and NJT Arrows).

All of the skeleton keys I have/seen appear to be made by a manufacturer which
has the initials "J.L.H CO."
This manufacturer also seems to make most of the skeleton keys for transit
applications. What do the initials stand for?

I know but won't say. Why? Because your annoying. Everything you write on
this group is -----. What was your last great article I noticed? The
condition of restrooms on commuter trains. Popular topic in this
newsgroup!
You want to know about the keys.......get a job on a railroad and learn
that there only keys - just like car, house or the like. Thats right,
just pieces of metal that you shouldn't have in the first place. Coach
keys are hard to come by for the people who actually use them in their
duties. Why? Because people like you find them, take them home for
little souveniers and then try them in any little keyhole you shouldn't
be in.

1) Find a conductor
2) Be come VERY friendly with him
3) Swip desired key off him - copy it
4) Return it without him knowing
5) Repeat - collect 'em all :)

Just a crazy idea ;)

Very Crazy.

Did you know that any non-transit or other unauthorized person caught with
such keys in their possession can be charged by the police with possession
of burglery tools?

It has happened in the past.

>What, people are going to steal a subway train?

>Now I wonder how you would hide it?

Well, sometimes in the 40's, a Canadian National minor official was
arrested for "stealing" a train. What happenned is that while
intoxicated, and the town having ran out of booze, he took off with a
steam engine to the next town, where he was promptly arrested.

He was then charged for stealing the engine, and he was acquited when he
pleaded that he could not "steal" the engine, since it never left CN
property...

OTOH, in New-York, a whole train was successfully hidden from one of
those soulless bean-counters whose lowlifeness does not allow them to
see above the bottom line. This individual relentlessly went on to
search for all material that could be sold for scrap, and for years, he
has been hunting for that whole train, which was hidden with the
complicity of many employees... It is said that the guy either walked or
ran through EVERY tunnel of the whole system to look for it...

Then, the train was saved when the board of directors approved some
project to save some history rolling stock for a museum.

On a more personnal note, a friend of mine who has several private
passenger cars once saw an old baggage in a major railroad yard; he
wanted to buy it to use as a storage place. He then asked his contact at
the railroad to bid for it, and the contact came back saying "we don't
know where that car is; it's been lost since 1972"...

It's a movie about just that. Terrorists take over the lead car of a New York
City subway train, uncouple it and move it into a tunnel between stations, shut
the power off and hold the passengers for ransom. Not a bad movie, but not
great. Features Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Walter Matthau and Jerry Stiller.

The term 'Pelham 1-2-3' refers to a train that left the Pelham Parkway terminal
in the Bronx at 1:23 PM (which makes it an IRT Lexington Ave line #6 headed for
Brooklyn Bridge terminal station). 1:23 PM (vs AM) because it takes place
during daylight hours).

A subway car is hijacked and the passengers held hostage for ransom.
The criminals would seem to be trapped since the car can't leave the
system and its position is monitored, yet obviously they are intelligent
and have planned well, so they must have a way to get away with the money...
and that's as much as you should be told.

And when I asked if Jason's line was a paraphrase of a line from the
move, I was referring to a scene early in the film where a plumber
arrives to fix a toilet at one of the control towers. One transit
employee was taking the plumber in through an area that was not locked
and the plumber asked why it wasn't locked. The transit employee
replied, "Who's going to steal a subway train?" This was just minutes
before the hijackers took Pelham 1-2-3.

It happened in NYC a couple years ago. The person who stole the train
impersonated a motorman and signed-up for overtime. He operated the
train, apparently safely, until he ran a red signal. That's how he
got caught.

Someone stole a SEPTA PCC?/LRV? a few years back. He ran a regular
route, collecting fares and carrying passengers, until he hit an
automobile.

With out spoiling it for anyone:
A group of armed men hijack a downtown Lexington Ave. local and hold it for
a ransom of one million dollars.

Thumbs up.
Good thriller, fast paced, and kind neat to see the subway of the '70s.
Added humor for subway buffs with lines like, "Every car on the IRT is
seventy-two feet long. . ."

It's my understanding that the same situation occured quite frequently
in San Francisco. Apparently someone wanted to be a S.F. Muni driver
and couldn't get hired, so he decided to do the job anyway. He would
go to the bus depot, get transfers, take the bus, and do regular runs
every day. I don't know if/how he got caught!

S. F. Muni also had a bus stolen by a teenage kid, and it made it
almost all the way to Reno, Nevada. The Highway Patrol said they
didn't pay any attention to it because the kid was driving it in what
appeared to be a safe manner! I think it finally ran out of fuel.

If you could see how S. F. Muni used to park their buses, especially
around the yard near Fisherman's Wharf (I believe it is Kirkland yard),
you'd see how easy it was to get one of their buses. The buses, at
night, would be parked out on the streets around the yard (because the
yard was not big enough) and the doors were wide open. I've seen
similar situations around a couple of NYCTA's bus depots in the Bronx
too.

It was a Neoplan bus out of Frankford. My memory of the event is hazy, but
I think the same offender managed to do it twice in a month or so. Anyone
less hazy?

It happenned sometimes like 14-15 years ago in Montréal. It seems that a
passenger was not happy with the way the bus driver was hard with the
brakes, so he forcibly threw the driver out of the bus and took over
until they got to the subway. It must have been a really bad driver,
because even though the bus was full of people, the CTCUM (then) could
not find a single witness to nail the guy...
