One thing that bothers me is transit agencies that prohibit
passengers from carrying concealed firearms on the bus or train *even if
they have the proper permits, etc.*
I'm not a "gun nut" (can't own one legally anyway because I have a
mental commitment on my record), but I think this is just one more
thing to drive potential users away.
Let's say someone has a legal permit to carry a concealed weapon
for self-defense. The holder can, of course take their gun on transit
anyway and risk getting caught (and their permit revoked as a result),
or not take it, risking the lack of protection when they may need it
most (being on transit is riskier than driving when it comes to the
chance of meeting trouble), or forget transit altogether and drive.
Which is most likely?
It would be better if transit agencies kept silent on the issue of
firearms on board, or simply prohibited the public display of weapons.
This would protect the legal gun-carrier, and people who bring guns
aboard illegally and cause trouble with them can still be prosecuted for
breaking the law anyway (and if they'd just keep 'em hidden and not
cause any trouble they get away with it, but that's true even with a
transit sysytem policy).
