To an actual lumper service that Wal-Mart uses ? Or is Wal-Mart just
sticking the money in their pockets and paying Wal-Mart employees
hourly fee's to unload trucks all day ?
The reason I ask is that when I first started OTR back in the early
1990's ... when you delivered to Wal-Mart ... many times it was a
mandatory " driver assist " in the unloading process. A Wal-Mart
employee was there with you unloading the truck. There was no lumper
service available.
Then in the past decade or so ... trucking companies started having to
pay " lumper " fees if it is a driver unload ( when a driver doesn't
want to do it him/her self ).
Is there a scam going on ... or is Wal-Mart legit when they say it's a
" lumper " fee ?
Meaning ... are they actually using an " outside " lumper service ?
Anyone know for sure ?
Just curious.

I never did a live-load or live-unload at a Walmart (or Sam's Club) DC.
Always a drop-and-hook (or drop-and-search-fruitlessly--they always
use "our" empties for dead storage, it seemed like--some worse than others)

It seems to be the option of the DC. At Menominee Wi they don't charge
a dime. The employees may get a cut, but you know damn good and well
wal-mart gets the first half for sure..
At least they changed their tune. Changed the way they did business
and it works out for the better.
I always dreaded going to a walmart dc back in 91. An 0700 appointment
time meant you had to wait in a line of 700 trucks and they only had
50 docks open. Then, you had to be on the dock and unload the truck.
After a few years I started telling my employer and dispatcher, I
don't touch freight.
But if you think that's bad, Copp's foods in Stevens point wisconsin
is a trip. If the load has to be broken down, either you do the work,
or pay them to do it. They take nothing but cash. Your appointment
time is 1000. You're lucky if they still have a lumper around willing
to do the work.
I once sat in a place in florida all day. Even though we had an
appointment, we weren't allowed in unless we either hired a lumper, or
all the lumpers were hired.
Today as I was handing my $50.00 Comcheck over to the Wal-Mart clerk
for their " unloading " fee ... I was messing with the dude behind the
counter. I asked him where the money goes to ... and he threw his
hands up ... and said ... " you give us money, we unload the trucks,
that's all I can tell you driver ".
And the way he answered my question as if it were a sensitive
subject ... leads me to believe that something is not right with
what's going on with Wal-Mart DC's and their supposed unloading fees.
Chris
What could be wrong with it?
The business practices of shippers/receivers/your carrier isn't a
driver's business, and I can't see what difference it makes where the
money goes if it doesn't come from your pocket.
I think you may be short of shit to worry about... or avoiding the
shit you should be worrying about.

Yeah. What he said.
BTW do they have a Wal-Mart truckstop in DC?
Rocky
- gpsman
gpsman- weren't you just commenting about the lack of OT posts?
CC- you pay the lumpers cash, seperate from Wal-mart, so Wally doesn't
have to pay employee benefits.
Since it's greatly to their advantage, Wal-mart assists its
"sub-contractors" in any way it can.

Exactly. I've never paid a dime out of my pocket.
The shipper knows in advance the receiver will do this.
My main gripe is, why don't the two get together and pay the fees and
quit hassling the drivers over it.
Truck shows up to get unloaded. The receiver pays the lumper directly.
Everybody's happy.
THAT POST WAS FORGED!
Eh, maybe you're right, but I'd have to classify this topic under
"driver distractions".
Been guilty of it many times myself- thinking/worrying about shit that
was not of my concern.
gpsman regrets his tone.

That has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard said in
this NG.
Sounds like an Obama cool-aid drinking moron running around saying " I
don't care who has to pay for it ... but we want Universal Health Care
".
I had a three stop load coming out of Texas going to Wal-Mart DC's in
three different states. EACH DC charged $50 bucks to unload the
freight.
That's $150 dollars extra that will be passed on to the shipper.
Which will eventually be passed on to the consumer you moron.
Yeah you are right about one thing ... it's no skin off of my back
because the Broker was willing to pay the unloading fee at each stop.
But if I smell a rat ... I'm going to point it out.
Is that okay with you asshole ?
Chris
Doug ... I'm well aware of WHY a company uses lumpers ... It's just
that at Wally World it's all this secret " behind the scenes " stuff
going on.
Much different than at any other place that uses lumpers.
That's why I wonder if they are actually even using lumpers ... or
like I said before ... pocketing the cash and just paying employees an
average hourly wage to unload the trucks.
Chris
What the F*&$ is that supposed to mean ?

Translation : it's not a Rocky/Richard flame war ... so it's a "
driver distraction ".

Because you don't have the brains to ever question " why " ?

Never was going to lose a bit of sleep over your nonsense ... so take
your regret and shove it.
Chris
Uh huh...

Really...?
I thought you might not be an idiot, but instead my first assessment
was correct... as usual.

Loading/unloading fees are typically included in the "shipping"
quote. A to B= $x.
I've shipped a lot of shit. And a lot of big, heavy shit. All fees/
conditions are always specified in the contract.
> Which will eventually be passed on to the consumer you moron.
Then why didn't you lump it for them, for free?

That's the first time THAT ever happened.
Have you ever had a broker, with his freight sitting at the door, go,
"HO-OO-OLD ON THAR, BABA LOOEY... I DON"T HAVE FIFTY MOTHERFUCKING
DOLLARS. BRING IT ON BACK"!
Guess why.

Sure. I take my interweb entertainment where I can find it.

Boy is that a heap of bull. If that were true why didn't you say something
about realitytrasher years ago?
You Trolls are all alike.
Hey ... don't snip your own bullshit ...

" the business practices of shippers/receivers/your carrier isn't a
driver's bussiness "
Unfreaking believable.
So we are just " steering wheel holders " ... turn a blind eye to
everything ... ours is not to question.

Can't stand the truth huh ?

The broker specifically said on this shipment to hire the freaking
lumper asshole.
All I did was question was who's damn hands the money ends up in.
Then YOU had a freaking cow over it.
> > Which will eventually be passed on to the consumer you moron.

Why should I when the broker told me before hand to hire the damn
" lumper " service at Wally World in the first place ?
Once again all I was ever asking in the first place was where in the
hell
does the money end up ?
> > Yeah you are right about one thing ... it's no skin off of my back

What the fuck is that supposed to mean ? My company brokers freight
all the freaking time.
Brokers pay for lumper services ALL THE FREAKING TIME.
> Have you ever had a broker, with his freight sitting at the door, go,
> "HO-OO-OLD ON THAR, BABA LOOEY... I DON"T HAVE FIFTY MOTHERFUCKING
> DOLLARS. BRING IT ON BACK"!
I've been told that the company I was working for ... and/or ... the
broker wasn't going to cover
the entire cost of the lumper fee because the lumper was asking an
outrageous price.
So I either paid out of MY pocket ... or lumped the shit myself.

Have a freaking cow over the matter ... and you don't even understand
the subject matter.
Chris
and you don't even understand that you were Trolled by gpsman.

Really ?
I work for a small company ... we also have an " in house " broker
working in our building. ( not sure why ).
But anyway ... I talked with my boss, my dispatcher ... AND the
broker.
Lumper fee's are never included in a shipping quote.
Those fee's are tacked on once the lumper receipt is recieved back in
the office.
Tim ... the broker ... agreed with me that what's going on at Wal-Mart
DC's is complete BS when it comes to " unloading fees ".
