Seven killed in multi-vehicle crash
I-90 lanes closed for hours

By ABC7Chicago.com
October 1, 2003 — Seven people were killed and at least 16 injured when
two semi tractor-trailer trucks, a pickup truck, and a small commuter
bus collided on I-90 near Marengo. All the lanes in the area were closed
during the rescue efforts.

Most-- if not all-- of the fatalities were on the bus. They were from
the International Women's Associates, Inc., which is based in Chicago.
Twenty-two people were on the bus for a meeting in Joliet.

Six people were critically injured, according to officials. Eight others
suffered major injuries while two had minor injuries.

As many as a dozen ambulances were called to the scene, as were three
helicopters, according to witnesses.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes around 3 p.m. It is not clear
what caused the accident although it appears the trucks were approaching
a toll plaza. One truck struck another truck, and the impact sent a
vehicle into the commuter bus.

Police were detouring traffic westbound at Route 20 and eastbound at
Genoa Road. People driving eastbound who reach Marengo Plaza are being
turned around.

Marengo is about 50 miles west of Chicago.

A sad day for all involved for sure. Even sadder for the truckers who pride
themselves on safety.
According to the video provided, couldn't quite make out who the culprit
was.
It appears though that the trucker failed to slow down, as so many macho
speed demons in chicago fail to do at booths, and upon reaching the point at
that location where you can see the booths, got a rude awakening.
Strange that traffic should be backed up at that location. Usually, most of
the traffic dwindles down quite a bit once you leave the elgin toolbooth.

I've seen way to many local truckers, specially dump rock haulers, who find
it a nuisance to have to slow down for the toll booths.
It's a wonder there aren't more crashes like this.

See Saturday Rockford IL Register Star

The bodies aren't even cold and the damn ambulance chasers and money grubbers
are at it already. It never fails that the trucker is at fault though. Can't
believe I still love this profession.

The Trainer, I had this week, at the place I'm looking at for emplyment,
told me quite a bit more about it. Not to mention, it was still news on 780
AM out of Chicago.

It happened almost right on mile marker 41, well before the toll booths. I
drove by there about 6 times this week, all in an 18 wheeler and they even
had crosses up.

There was a story about a person that saw it and it was so sickening, he
couldn't even tell the whole story.

Thursday afternoon, when I drove by, they had two slow moving squad cars,
one in each lane making sure the people slowed down.

thanx.
