This is referring to an elevated section of I-84 (and US Route 6)
between exits 46 (Sisson Avenue) and 48 A/B (Asylum Street/Capitol
Avenue) in Hartford. Some people want it torn down altogether.
Cue the anti-freeway wingnuts, methinks.
Honestly, just looking at the satellite view, I don't see what's so
objectionable about that viaduct. It's not a double-decker, and it's
not blocking off a waterfront--the two big reasons I see people whine
about needing to tear a viaduct down.
Perhaps they'd prefer a surface replacement that's harder to cross?

The argument that I've heard is that the viaduct separates
neighborhoods from downtown Hartford. It may not be the nicest
looking viaduct, but I can't think of any reasonable alternative for
traffic if it is torn down. Yes, there is the alternative of taking
current CT 72, CT 9, I-91 and CT 15 if the whining John Norquist and
the rest of the anti-freeway crowd has their way, but one must
consider the additional cost of upgrading those roads as a new I-84.
