MD US-40 Susquehanna River Bridge Preservation Project

Work involves complete replacement of the bridge deck, substructure
(concrete piers) repairs and installation of a new permanent concrete
jersey barrier in the center of the bridge. Throughout the project, one
lane will remain open in each direction, except during scheduled
deliveries of construction materials. Permanent lane closures will
begin on or about June 9 and continue for approximately three years.
The $56 million contract was awarded to Joseph B. Fay Company of
Baltimore.
The Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge is the oldest of the Maryland
Transportation Authority's toll facilities, and this four-lane bridge
opened in August 1940. The structure is approximately 1.5-miles long,
crossing the Susquehanna River on US-40 between Havre de Grace and
Perryville in northeast Maryland.
