At least when I was a kid, you could walk around the foundations of
the Town of Dana, which was on the eastern side, if memory serves.
The bank safe was still in the bank's foundation when I visited it.
All of Dana is still above water. The cellar holes and roads and town
common are still there.
A few years ago a buddy and I road our motorycles to the gate that
leads into Quabbin near Dana. I wanted to look for a particular
foundation. We didn't expect to see any other people there, but as it
turned out, that was the day that the original residents of Dana made
their annual trip back to the town. There were a lot of old people,
lemme tell ya. We spent a few hours talking and listening. They had
big photographs set up at different foundations showing what the
buildings looked like. It was amazing and totally unexpected.
We never got a chance to check out that one particular foundation.
