Day 1- Middle of Nowhere (actually somewhere between Ashley, Marengo, and
Kilbourne) , Ohio to Devon, Pa.
Local roads to US 36 E to I-71 S to I-270 CW to I-70 E to Pa Turnpike (I-76)
E to US 202 S to Devon State Rd S to US 30 W to nursing home than E to
hotel.
Comments - ODOT can't decide whether I-270 W goes to Indy or Dayton. I-71
BGSs have both cities listed on separate signs. On the reconstructed I-70
in east Columbus, the BGS are using reflective tape, instead of button copy,
and the lights illuminating the signs are at the top facing down instead of
beneath the sign facing up.
Took I-70 through Wheeling instead of I-470 because I didn't want to deal
with I-470's hills while it was snowing.
On WB I-70 the BGS for Dallas Pike have all fallen apart. Don't know if
that was due to the weather, DOT, or other.
Plenty of EZ-Pass billboard ads east of Harrisburg, but none west.
While I despise Sound Walls, I find it cute that on the US 202 overpass over
Devon State Rd/Pa 252 the sound wall has a truss bridge motif/design.
No comment on the US 202 reconstruction. I drove by at 7:30 at night so I
couldn't see much other than plenty of walls. :-(
Day 2 - Devon/Stratford Pa to Ocean City, Md
US 30 E to I-476 S to I-95 S to Del 1 to US 13 (near St. Georges) S to US
113 S to US 50 E to Ocean City then back to US 113 N to Truck US 9 N to US 9
W to Lewes then back to Del 1 N to US 113 N to US 13 N to Del 1 (just before
the Canal bridges) to I-95 N to I-495 N back to I-95N to I-476 N to US 30 W
to Ivan Ave SW to Connestoga Rd NW to US 30.
Comments - Missed opportunity to get picture of exaggerated Lancaster Pike
Milemarker in front of Bank (?) at US 30-Wayne Ave. Car metering
accessories are up on the onramps to I-476 but still covered up.
Either I-495's northern is closer to the state border than I thought, or
Delaware and Penn need to get that straightened out on I-95.
Will Del 1 be tolled the entire route (at least the interstate compatible
section(s), if they choose to do nothing south of Milford)? Shouldn't it be
US 13 to Dover (when completed) as well?
US 113 should have a speed limit of 60 in Delaware.
Was Maryland 90 supposed to be a rerouting of US 50?
Got a picture of the Sacramento mileage sign in Ocean City. Didn't know
there was a drawbridge right before US 50 ends.
I forgot to bring my Atlas with me, so I feel fortunate to remember a basic
routing to Ocean City and back. If I knew better, I would gone north along
the shore to the US 9 ferry.
The only way you know you're in Maryland (instead of Delaware) is that US
113 goes from 4 lanes divided to 2 lanes.
Maryland has a website for the US 113 widening between the state line and
Maryland 90
What is the Truck US 9 routing around Georgetown for?
As for the US 9 ferry at Lewes. It's there.
Interesting bridge for Del 1 over the Delaware-Chesapeake Canal
One could get a good panoramic picture of Wilmington from I-495 as the sun
rises in the morning.
PennDOTs solution for the US 322-I-95 mess in Chester. Yellow Diamonds that
have offcentered crossroads with caution lane switching (or something like
that) beneath that.
Barnes & Nobles bookstores suck!
Day 3 - Devon, Pa back to Middle of Nowhere, Oh
US 30 W to Devon State Rd N to US 202 S to US 30 W to PA 283 W (or is it N)
to I-283 N to I-83 N to I-81 S to US 11 S to I-76 W to US 30 W (Breezewood)
to US 220 N to I-70/76 W to US 119 N to US 30 W to I-76 W to I-680 N to I-80
W to I-76 W to I-71 S to Oh 61 S to Morrow County Rd 15 W to home.
We now have a Truck US 30 around Devon. There are shields to direct traffic
onto Connestoga Rd from Devon State, but I saw no other Truck US 30 signs
around.
Comments - Nothing to report on US 202 construction. lot of concrete
barriers.
I-283 is 2.7 miles long
On one BGS for I-81 (along I-83) a I-78 shield is shown as well
On the I-81 BGS for Front St, you can still see the outline for US 322 in
text used to be.
Middlesex is just like Breezewood.
Was in a two mile backup on the PA turnpike, near the PA 75 exit for no
concernable reason.
Missed an opportunity to get a picture of the US 30 bridge over the Juanita
River west of Bedford.
Didn't see any construction from the turnpike at US 19/I-79
Why didn't ODOT just make I-680 a Super 2 between Oh 164 and the turnpike?
Didn't take as many pictures as I wanted because I forgot to take my point
and shoot (had a standard, which I wasn't about to operate while driving).
Added 4 counties to my collection (and took care of Delaware in 4 hours)
added I-495 and I-680 to the completed freeway list
Completed the Lincoln Highway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

You did all that traveling in PA and did not stop at the two former homes of

Gee I wonder why? :-) I won't say anymore, because I know I will hear about it

So you experienced some of the "Jeff Kitsko Internship Drive" on 30 and 76 :-).
And only 10 miles from me, and didn't stop to say hi.

OK, I hope you didn't ride in the fast lane all the way across the state :-).

He avoids Dave Gribble...and he also avoids you! what shame!!!

It's my understanding that the southbound seperation is in Pennsylvania.
I don't know exactly where the line is northbound, but it's probably
close to where the left lane ends.

The intermittent segment (that's being worked on now) won't have any
extra tolls on it. There won't be any tolls south of Dover AFB. I
think the rationale for not posting any of DE 1 as a rerouted US 13 is
that eventually, it could become an interstate, making the present
alignment of 13 more logical, and there's no point in rerouting any of
US 13 in the meantime.
> US 113 should have a speed limit of 60 in Delaware.
Delaware is paranoid about speed limits - note that only 495 and 1 have
65, and they're even considering repealing that. Undivided roads can't
have a limit higher than 50.
> Was Maryland 90 supposed to be a rerouting of US 50?
It's relief for the beach traffic, so that those heading west from
"uptown" Ocean City don't have to all go downtown.
> What is the Truck US 9 routing around Georgetown for?
To keep trucks off residential streets in town, I guess.
> Day 3 - Devon, Pa back to Middle of Nowhere, Oh
Do the signs for Devon on US 202 still have the "n" covered up? They
did for a long time, I know that.
> On one BGS for I-81 (along I-83) a I-78 shield is shown as well
That's been there a while now.

Southbound (towards West Chester) is done. Looks as though Northbound
(towards King of Prussia) is next to be worked on. The US 202 bridge in Devon
is cool. You should see it from the cross streets. Neat design.

I thought this was US 22 before the freeway was built. Am I wrong about this?
-Mike
US 22/322 was signed on Front Street before the expressway was built.
Connestoga Rd. The catch is, I only saw the Truck US 30 signs on Devon
State. Nothing on Connestoga Rd at the intersection. Nothing at US 30 near
Stratford (on the east end). It's probally related to the US 202
construction, but all the railroad overpasses there (for SEPTA's R5) are low
clearance.

Are you Dave Dribble (see Adam's response) ? ;-) You didn't say anything
back in the summer after my drive-by of your residence back then.

Actually I did. (I had to drive <gasp..> 75 MPH so I could get to Devon by 8
PM and get my grandmom in her nursing home before they locked it up for the
night)
> Jeff Kitsko

No to both. I was lacking daylight and a map to do any Cheseapeke Bay
bridge sightings (both west and south).
I've never gone south to do the Baltimore to Frederick to Morgantown to
Washington Pa routing. I probally could (and go south from Columbus along
US 33 to Athens and pick up US 50) but have never thought of it. Maybe I'm
just more Pennsylvania-centric.
And they are definitly plugging away at that intermediate section

Maybe a certain Eastern Pennsylvanian meterology grad student should move to
Delaware then. :-o
Saw plenty of cops along US 13 & 113 as well.

The Truss bridge motiff on the north wall is nice.
The King of Prussia construction should be several horrors for residences
the next several years.

No, back in the day both US 22 & 322 took that path into Harrisburg.
> -Mike
I got three around Breezewood. One bad picture of where the old turnpike
goes off towards the mountains. One picture of the (old) turnpike bridge
over the original two lane main route (that parallel's I-70 S) from
Breezewood to Frederick.
And a picture of a Pennsylvania bike route sign.
Plenty of Ocean City, Md pictures (about 12 altogether)
Like I mentioned before, I forgot the automatic/point-and-shoot camera, so I
wasn't able to get everything that I wanted, since I was driving all the
time. :-(
It's Dave Gribble how dare you insult the name...
Sorry, Feurdian slip on my part.
My Parents and I have in the past gone south on I-71 to Columbus then go out
I-70 and the turnpike. It always looked like the most direct route out
there. In the past year I got, for free, Rand McNally Tripmaker, and when I
ask it to find the quickest route from Marengo to Philadelphia it directs me
north on I-71 to I-76. When I compare the two routes there is actually only
5 miles difference between the two.
As for the US 250 to US 36 suggestion. I'd do it if I had the time, but
time is a consideration for me on these trips with family and in the winter
with little sunlight to see anything I can't go too far off the beaten path.
But I'll keep your suggestion under consideration for future trips.
